This is a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

On Feb. 5, 2020, at about 7:10 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 3300 block of Little Fairfield Street, in the county’s jurisdiction of Eureka, for the report of a dog attack in progress.

Deputies arrived on scene and located a 59-year-old female victim with serious injuries related to a dog attack. The victim was given emergency medical treatment by first responders on scene and then was transported to a local hospital in unknown condition. The dog, identified as a pit bull, had already been contained upon deputy arrival.

While conducting their investigation, deputies learned that the dog’s owner was outside with the dog when the victim reportedly walked by. For unknown reasons, the dog reportedly escaped its harness and attacked the victim.

Deputies took custody of the dog and it was transported to the Humboldt County Animal Shelter where it is being held pursuant to Humboldt County Code § 542-13 and § 547-14.

This case is still under investigation. Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 445-7251 or the Sheriff’s Office Crime Tip line at (707) 268-2539.

Proper dog ownership requires constant training from the birth of the dog, utilizing best practices to prepare the dog for interactions with any person or animal it may meet. On top of that, proper dog ownership requires the dog owner to take the utmost caution in preventing bad behavior from harming others. That means purchasing the necessary collars, leashes, harnesses, fencing, gates, etc., and making sure there are failsafes for those prevention tools. Some dog breeds require more work. Some people shouldn’t own certain breeds.

i disagree people should own the dogs that they know they can handle that is why before you get the dog you should do some research on the type of dog you want and lets say you really wanted this one dog but you learned that it had a lot needs (all dogs do) unlike lets say a poodle he does not need as much food as a mastiff (i am just trying to prove a point not saying mastiffs need more than poodles). All dogs need the same thing food, water, shelter, and love without that the dog is going to want to get out more to go get other attention like the negative instead of the positive.May the woman that was attacked today recover soon my prayers are with her and her family.I hope this incident does not effect your thoughts on pit bulls all of them are different in their own ways.

“For unknown reasons, the dog reportedly escaped its harness….” There better be a good explanation how that happened with the owner right there.

I think the translation here is that the pit bull wasn’t wearing a harness…I feel so sorry for the 59-year-old female victim that sustained serious injuries from the pit bull attack.

Am really wondering how our lack of mental health facilities are playing into these attacks. The man who owned the dogs responsible for the horrible attack in so hum sounds like he could use those services.

Also wondering what we can do to tell the sheriffs&DA we want local puppy mills and fighting rings taken seriously and prosecuted appropriately.
There are many breeding pitbulls and dutch shepherds, which i assume means theres inbreeding happening.
Dalmations are the best example, theyre so inbred theyre either super dumb or super aggressive.

Services can’t be imposed involuntarily unless a person is, by lanterman petris short act a danger to themselves or others. Laura’s Law made an amendement for involuntary outpatient treatment but the law is voluntary by county (Humboldt does not participate) and the criteria involves such strict standards and so much court action that it is not often used at all.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanterman–Petris–Short_Act
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura%27s_Law

The reality is that few people with mental illnesses want imposed treatment and have lots of legal ways to refuse it. There is a sentimental belief that if you provide mental health service, people will come. The reality is that mostly that means drugs with serious side effects and even those who are rational enough to wants services have few good options. As does anyone dealing with people with serious mental health issues.

And no, Dalmatians may have a hype activity component to their breed but they are certainly not all dumb nor crazy.

there is only one reason a dog owner would want a dog that was bred to be aggressive. the owner knows the dog is a weapon or they would not have it. gee… i wonder why san francisco outlawed them??
oh yeah……….. i just remembered now!!!!!!!!

I understand were you are coming from but just remember the dog is not the one to blame it is the owners fault. the dog was born the owner trained it i should know i have 5 pit bulls and a 2 year old and they have never once should aggression toward me or my child actually if anything they save my little boy from a kidnapper so i will never give up my dogs to some dumb law against these breeds. I swear it seems like we just don’t want to blame the humans like the meme goes
“in the 70’s they blamed the dobermans,in the 80’s they blamed the German shepherds,In the 90’s they blamed the rottweilers, now they blame pit bulls,When are we going to start blaming the humans

[edit] The same dogs were babysitters in the colonies.
Read a book . If your dog slips it’s collar, you fix it. Goes for any breed!

Seriously Kym? I reply to a person who called me a clown. As part of my reply, I refer to that person as a genius. You edit the word genius and leave the word clown. Is genius an insult? Is clown? Ridiculous.

Wrong. Pitbulls and their variations, were never nanny dogs. That was an ad campaign, used to reintroduce Pitbulls as great dogs, because they were actually designed to take down bulls and bears…. To the death. http://love-a-bull.org/resources/the-history-of-pit-bulls/#:~:text=Pit%20Bulls%20were%20originally%20bred,known%20as%20%E2%80%9Cbull%20baiting%E2%80%9D.&text=Once%20bull%20and%20bear%20baiting,their%20attention%20to%20%E2%80%9Cratting%E2%80%9D.

If pitbulls are such great nannies, why isn’t there a pack of them at every child care center?

That just shows how uninformed you are. That myth was debunked years ago. Even the pit Bull advocates admit that this was a myth

Nightmare for all concerned.

Except the dog. They are instinct driven, this was in character. And aggression especially towards humans is one thing that’s difficult, if not impossible to train out of a dog. They can never be trusted . It’s also highly likely this was not the first time that it displayed aggression towards people. So that and the fact it escaped a harness, is operator error.

I believe there’s too many good dogs around to ever risk keeping an aggressive dog. 🐕🔫

But people do.

Then they risk getting sued, when their dog does what its instincts dictate. And possibly face criminal charges! Nightmare.

These pitbulls just need a social worker to help them with their inherent behavior disorders.

As a very loving owner of a few dogs (mixed and pure) If my dog attacked with injury I would expect her to be put down. Once they start that behavior there isn’t much redemption in my view.

Pit bulls should be outlawed and shot on the spot

They are outlawed in some cities, but not in Humboldt. Shot on the spot works for me. If people would read a little about their history there would be far less pits as family “killer” pets.

I wonder if a law regarding pit bulls and their ilk could be used like California does gun laws. That you have to register, be certified, pay fees or the dog is confiscated.

Can you not say that please? I’ve had my pitbull for 6 years and she never hurt someone or another dog before. She took care of me when I was a child. Not all pitbulls are bad, some dogs that aren’t pitbulls put other dogs in the vet and you don’t put them down. Why is that? Just because they aren’t pitbulls or cuz you feel bad for them. Do you not realize other dogs attack their owners too and there not pitbulls. I would gladly take a bullet for my dog any day and I’m a teenager.

If the animal shelter is anything like county jail, that dog will be back out on the street in the morning.
