Rain and snow fell across northern California last night.

Heavy rains fell in some areas. For instance, Woodley Island in Eureka had 1.76 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service. They report that this was “Eureka’s highest daily rainfall total in over two years and cracks the top ten rainiest days of the past five years.”

Snow fell overnight in the mountains of Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity Counties impacting some roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, “Some lingering morning cloudiness should give way to clearing skies in the afternoon, allowing for some sunshine ahead of the next round of light rain tonight.”

Though the precipitation is mostly gone this morning, snow is still impacting some of our roadways.

I was there last week and it was magical. I am not exaggerating, this was real and certainly the exception and not the rule. I went through northbound around 6:00 am and waited 1 minute or less. Later that day around 3:00 pm, I was southbound and waited like 3 minutes. Super, super lucky but it really depends on what’s happening at the moment.

Go for it and expect the best but be prepared for the worst…bring a book, some snacks and use the bathroom before you get there.

I went through last week. I waited an hour going north and two hours coming back.

However, the road guy on the north side said that they open it every two hours beginning at 10 so you can time that. I went through at 10 on the way up and missed the noon by 10 minutes because I didn’t know about the schedule. Now I know…
