Drive-by Shooting Last Night

At approximately 10:19 p.m., a drive-by shooting occurred at a residence in the 1300 block of Sunset Avenue in Arcata, according to Arcata Police Chief Brian Ahearn.

“No one was struck by the gunfire as best we can tell,” he wrote us this morning in response to a question.

Ahearn said that a 22-year-old male visiting the house was the intended target of incident.

“While outside the house the male victim exchanged words with the driver of a white sedan…,” the Chief told us. “The driver [believed to be male] drove past the house, returned going [eastbound] and fired multiple rounds towards the victim” who fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

Multiple people called in the shots fired. However, Chief Ahearn said, “Several of the occupants of the house were unaware that the shooting occurred.”

The Chief told us, “There were several bullet holes in the exterior of the house…It appears the rounds were fired from a handgun.”

Arcata Police are still investigating the incident. If anyone has any further information about the situation, please contact them at (707) 822-2428.

I was the victim of a Drive By Shooting a few years ago, 20 miles out Hwy 36!!! Luckily i was in the Middle of the night all were asleep!!! All it did was give my NON Cannabis potted, plant a bigger drainage hole midway up both sides!!! Luckily my Insurance covered replacing the Double Paned Window that had a BIG hole through it!!! I won’t go into the Theatrics of trying to get it reported Accurately to the HCSO!!!

I knew I heard gunshots! And I also knew you would report it. Thank you! I listened for sirens after but didn’t hear any…
My boyfriend and dog were on a walk right there about 20 minutes before.. I’m thankful to hear that it sounds like no one was hurt!

What has happened to Humboldt?! We have shootings almost every night. Multiple car accidents almost daily. Kids use FU in their conversations repeatedly. Speeding. Hot Rods with Loud mufflers that shake neighborhoods with no regard. No manners. Little concern or kindness anymore. I hear it’s everywhere. It’s the breakdown of our society. It makes me sad. All I ask is, people, be kind. We can be smarter than this. Do unto others…ya know?

There used to be a law enforcement strategy called ” the broken window theory”. If you saw a broken window and did not fix it then the next property crime could be worse, the general acceptance level of what is acceptable would deteriorate and eventually after seeing broken windows and worse people would think even worse criminal behavior is the norm and acceptable. Well….what have we seen happening in Humboldt for the last couple decades?! I think there might be something after all with “the broken window” theory…Arcata- people crapping on sidewalks and stabbing each other while the rest get lost in “spirituality” and magic thinking

What the fu talking about?

So where was the shooting in arcata the night before this one? And the night before that?

When something makes the news, it’s just that, news. By definition it’s out of the ordinary….

They were talking about Humboldt, not just Arcata so I think it is getting to be pretty close to being true. Violent crime most nights.

Well when nearly 5 million purchased guns last year ( around 40% new owners) joined the already 100 million some gun owners in this country (NSSF statistic) you can easily see why the frequency of shootings continue to rise. And those numbers are only the guns we know about. Americans love guns more than they love human life so it’s just a small price to pay to read about the latest shooting every couple mornings or so. At least 105 million people be comforted in the illusion they’re not much safer. And here I am, still here waiting for more guns to make us safer.

You present zero data on whether ANY gun (legally) purchased last year has even been fired ONCE—at a range, or elsewhere.

That you “can easily see why the frequency of shootings continue to rise,” based on new (legal) gun purchases, speaks to unsound reasoning and dark imagination, rather than forensics.

There isn’t a demonstrated causal relationship between quantity of guns and quantity of shootings—legal, or illegal.

More drugs ,more money ,more violence. Take the guns, then they decapitate like Mexico. But right now easier for a felon to get a gun than it is for a law abiding citizen.

We can make sure all felons have guns then we will have an excuse to outlaw guns. Felons owning guns is no accident

Ok Im going to stop you right there! Those guns used in those crime are most likely stolen from law abiding, responsible gun owners. The POS that are shooting at our neighbors in this County are POS’s that have gotten those guns illegally and have no regard for the law. Blame our lustrous Governor for the crime happening on our streets and not law abiding, legally responsible gun owners!!

They were WAAAAAY too loose about 215, then they legalized weed is what happened. Made for a very desperate situation for a lot of people, making for very volatile situations. As much as I like the chaos, it’s actually pretty sad what has happened to Humboldt.

Tough times. Those mufflers are insane – should be illegal. Seattle was working on making them illegal when I searched the net last year. I don’t see them being mentioned in the news here though nor usually in comments.

Arcata is such a hole. Makes the backside of eureka seem pretty posh, frontside of eureka still pretty nasty though too. So glad I don’t have to live in either anymore, I feel sorry for those people that do. No longer a place someone would choose for themselves, but we do what we have to.

Arcata is looking a lot like what the worst parts of Berkeley used to look like. (they’re worse now). It’s sad. I mean- we had the opportunity to watch Berkeley deteriorate and learn the lessons from that…but we refused. Liberal social policy is okay (compassion is a good thing) but ya got to draw a line somewhere and hold people responsible for their behavior- not instruct your police department to look the other way! …Arcata- where they made “Liberal” and “hippie” into bad words!

I grew up respecting liberals and hippies. I still do. But not Arcata’s versions of them! Hard-working liberals and hippies respectful of their neighbors- Vermont’s versions are way much better. Not cowardly illiberals and trust-fund hippies!

Your name couldnt be less apt. Its called Young People ‘realist’. Its a college town.
But you are happy to HATE it and everyone in it, because you think its ‘liberal’.

And I’m guessing Ted Cruz or maybe Joel Olstein or Roger Stone are examples of your conservative values?

Your ‘good people’ who make society better huh?

Re, “So glad I don’t have to live in either anymore, I feel sorry for those people that do” …

Been here in Eureka for 50+ years. I’m not leaving, and I have the means to go elsewhere. I see lots to complain about, but my wife and I agree, we’re staying right here, and we’ll live our lives doing all we can to make Eureka a better place. No disrespect to you, J, but we don’t need you feeling sorry for us.

Drive by shooting are the epitome of cowardly. It’s like announcing “I want to use violence but I want to be as safe as I can be while I do it.” So get in a car, ready to run away then shoot. And the who cares if anyone else gets in the way.

This was at my boyfriends house. Bullets almost grazed his bed. Really ridiculously scary and unexpected. The dude who was shot at does not live there and was just a somebody hanging out. Regardless what a scary night. Really happy everyone is okay.

So then you guys brought the situation there! Sure glad I don’t have YOU as my neighbors. You deserve to be scared. Your choices of who to bring around have serious consequences… It was also in the Sunset area that Kay’s son got shot to death over a weed deal. Another series of bad decisions as to who to bring around into your home…There are evil people and if you won’t believe that then you are being stupid and very unsafe

Thankful no one was physically injured by this idiotic incident and hopefully the perp is caught sooner than later.
Having lived in parts of Humboldt and Trinity county for nearly 2 decades and moving back to my homestate in the South several years ago, I ltruly cannot believe all the violence happening there on a nearly daily basis. The random violence seems akin to the Bay area or Los Angeles and it breaks my heart to read about it. How does such a beautiful place surrounded by ginormous Redwoods and amazing beaches become infested with murder, robberies, and mayhem at levels that mirror big cities?

As for the comment on “do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” aka The Golden Rule, there is a huge problem with that line of thinking, unfortunately. I was raised by The Golden Rule, but have learned from time and horrid experiences with certain types of people not everyone has the same concept of how to treat their fellow human beings or even themselves.

I was also raised to understand my freedom ends where another person’s begins. Of course, that is a whole different can of worms; though more people living by that philosophy would make for a better and more peaceful society,in my humble opinion.

There are way too many people who are either so masochistic or sadistic the Golden Rule gets twisted into a nightmare for those with good hearts and intentions. Not everyone has humanity or compassion in their souls. What seemingly heartless folks want done to them or what they would do to others is something sane, good people would see as evil and would never want done to themselves.

How can Humboldt county and the rest of the Emerald Triangle stem this wave of violence and recoup the beauty and kindness the area was once full of? There must be a way to stop the influx of evil that has beset the region. Please don’t tell me it is the weed, hippies, or liberals fault as the blame game does nothing but further divide and vilify certain people. Any true “hippy” does not want gun violence anywhere.

Very thoughtful Georgia. I reckon drugs, mental illness, alcoholism, and general entitlement are at the base of these issues. While I’m mostly liberal on many issues, the major problem w it’s tenets seem to be the inability to hold individuals to account for actions committed. It’s become evident that we as a society have created all of these problems in search of fortune, comfort, or “happiness”. And as time goes by we’re willing to overlook certain behaviors or simply readjust the penalties to accommodate the number of offenders committing serious, violent offenses and the like. It is then that these mobile values, relearned generation after generation are diluted. Education is important and walking in another’s shoes are as well. I echo many of the previous similar comments on this story esp the degradation of common mores and norms of our society being blown apart by the minority(not minorities**)
