Red-Tailed Hawk Returns to Its Perch
Photographer Ann Constantino took this photo of an “Immature Red-tailed Hawk” near Cannibal Island Road recently. The bird had just caught, killed, and eaten some prey.
“After finishing its meal, the hawk came back to its perch,” Constantino said. A perfect spot to capture the handsome young avian.
According to naturemapping.org, “Red-tailed Hawks are well adapted for soaring and spend long periods riding thermals, searching for prey. It is frequently seen sitting on utility poles or snags where it watches for rodents in the grass along the roadside.”

A very nice shot of a beautiful young Red Tail Hawk.
Couldn’t the hawk have found some kinda soy alternative, I feel so sorry for what ever poor creature you Pascopaths are celebrating the death of. Wow this website has really fallen off.
I am sorry, but this a joke, right?
Some people have issues with other peoples lifestyles I guess, and often think they are being funny when no one else even gets it. Sad really.
Must be a joke. Who knows, anymore? Look at the last four years, just for starters. Troll farm intern? Chat bot incubator?
Yeah, that hawk really bites, man. Just running out the Akismet timer.
If you’re serious fret not. Less than 80% of birds of prey survive the first year because catching prey is very hard. I’m sure if they could go to a grocery store they might be happy to eat soy products now and then. I would put out there that if they didn’t catch rodents like they do we would be overrun with grain and crop destroying rodents. Nature knows best!
I agree, there are so many Alternative foods for Hawks it’s just so tragic. All rodents lives matter
Jerry?
We need a talking heads expert to pontificate on this. How about Mickey Mouse?
Juvenile Red Tails, as well as some other raptors, are often harassed by ravens. Appears to be one of the raven’s favorite games.
I saw a Red-tailed Hawk attempt to steal a salmon from an Osprey near Jenner on the Russian River.
Neither got a meal as the salmon fell back into the river. One of the coolest things I’ve witnessed.
One of their favorite places to glide in the air currents is just before you drop down into Cape Mendocino. I actually saw two (fighting or ??) get hooked together and drop to the ground. They seemed to be okay afterwards.
Hooking together and dropping to the ground = bird of prey courtship. Eagles do it, too, in the month of May.
It’s very beautiful to watch. Fools in love…
What you seen was they were mating that’s how they mate they lock together and swirl down to the ground
Am I the only one who wants to know where exactly “cannibal island” rd is?
Easy it’s right below Lolita…
Used to be kind of a rough neighborhood.
Take the Loleta exit south of Eureka off 101. As you come into the outskirts of town, look for the Cannibal Island Road sign and drive on down to the Island and estuary of the Eel River. A good local map will help.
Very nice shot of the young hawk. If the raptor’s today, somebody grab my binoculars.
Not many people know because so many get eaten when they go there
Near loleta…
So.e friends have had festivities there, music.
Its kind of deserted weird property
Yesterday when I was letting out the ducks, there were two massive hawks feasting on a much smaller hawk. Tossed the poor pile of feathers over the cliff.
There is a boat ramp on the lower Eel. Take Cannibal Island Rd out toward the ocean, and turn left on Cock Robin Island Rd. It’s not far to the river is public property. Or continue on to the mouth of the river. The area at the end of the road is Crab Park. The view back to Loleta and up the Eel River is worth the trip. Your dog will love it.
Respect that it is the end of the road. Lock your car, and buddy-up.
It is public property, and beautiful. Spiritual.
See everyday near clam Beach 101..just beauty..
Bob ross…happy birds
