Over 4000 Growing Marijuana Plants Found When CDFW Served Two Search Warrants Near Island Mountain Yesterday

On March 11 2021, wildlife officers with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) served two search warrants in the area of Island Mountain in Trinity County. Assistance was provided by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Marijuana Enforcement Team, Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, an officer from the California Highway Patrol, CDFW Environmental Scientists and employees from the State Water Board.

The search warrants were obtained to investigate illegal cannabis cultivation and possession of stolen property. During the search of the two properties, officers destroyed over 4,000 growing cannabis plants and documented dozens of Fish & Game Code violations including illegal drafting of water from streams, illegal discharge of sediment into streams and trash placed into or near streams. A thorough records check confirmed no steps had been taken to obtain necessary permits and a state license to cultivate commercial cannabis.

Officers located a stolen travel trailer on one of the two properties. The trailer appeared to have been used by suspects tending an illegal cultivation operation. There is a continuing investigation into the theft and possession of the travel trailer. Seven subjects were detained during the investigation. Six subjects were cited and released for illegal cultivation of cannabis. A criminal case will be forwarded to the Trinity County District Attorney’s Office for consideration. No further information is available.
