Sneaker Waves Predicted Today

The National Weather Service in Eureka warns of possible sneaker waves today and large breakers tomorrow.

They tweeted this morning,

A large northwesterly swell will bring the threat of sneaker waves today and large breakers on Thursday. Sneaker waves mean there is an increased probability of set behavior in the waves and lulls of up to 30 minutes between the largest waves. Never turn your back on the ocean.

Please take extra care if you visit the ocean today. The North Coast has claimed several victims when a sneaker wave unexpectedly engulfs them and pulls them off the beach.

Nine years ago in late November of 2012, after a wave pulled their dog in to the water, three members of the close-knit Kuljian family lost their lives trying to save the dog and each other.
