For nearly 24 hours, Hwy 101 has been closed in Mendocino County after a major winter storm blew through the area. At this time there is no estimated time of reopening.

Caltrans posted on Facebook at 12:37 p.m. that the major artery “remains fully closed in Mendocino County from Cummings to Reynolds Highway, north of Willits, due to stranded and stuck big rigs and cars, and fallen power lines and trees across the highway.”

They urged patience stating, “Crews are currently towing vehicles and removing trees. Utility companies are on their way to repair fallen power lines. We appreciate your patience as we work to reopen the highway.”Caltrans snowplow on 101

UPDATE: Hwy 101 Reopens!

With the length of this closure, how did today’s S.F. Chronicle get through? I received my copy at 9:30am and was very surprised to get it as it comes via truck from the Bay Area.

Could have been 299 or 36, with chains. Or some more adventuresome route.

I got through this morning over 20 to Fort Bragg up 1 to Legget. UPS is using the route to get ground shipments through.

Last time someone publicized a route like that, it was about five minutes before “road blocked by semi unable to make corner” was the next headline…

The long trailers are all sitting at peg house waiting. The trucks for UPS were using very short trailers, they are probably used to the drill.

Branscomb Rd should never be considered a hwy to the coast very badly maintained too narrow in a lot of places for 2 cars to pass

128 is closed west of 101. I suppose you could head to 1 further south and come inland at the 1 /101 intersection at the north end of Leggett but that would be a hairy route for a big vehicle. My guess us that the SF Chronicle is printed up at the Times Standard print shop and distributed locally. But that’s just a guess.

TS sold of the big printers last year, they were deconstructed and shipped away last year. TS is printed over in the valley somewhere and brought over in the early am.

Wrong. Hwy128 is open. And passable. Just check the caltrans map . Here’s a current screen shot.

Gosh, with all the badass folks around here… if that’s the extent of the road blockage, give my guy and a crew of locals a few hours with their chainsaws and that road would be all set! I’ll help stack wood.

Twice doesn’t make it more believable.

And from the content of your comment ( “head to 1 further south and come inland at the 1 /101 intersection at the north end of Leggett “) pretty sure you need to look at a map . All closures on 101 are SOUTH of 1 hwy/Leggett exit.
