Four CR Women’s Basketball Athletes Honored for Academic Excellence
Press release from College of the Redwoods:
Even though the College of the Redwoods Women’s Basketball team is not yet playing games for the 2020-21 season, they are still competing, and winning, on the state level. Four CR players have been named to the 2020-21 California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Academic All-State Team. Theresa Dickey, Abiona Katri, Breesia Northern and Juliana Ortega-Miranda have been named to the team, along with 116 players from 41 California Community Colleges, the group’s longest list of honorees ever.
“The Board of Trustees and I are very proud of these student athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics,” said President Keith Flamer.
To qualify for Academic All-State recognition these student-athletes had to compete for a year at their colleges, earn at least 24 units of credit and maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA. CR, along with Shasta, are the only two Golden Valley Conference schools in Women’s Basketball represented.
“We are extremely proud of this group of young women and how they represented our Women’s basketball program,” said CR Athletics Director Bob Brown. “They are all exceptional students, basketball players and even better people. The entire Women’s program with their accomplishments as a team with a GPA of 3.46, a GVC championship and playoff win and quality community citizenship helped create a very special atmosphere here in CR athletics and great memories for themselves and our entire community.”
Brown added that there is still a chance an abbreviated season of CR Women’s Basketball may begin here at the beginning of March.
