Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On Dec. 3, 2020, at about 7 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Special Services Division was dispatched to a search and rescue in the Humboldt Bay just northwest of the Fields Landing Boat Launch.

According to the reporting party, a boat with three occupants had run aground on a mud flat in the bay and were unable to get to shore. Due to the boat’s location, a United States Coast Guard rescue vessel was unable to safely reach the boat.

HCSO Special Services Division and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Posse responded to the scene. Utilizing the Posse’s airboat, emergency personnel were able to reach the stranded boat and rescue the occupants. No one was injured during this incident.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Posse and the United States Coast Guard for their assistance with this rescue operation.

Better than the sailboat that hit rocks during a minus tide in fog down at Shelter Cove many years ago. A coast guard helicopter sent down to assist hit the cliff with a loss of all aboard.

I think that boat came off with relatively light damage when the water came back up.

We were in the Hookton channel one day and some Coast Guard rookies tried to come across that flat in a RIB to inspect our boat or something. They cut across the flat from the FL boat ramp and started plowing mud as soon as they left the channel, pouring the coal to it as the boat kept slowing down. Pretty soon someone woke up to what was going on and they cut the engines. Took them about half an hour to pole their way back to the channel.
Felt sorry for them as they were just so eager to do their job. I’m sure their PO showed them where the chart locker was and gave them some homework.
