Here, Kitty, Kitty

Bobcat in northern Mendocino [Video by Cathy’s Critter Cam]

Although a bobcat sighting adds a thrill to most people’s day, they aren’t rare or endangered in northern California. Until a few years ago hunters could trap them. And until last year, they could be shot. But on January 1, 2020, hunting of the small feline carnivores ended in this state.

Cathy in northern Mendocino sent the video of the two bobcats caught on her Critter Cam recently. And, we’re wondering if any of you have been lucky enough to capture any photos.

Still one of our favorite photos is this one shared with us last summer by local wildlife photographer, Ann Constantino. Can you top hers?

We caught two Mountain Lion on our camera’s in Maple Creek. One was a bit emaciated, which was worrisome, and the other was fat and happy. I’ll upload pics later today when I get back home.

While I’m originally from Humboldt, I took this bobcat photo in Montana de Oro on the Central Coast.

He looked annoyed that I was on his trail, so he sat down for several minutes while I snapped photos. Finally, he moved off the trail, and I passed by, and then he got back on the trail and casually sauntered up the hill! It was a couple days before Christmas 2009, and I considered the encounter my early Christmas present.

This one crossed the road in front of me, on the McCloud arm of Lake Shasta.
