Pretty much a daily thing around here now. Its horrible but I’m starting to get desensitized to all the vehicle vs pedestrian accidents/deaths at this point. I firmly believe the inherent homo Saipan trait of observation and awareness, is getting evolved out. I was taught, and will teach my son that cars will kill, cars always have the right away because they can kill you. Always walk on the inner edge of roads or sidewalks in case shitty drivers not paying attention jump the curb and kill you(seen it before). And lastly look both ways before you cross a road, and act as if every driver is a high/distracted on their cell phones and react/act accordingly. Perhaps we need to start teaching basic human skills again, because along with observation, and awareness. We are losing empathy, compassion, pride, and leadership. just my 2 cents

“act as if every driver is a high/distracted on their cell phones and react/act accordingly“.

In the modern world every driver actually is distracted. And I agree that practicing defensive walking in eureka is a must. Drivers need to wake up and slow down tho, the hwy goes thru a town with people in it.

When traveling on 4th and 5th streets, my situational awareness is on it highest alert for pedestrians , especially at night.
I do the speed limit of 30 mph, but only to be passed regularly by other drivers doing 5 to 15 mph faster.
Hopefully we won’t end up like L.A. , being pulled over for doing the speed limit. and have a LEO asking you why you were going so slow.

you’d think that a small city with the worst traffic accident statistics in the entire state (yes, Eureka is at the top now) would do something about it, but unfortunately it seems to be getting worse

While driving through eureka yesterday my brother and I noticed that less than half of motorists use their turn signals.

This is so sad that this happens so often. Coming home from work in Eureka for 4 years I have had two very close calls. Just driving up to get groceries in the last 10 months it’s been insane in the streets. Pedestrians walk or run right out in front of you. I don’t know what happened in this instance? I hope they are going to be ok. I know the streets are fairly dark but this seems to be a weekly occurrence. I’d be devastated if I hit someone with my vehicle. Maybe they could put flashing lights on the crosswalks. Enforce jaywalking with tickets. Something to cut down on this. I know it’s not always the pedestrians fault. But they are a real hazard on 101 going through town.

I am a daily pedestrian around 4th and 5th street in eureka. Maybe once a week traffic stops while I wait to cross 4th or 5th. I wish there was some real traffic enforcement in eureka, but I rarely see anyone pulled over on 4th or 5th.

We all know the pedestrians that jump in front of cars or constantly jwalk are usually out-of-it homeless. Why do they do that because no one will stop to let them cross most of the time. The hwy goes thru a town with people in it and the drivers seem so freakin putout to have to step on their breaks for people. The drivers/vehicles/driver habits in eureka, especially on the 101, is the problem.

agree with you 100%. My experience as a responsible cyclist and pedestrian is that cars think they are the priority and that if there is an accident the pedestrian or cyclist it is usually assumed to be at fault. We need to move away from auto-centric city planning.

Flashing lights? You mean the street lights with crosswalks at them? It’s not that hard to no get hit by cars…….. they make sounds, they have lights, and you know they can kill you. Some people just don’t have basic human survival skills, or they love kissing head lights.

are you regularly a pedestrian that lives in that area? It is very difficult to get around on foot in that area because despite there being businesses and residential since it is 101 folks don’t follow the laws regarding yielding to pedestrians trying to use the crosswalk

I agree with Humboldt Lady. The unfortunate part is EPD has never considered traffic patrol a priority, much less pedestrian patrol. They are too busy trying to find “real” criminals to be bothered with the main reason they exist, public safety. Too much time is spent on stupidity like the recent supporting of rioters. You don’t have to look far to see distracted driving, driving under the influence, etc. You don’t have to look far to see the same with pedestrians. If the EPD won’t take back our streets, who will?

Lmfao, first youbsay they don’t care about public safety, then you give a clear example of them doing so with pedestrians and vehicles at the same time! Get over yourself keyboard warrior!

Drivers should never assume that a pedestrian sees them when crossing a roadway (legally or otherwise) or that the pedestrian won’t cross until after their vehicle has passed.

And pedestrians should never assume that a driver sees them and/or is going to stop for them, even if they doing so in a crosswalk or other legally designated area or crossing.

However, it seems both drivers and pedestrians have (intentionally) become less observant and more reckless since the first covid lock down earlier this year, with both ignoring traffic laws that are designed to help keep both sides safe.

Unfortunately, mutual awareness and respect happening consistently by both sides is something IMO I doubt we will ever see.

I am a pedestrian that was hit and left for dead when I was in the cross walk with the legal right of way. I also have the privilege of being a doctor that serves this community and takes care of the many pedestrians that are hit around here. Why does everyone assume it is the pedestrians fault when someone is hit by a car? Have you ever walked, biked or driven through Eureka? There are not many safe places for bikers and pedestrians and not everyone has the luxury of owning a car. We have so many drives here that are distracted or impaired and many accidents are their fault as well. We need better infrastructure for all modes of transportation and we need police that will enforce traffic laws. If you want to be part of the solution check out slowfstreet.com

I’m with you. I put it on law enforcement. So many times I have seen police in Eureka witness cars zooming by people in crosswalks and not take any action. You only have to stand for about half an hour at any crosswalk within a few blocks of the courthouse to witness this.
I put any crosswalk death of a pedestrian at the feet of the police. They need to protect lawful pedestrians.

Yes, law enforcement should be at every single crosswalk in eureka, that way they can jump in between the vehicle and pedestrian before the moment of impact, stopping the car with their Superman muscles

Just enforcement of the law would be sufficient. It is illegal to enter a crosswalk occupied by a pedestrian! The fine is not insignificant. I know you were being sarcastic but people no longer feel compelled to obey the law. God help you if you have to lift your foot off the gas as onto the brake.

Wait I thought we wanted to defund the police. Bring out the social workers to hold our hands as we cross the street. Also Nancy where is the next covid relief check ?

Excellent suggestion Mountain Man, all those social workers need new duties. Perhaps crossing guards, like the ones outside schools, at every corner. And training seminars on how to cross the street. And helmets and padding so if we do get hit, it won’t hurt so much. As for the next check, Nancy has her boy in the WH, one way or another (and the Chinese are so very happy Beijing Biden “won”) so the Dems won’t be doing anything for the little guy until the next election.

Crossing guards will only last until the money runs out. Then they’ll find a way to replace them with robots, or something simpler, like, traffic lights.

OMG. Bakersfield, been a long time since I was there…

Twenty red lights in his honor
Thank you Jesus, thank you Lord
I had an arrangement to meet a girl, and I was kind of late
And I thought by the time I got there she’d be off
She’d be off with the nearest truck driver she could find
Much to my surprise, there she was sittin’ in the corner
A little bleary, worse for wear and tear
Was a girl with far away eyes

Hope they are ok. Maybe reducing the speed limit would help, even by 5 mph? Or more money to hire more officers for traffic patrol?

A Major freeway that runs the whole length of a small town(city?)? The basic premise of this seems illogical. Maybe local traffic could use the waterfront circuit to bypass 101? It’s parallel & could be made to be much more scenic.

I was at a red light near there the other day, waiting. Light turns green for me, I start to go and immediately have to stop because a couple walking their bikes decides right then to cross the street in front of me. Just taking their time, totally oblivious. I get that pedestrians always, technically, have the right of way but they’re also supposed to honor the light system at busy intersections. Just walking out into the street without paying attention, as if that right of way was a natural law of physics and there’s zero possibility of danger… kind of seems like they’re lacking a sense of basic self preservation.
