[UPDATE 4:43 p.m.: As the Tide Leaves, the Pickup Emerges] Vehicle Submerged in Humboldt Bay; Several People in the Water

Water RescueThree to four people are in the water after a vehicle went into Humboldt Bay off the Waterfront about 1:55 p.m. The vehicle is 100% submerged, according to the Incident Commander speaking over the radio to dispatch.

The vehicle is about 30 to 40 yards offshore, the Incident Commander said over the radio. “It appears to have floated a bit before completely sinking,” he stated.

The Coast Guard and Humboldt Bay Fire are on scene with a rescue swimmer.

UPDATE 2:46 p.m.: The tow truck  won’t be able to get the Chevy Silverado. According to Jon Beck who is at the scene, “The driver went to the hospital.”

By now the truck has completely sank into the Bay.

UPDATE 4:43 p.m.: As the tide retreats, more of the pickup is now showing. Reader Christina Gallagher sent us this photo she said was taken at 4:20 p.m. and she circled the area she said was where the fuel from the truck had spread. “All is quiet,” she wrote. “A coast guard gentleman is there. A spill of fuel is around truck.”

Gallagher says, though it hasn’t been confirmed officially, that there was only one elderly man in the pickup. The others in the water were “bystanders/rescuers.” She added, “They dont know why he went in. Some people were trying to say stop but he just went over edge.”

Is this at the boat launch area?

The photos look to me like the sunken vehicle is in the drink just south of the Wharfinger Building. Probably floated there from the public marina ramp north of the Wharfinger.

I just pray the Coast Guard and Humboldt Bay Fire can get the occupants out before they drown. But being 30 to 40 yards offshore does not give them but a few seconds to reach the car and breach the windows and/or door(s) if possible to get the folks out. This does not give me much hope for survival unfortunately. One can only pray it will be a great ending, but it is in God’s hands now.

Martin, the article says the driver went to the hospital, so he or she got out of the truck. My question is, how the heck did the truck end up in the bay?

It says elderly gentleman as a description of the driver (only occupant), maybe he had a medical emergency, a stroke, heart attack? Hope we get more details and pray that the driver is going to be ok!

A woman swam out and rescued the old man before he was submerged completely and taken out of the bay and to the hospital.

Why did your God allow the truck to go swimming in the first place?

Oh, free will.

operator error for sure. Or a seizure? or “what the hell-let’s go swimming!” attitude. One less truck to be on the road this year. Leave it out long enough it might become a sanctuary reef for the fish.

There was a single occupant. Unknown why he ended up accelerating at a high rate of speed ending up in the bay! Airbag deployed, person went to help him get out after truck floated out a ways before sinking fully. Another person went to assist first rescuer.

High tide, 7.3, at 1:08pm. Low tide, -0.7, at 8:14pm. By 1:55pm, the tide would not have been moving too fast, yet. At 2:46pm, yes, would have been moving good. I can only figure they went in at the launch North of the Wharfinger docks. But, I can’t see how they would not have gotten hung up on the docks and / or boats. Obviously they had no trailer hitched by looking at the photo with the bed in the air, unless it unhitched right away. Super curious about how this happened before I start wise-crackin’, because, $#!T can happen.

OK, further speculation, based on Gallagher’s reporting, he went in from, or near, the Wharfinger parking lot. I hesitate to suggest, a heart attach or stroke?

Best wishes for the driver.

That said…don’t trust those darn GPS directions, especially in the winter time and/or out in the “hills”.

“Turn left now…”

Elderly is anything over 30 now. They trained me to do these rescues. Seems like the worst always happen when its freezing. At first I would point out the fuel, and they would say it has to be a tanker truck full before we will worry about it. Patients were always absolutely freezing. I’d wonder why the ambulance was just sitting there with its freezing patients , is it that important to talk about crap when patients are waiting ?

They will automatically charge him for polluting state waters… It happened to someone I know, who got stuck& tow truck didn’t get there in time before the tide came in.
Hope he’s okay.

Hey all,

I pulled the victim and 2 good samaritans out of the water in my 25′ safe boat. When I arrived on scene the 2 good samaritans ( one male and one female ) had the elderly driver out of the vehicle and all three were standing on the roof. The driver was conscious but unable to speak or say much. He did shake his head no when asked if there were any other passengers. The three of us moved the victim into the boat and transported to the public marina where EMTs assessed him and determined he may have had or was currently having a stroke.

Best regards,
Patty Mayo

Hi Patty,

I am the victims daughter. I want to say THANK YOU from the bottom. Of my heart to you and the other good Samaritans that rescued my father yesterday!!

He is still in the hospital and believed to have had a stroke.

We are having NO luck at all getting his truck out of the bay. I am in Arizona and do not know this area. I have called every towing company and so far no luck. Holiday Sunday and we are hitting a wall.

I want to reach out to the community. I am desperately looking for help. AAA won’t tow if the truck is submerged. But I cannot imagine if it’s sunk in the mud anyone can pull it out at low tide. If it’s under water even partially I would think it could be recovered? At least it would not be dredging the mud?

This is a total nightmare!! Does anyone know if there is a 4×4 community I could reach out to?

Here is my email address if anyone has any ideas that could help. [email protected]. We are desperate and could use any assistance.

Thank you very much.

Hey Tara.my name is Misty Kelly is my mom.your Dad is the only Dad I have ever had . I wish I would have known that this had happened sooner I thought he was already in Arizona I’m always the last one to find out I guess. If I would have known I would have helped I do know a bunch of people with four-wheel drives. I’m just glad he’s alive and unfortunately I’m introducing myself under these circumstances I just wanted you to know if I would have been told earlier I would have came forth and helped but I barely found out God bless dad and your family

Just to add to the available info, I spoke to a Eureka police late this afternoon in the Wharfinger parking lot and he said the submerged truck is going to be pulled out tomorrow. I did not ask for anymore details
