Eureka Upgrades Its Community Notification System

This is a press release from the City of Eureka:

The City of Eureka is now working with Everbridge, the worldwide leader in unified critical communications, to keep residents, staff and emergency personnel safe and informed with quick and reliable emergency notifications and public service announcements. Everbridge will replace the current CodeRED system and residents who previously were enrolled in CodeRED will need to register with Everbridge.

The City of Eureka will use the Everbridge emergency notification system called “Eureka Alert!” to alert residents about a variety of events, ranging from severe weather, fires, floods and other emergencies, to more routine announcements, such as road closures and water utility maintenance. Messages will be sent to residents on their preferred contact paths—cell phone, SMS, home phone, email, fax, pager and more—to ensure real-time access to potentially lifesaving information.

“We have a commitment to ensure public safety, community awareness and emergency response. To uphold this, when critical information and public service announcements are available, we need to reach our residents as quickly and reliably as possible,” said Miles Slattery, City Manager/Emergency Services Director. “The Everbridge emergency notification system allows the City of Eureka to disseminate this information across all types of devices, ensuring residents have access to real-time public information when they need it the most.”

How Do You Enroll for Notifications?

It’s simple, as it only takes about a minute to enroll! Visit the City of Eureka’s Everbridge Information page for enrollment instructions: Everbridge Information Residents can register from their PC, tablet or mobile device. Enroll now and be prepared!

I just signed up, pretty easy. There is a test button at the end to confirm. The call came almost immediately, the text came four minutes after the call. (If that was to warn me of the subduction zone earthquake, and I only signed up for text, I would have a mere eleven minutes to react.) I still sport a flip phone, so it may be different/faster for most people. There is also an app that I obviously couldn’t download. I did also get a registration email confirmation right away.
Good luck all.

I’m coming to this topic a little late; I just now (Jan. 5 ) heard a PSA on KMUD and the word “Everbridge’ caught my attention. Why ? Because I’ve taken a lot of time to investigate, enroll in, and spread the word about the potential of another Everbridge program know as ‘Humboldt Alert’, which is operated by Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services (OES). Both Humboldt Alert and Eureka Alert claim to operate as mass notification systems, just different areas. Humboldt Alert can be accessed at https://humboldtgov.org/2014/Emergency-Notifications. Eureka Alert can be accessed at https://www.ci.eureka.ca.gov/depts/cm/emergency_services_everbridge.asp. If you want to enroll in both, you just have to use separate contact info for each.
Whereas Humboldt Bay Fire appears to be the principal partner in the Eureka Alert system, CalFire (along with dozens of its co-operating Volunteer Fire agencies) is a principal partner in Humboldt Alert. Thus, Humboldt Alert is in an excellent position to notify enrolled residents of the County in the event of a rapidly developing wildfire with updates on evacuation recommendations.
Which is what they told me …
