Grieving artI would like to extend my sincerest thanks to the Heart of the Redwoods  Hospice organization. A group of kinder, more knowledgeable people would be hard to find. Through the recent loss of my husband at home they guided me. I am so grateful for their caring and confidence.  Even in these hard times of Covid their contact and advise were timely and they were always easy to communicate with. I would like to personally and publically thank hospice nurses , Cheryl A and Melody for sharing wisdoms with me. I learned a great deal from them both.

I’d also like to thank my children ; Molly McMahon , for her incredible strength and presence of mind in an extremely stressful time. My deepest thanks also to my son Ben McMahon and wife Aleks for taking control of daily tasks that allowed me to focus on what I needed to do for Tom.  I am so proud of you .  Annette Downey I’d like to thank for her hands on guidance with practical nursing techniques. Lastly, I’d like to thank Andrei Mosac, an incredibly compassionate young man who made Tom’s last days as vibrant and comfortable as they could have been.

In sincere gratitude, Kathryn McMahon

Mr. Tom as I called him, was a lovely man. He loved my chocolate toffee triangles and I could count on him to search for them at the functions at Whitethorn Elementary School. That man was strong and amazed me as he rode a bicycle by my house. His wife Katie is also an incredibly strong woman. I am grateful that I had Tom in my life and continue to have Katie in my life. Katie you have so many people here who love you and are not only here for you but the adult children. Thank you Heart of the Redwoods Hospice. You are so much loved!

I had the honor of interviewing Tom in 2014 for a story about his amazing service in World War II, when as a very young man, tail gunner in a B17, he was shot down, captured by the Gestapo, and attempted escape 7 times, finally succeeding after incredible hardships, and joining Russian troops to continue fighting. It was a wonderful experience to meet him and talk with him for a couple of hours. A remarkable hero has left this world! My deepest sympathy to his family.

“A group of kinder, more knowledgeable people would be hard to find”. I second that emotion.

So sorry for your loss Katherine. We dealt with just the counseling part of this organization after losing two family members in three months. Those are just flat out good people. Grief can tear you to pieces and both my wife and I cannot say enough about how far these people went above and beyond to help us get through such tragic events. So kind and compassionate.

Katie… keeping Tom home to spend his final days in Shelter Cove never would have been possible without your courageous, dedicated loving care that you provided for him. You helped him remain as independent as possible throughout the long days and nights… making sure he had what he needed to remain with us during this crazy Covid time. Many thanks to all who were a part of Tom’s final journey, but you, Katie, his matey, were the true hero! Blessings.
