Bald Eagles Sing Songs While Building a Nest

Bald Eagle pair on tree upstream from the nest [Photos by Ann Constantino]

Photographer Ann Constantino posted these bald eagle photos on her Facebook page a few days ago.

Here’s a fun fact about bald eagles from livescience.com: “Bald eagles are thought to be monogamous. This means that once the birds find a mate, they will continue to only mate with each other for the rest of their lives. A bald eagle will find another mate only if it is widowed.”

One of the pair approaching the nest.

Both Eagles in the nest. the female is the larger one.

This looked like some kind of pair bonding….or else they were bickering. 😉

Both eagles singing

Cooperating on arranging nesting materials

A stick is delivered to the nest

A pause in the singing

After being in the nest together for awhile, the two sat in separate trees away from the nest

About to alight with the stick

Eagle love songs

Intimate moment in the nest

Sometimes you keep time with your foot.

True fact , bald eagles are problems in certain places in Alaska , so much so that they are known to attack school children while they walk to school.

other side of the fence

true fact: humans are such a problem in certain areas of Alaska, so much so that bald eagles feel compelled to defend their territory as humans encroached on their land.

People are the problem, not the eagles.

These photos are amazing. They were taken from so far away that a person can barely see the eagles with the bare eye. Yet, they look like you could reach out and touch them.

The location is remote, and the only access is hiking in. Ann shows true dedication to her craft.

On one hand, it’s like: This is some of the best shit I ever saw.

On the other hand, it’s: Have some respect for your superiors, you fucking Peeping Tom spy.

Leave them alone.

Make sure you don’t fuck with them.

These are the bosses of the sky.

I waited two years after first discovering this nest a decade ago this May to tell anyone about it other than the state park staff who take care of the land it is on. I am sure the eagles are keenly aware of their admirers, but I assure you they are not bothered by our benign presence a quarter mile away.

I learned somewhere along the way that they also will but evergreens inside the nest, sensing, it is believed, the antiseptic quality of it. An eagle cam I have watched that is located on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay showed white pine branches in the nest prior to the egg laying.

Just an amazing treat….Thank You and thank you for keeping your distance so as not to upset them. With their awesome vision I’m pretty sure they saw you too.
