January? Already? Wow!

While the museum is closed again, we’re taking this time to plan out next year’s events- from remote tea tastings to panel presentations to virtual events. Here is a sneak peek at what’s coming up in January:

Book Club with discussion featuring author and professor Dr. Cutcha Risling Baldy

January 9, 3 pm

Join us for an informative and lively discussion of the book “We are Dancing For You: Native Feminisms and the Revitalization of Women’s Coming-of-Age Ceremonies” with author and Professor of Native American Studies, Dr. Cutcha Risling Baldy. Baldy is Hupa, Yurok and Karuk, enrolled with the Hoopa Valley Tribe and is the co-founder of the Native Women’s Collective, a local nonprofit promoting Native arts, culture, leadership and community. The book is available for purchase in limited quantities at the Eureka Visitor Center (in the foyer of the museum) starting December 23, and through special order at Eureka Books and other local bookstores. This discussion will be conducted via Zoom. Send an email to [email protected] to be put on the list to receive the link the day before the event.

“Wild Teas” Sponsored by Cher-Ae Heights Casino

January 24, 4 pm

This exciting new program offered by the Clarke Museum is a multisensory adventure into understanding native plants that have been used by local tribes in teas since time immemorial. Each participant will receive a collectible mug, tea strainer, sample of teas, and access to a Zoom meeting link where a small group of presenters including Dessa Gunning of the Trinidad Rancheria explain the names and uses for the various plants that are in the tea blends. Here’s snippet of Dessa’s biography:

“I was a sickly child and I would spend two weeks or longer with my kue-chos (grandmother) in the summer. I had uncontrolled Asthma and many allergies. When I stayed with Kue-chos she would make me all sorts of tea. It was not until I spent time with my aa-wok Aunt Juanita Samuels that I learned what all those teas were and how they helped me. She was a master Herbalist.  I learned about local teas that grow wild around us and their medicinal value. It changed how I look at that simple cup of tea,  realizing it was a healing living thing that created wellbeing. I now share this knowledge with my tribe and others by providing  cultural programs and as a Librarian for Trinidad Rancheria.”

There are only 50 spots available, so be sure to reserve your spot early as we expect it to fill up fast! Tickets are $30 per person. Each participant will be entered to win a special door prize- a tea pot and set of four mugs custom made by Jessica Lourence (Yurok/Hupa) featuring a local basket design housed in a handmade wooden box by Kenny Childs (Yurok). “Standing room only” tickets (which will get you the zoom link to participate in the event but not the tea or mug) are available for $10. There are 50 of these tickets available as well. The Zoom link will be sent to all paid participants the day before the event.

Participants can pay for their tickets online at clarkemuseum.org or in person at the Visitor Center, located in the foyer of the museum. Participants will be notified when their mug and tea are ready for pickup at the Visitor Center. We can ship, for a fee. Please contact the museum directly to coordinate mailing if you need your items mailed to you. We cannot guarantee that mailed orders will arrive on time if they are ordered after Monday, January 18 so order early!

Additional updates about this and our other events planned for this year will be shared through our social media pages, website, and email newsletter.
