Jesse William Dalrymple: ‘The Mushroom King’

This section includes both obituaries and memories. Honoring our loved ones who have died does not end immediately after their passing. We recognize that… so we’re extending our obituary section to include individuals who may have left a long time ago. If you want to remember someone who is gone, either recently or longer ago, please send a photo and your memories to [email protected].

Jesse William Dalrymple,Jesse William Dalrymple, of Willow Creek, CA died of lung cancer on November 11, 2020. He passed peacefully at home with family by his side. He was born September 23, 1952 in Dunkirk, NY to Bill and Betty Dalrymple. He grew up in Fredonia, NY with his two sisters Arlene and Darlene.

Jesse joined the Marine Corps in 1969 honorably serving four years stationed in North Carolina. It is fitting that he passed on Veteran’s Day as he was honored and proud to have served his country.

After his time in service, he married Lynne Cronk and moved to Fresno, CA to pursue a degree in forest management. It was during this time that his first child was born (Aja). Upon completion of his degree, he moved to Somes Bar, CA, working with the forest service for several years.

His career at the forest service was cut short due to a back injury. He remained in the Orleans/Somes Bar area, and during that time had two more children (Lucy, Kyle). Jesse William Dalrymple,It was there that he fell in love with the mountains and rivers. In particular, he loved rock hunting, gold panning, fishing and mushrooming.

In 1995, after his divorce from Lynne, he relocated to the Willow Creek, CA area with the love of his life, Carol Davis (Becky, James), who later gave birth to his fourth child, Carly. He continued to be an outdoorsman and an avid mushroomer. His passion for mushroom hunting led him to be locally known as the Mushroom King, a title he held proudly.

He is survived by his two sisters, Arlene and Darlene, four children, Aja Dalrymple, Lucy Szostkiewicz, Kyle Dalrymple, Carly Dalrymple, and two step children, Becky Davis and James Davis. He is preceded in death by his parents Bill and Betty Darlymple.

The King is dead. My condolences to his family and friends.

He will be missing one of the most prolific mushroom seasons, this fall, that I have seen in a long time.

Ernie- really? We went out the other day, and didn’t find a one. Usually at least a few popping up. Maybe I need to go look again this weekend. Usually when it rains a little then dries up, like it did this fall, it’s a bad year. But who knows- they are hard to predict.

We were fortunate enough to be on Jesse’s ‘mushroom delivery route’.
Always generous and fair, I’ll miss having a chat and cold beer with Jesse after he came down off the hill with his treasures.
Thanks buddy!
