Former Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman Who Stepped Down Unexpectedly Just Announced He Is Going to Be Shelter Cove’s Deputy

Tom Allman, former Sheriff of Mendocino County who stepped down unexpectedly last December with three years left on his term, has announced that he will be taking on the role of Shelter Cove’s vacant resident deputy post.

Allman who grew up in Southern Humboldt and attended South Fork High School with this reporter stated in a Facebook post, “I will be helping Humboldt County Sheriff Billy Honsal in a community which I loved as I was growing up. Shelter Cove is my new assignment. It is a close knit community of great people who care about their community and our environment.”

Many of Allman’s family live in the area and he has close ties here.

Allman was Sheriff for 13 years in Mendocino County and had been employed there about 34 years.

Shelter Cove’s General Manager Justin Robbins sent out a press release late this morning announcing, “Tom Allman will soon be serving our community and the Mattole Valley as the Shelter Cove Resident Deputy under the leadership of Humboldt County Sheriff Billy Honsal.”

Robbins said the “Deputy Allman’s swearing-in ceremony to be held on Tuesday December 1st at 11AM.”

Read Allman’s full post below:

I was going to post this after Thanksgiving, but apparently it has already been reported. I wanted you to hear it from me first.
Life allows choices, life also often allows adventures. My life has allowed me a couple Summers as a CDF Firefighter, a summer of ambulance work, 35 years as a peace officer and 12 months in Kosovo, working for the United Nations as an International Peace Keeper. To say say the least, I have worked with some of the best people in the Universe.

Well, my life has a new chapter beginning. As many of my friends and co-workers know, I attended South Fork High School in Southern Humboldt County and my love for Southern Humboldt equals the love and care which I have for Mendocino County.

I have many friends in Southern Humboldt and I know the area well. You may have guessed by now that I am going to be working in Southern Humboldt. I will be helping Humboldt County Sheriff Billy Honsal in a community which I loved as I was growing up. Shelter Cove is my new assignment. It is a close knit community of great people who care about their community and our environment.

I hope that many of my friends who have never discovered the “Lost Coast”, and my friends who know of this hidden jewel, will come up to Garberville, turn West, and come visit “The Cove”. There is a great RV Park, a brewery, a couple motels and some great restaurants. The views are fabulous, the fishing is great and the beaches are beautiful. The airport and golf course are nice and the deer assume that they own the golf course greens.

I’m looking forward to meeting with the residents and striving to improve some of the issues. I truly believe that being a good peace keeper means improving the quality of life in your community. It doesn’t mean going to work with the intention of just arresting someone or issuing a citation, those things may happen after other options are no longer viable. Being a peace keeper means making sure that the residents trust you and that local government is fairly represented. I assure you these ideals are how most law enforcement officers feel, and perform.

To the Residents of Shelter Cove, I look forward to meeting you. I look forward to seeing a community effort directed towards improving the quality of life for everyone.
Thanks for your support in this exciting new adventure.

CORRUPTION WAS ONE REASON!
Tom Allman mysteriously stepped down a few days before SB 1421 went into law! Why;
After four decades of secrecy, a 2019 change in California law opened up some internal investigations of police misconduct and serious uses of force. A coalition of news organizations formed to obtain this long-hidden information have published over 100 stories, uncovering abuses of power, false arrests and officers fired for misconduct only to be rehired by other agencies.

The law, SB 1421 grants access to use-of-force records — about when an officer fires a gun at a person or uses any kind force causing serious injury or death, regardless of whether an officer was disciplined. So why did Mendocino Sheriff Tom Allman step dowm right at this time ? Any guesses?

He said, She said, hearsay, Dui schmooi !!

That’s not a vicious rumor !!
You want a nice, juicy, vicious rumor about Tom?
You do, don’t you?
Here is one that you can really sink your teeth into…
But you are going to have to work for it, though, I am not going to make it easy for you.
I would, you see, but I am having some technical difficulties…

Kym, if you would be so kind, could you please assist me with the link?

I would be much obliged.

For the rest of you enquiring minds…
Here is the “Scuttlebutt”.

I challenge you to:

Google “Mendocino County Sheriff receives Medal of Valor from Governor…
28 September 2010.”

Then,
Notice how Tom is holding his left arm.

Looks kind of stiff and painful, still?

Maybe it’s my imagination.

Not sure if he had healed by this time, but both his arms were seriously burned in his attempt to rescue a woman from a fully engulfed vehicle, if I’m not mistaken, second degree, or partial thickness, if you prefer.

The kind of thing one has a hard time forgetting.

I still remember.

Sorry to remind you, Tom.

All you naysayers and keyboard jockeys should keep quiet until such time as you lay it on the line like he did.

Then, and only then, feel free to spout your, well, vitriol…

You just might…

I appreciate what he did.

He got guts. Real guts.

And Heart. True Heart.
Why is it that…
“No good deed goes unpunished.”

Cut him some slack.

He’s a bargain at any price, in my book.

He’s the real McCoy.
He’s already proven he won’t just bolt when shit gets real.
That’s the true test.
He passed with flying colors.
See that Medal of Valor?
It hangs with The Red, White, and Blue.

Welcome back to Humboldt, Mister Allman.

You are an inspiration, and you have my utmost respect.

Salute.

Kym,
It seems you and Tom were classmates, would it be too far off as a friend, classmate and reporter of one of the best blogs in Northern California to actually do a Tom Allman Interview and get to- as well as diclose to the public the real reason Mr Allman stepped down from the $150,000 per year elected job of Mendo County Sheriff to accept a huge pay cut as a deputy Sheriff in a neighboring county. Please ask the pertinent questions, I know many are fearful of Mr. Allman, but you are the schnizit, and besides: the community deserves honesty and transparency!

Because he tried to make real change and Mendo doesn’t care. He tried to implement this wonderful mental health program that Mendo desperately needs and no one would support him. They showed they don’t care about their citizens over and over again and he got tired of fighting for something no one else believed in

Before you can become a cop in Calif you’ve got to meet P.O.S.T. standards, which are set by the State of California–they can be Googled for your perusal.

P.O.S.T. is an acronym for Peace Officer Standards and Training, which is a State agency that monitors/enforces State training standards.

Google it.

Tom,
This is good news.
I don’t live at the Cove, but that is not why.😁.
I have a great deal of respect for you.

For going above and beyond the call of duty.

I might not always agree with you on everything, but one thing that is for damn sure, is that you do have courage.

The kind of courage that is very rare.

Very rare indeed.

A stroke of luck for the Cove.

Nice going Honsal, and I do mean that sincerely.

A very wise choice.

Stay Safe, Tom.

Sorry to say the community has changed some since you left. However, you are right, there are still some great people live here. It sounds like you should have joined the Shelter Cove Chamber of Commerce. Your only obvious flaw to belong to the chamber is that you forgot to mention that everybody in Shelter cove has a pet fox that “steals” the cat food that they put out.
I remember working with you in the fire department years ago. I hope that you do as well with your new job. Humboldt county just saved a ton of money on training. Look forward to visiting with you when things get back to normal.

Please do some research Kym, what is the real amd honest reason Tom Allman retired early from a very high paying job to work for less than half that amount in a neighboring county. Obviously there is allot more to the story including accusation of inappropriate sexual misconduct right here on this thread! Why is the media and this blog protecting Tom, I know people are scared of Tom and his “good old boys” chances of seeking revenge. Jealousy or a bone to pick. I had breakfast with Tom for many years in Ardellas in Willits. Enjoyed many a good conversation on many a topic, most while he was a deputy. Nobody is perfect my friend, but I think Humboldt and Shelter Cove are getting a smart, level headed deputy. I remember that Tom has always, from day one, been against meth, and never went after the mom and pop pot growers. His priorities were right. Humboldt could have gotten another skin head over zealous hot head. They are very lucky imo.

Your comments do nothing to absolve Mr. Allman from any potential wrongdoing that he may have taken part in or happened under his command. Vindictive, jealousy, vengeance are some of the strongest reasons dark secrets have ended up making their way into the light throughout history.

There is a difference between friendly meals, conversation and official capacity.

I know for a FACT Bill is aware of the material matter. However, his decision to place Tom in an official capacity is only and I say ONLY do to the GJT being sealed.

As such, moot. For placement purpose.

It is also a FACT that Dave has been eyeing Tom since 2018. I wouldn’t go as far as to say Mr. Anderson sought an indictment… … … ?

Definite Standard Operating Procedure guaranteed , but, who cares, will you be stifled into submission and silence by a bully thug organization of highly trained killers? After all TA is a God to many of his supporters who don’t dare to think for themselves. If TA broke the law, which many suspect by his sudden and unannounced early (by 3 years) retirement of the Highest Paying Job in Mendocino County, only to accept a job in a neighboring County for pennies on the dollar, then we all deserve to know why, where is the personel file, where is the disciplinary report; SB 1421 gives us all a right to this information, and, as lead Sheriff, who would have filled out a disciplinary report on TA? Or was TA once again above the law and gets to do what ever he wants because he is above the law. Good thing Matt Lafever is doing an investigation and will begin doing the proper FOIA requests to get to the bottom of this blatant corruption. Kym: let people speak freely, stop deleting comments, let the people openly speak on this matter please! This corruption in the MCSO has been going on for far too long… the people are asking questions, will the crimes be swept under the rug again?

I am not Donnie. Donnie has a high opinion of T.A. surprisingly.

In case your wondering… Al Capone saved a cat in a tree in Lincoln Park. Medal worthy? That’s for better minds like the governor.

I would say with certainty to my daughters and any female 15-35. If and when Tom pulls you over, do not be afraid to dial 911 and ask for an additional officer. Keep the 911 operations on the line. Insist the call be recorded and logged with the WC.

This is litterally the individual you are welcoming with open arms to your extremely remote town.

I’m sure you wouldn’t go so far as to say that the medal ‘was’ deserved.

Turning something positive into a double negative.

Sounds about right…
For a hater.

I wouldn’t go as far as to say it doesn’t sound wrong.

See what I did there?

I will say that some of the most worthless, corrupt people/ LE don’t have any medals at all.

In case you were wondering…
Many of them took an oath as well.

And they are the kind of self serving, self preserving, pieces of crap that would throw a hero under the bus, but never lift a finger to save someone’s skin or help someone out of a bind, ever.

Nope, all they will do is inflict their own overblown self perceived delusion of superior morality or worth on someone with true qualities, turning their back on them in their hour of need, as if they
were somehow serving a greater good, like some petty wannabe.

Have you ever tried to pull someone out of a fully engulfed vehicle?

If you haven’t, you are talking out of your ass.

If someone pulls someone out of a burning car, yet is corrupt and has many skeletons in the closet, we dont look past the skeletons and act as if the only thing they were doing was pulling people out of burning cars: rescuing someone from a burning car is great, but there are more issues and allegations here of a very serious nature which should not be overlooked on some premise that TA is a “hero”. I have rescued people out of enormous surf, raging rivers and burning buildings for 25 years, I guess I am a hero and now I should have a free pass to do anything I want too…… incredible!

I’m really getting a kick out of the comments. There must be some serious criminal activity in Shelter Cove for so many to be worried about a retired Sheriff being hired. So much indeed, that they are dreaming up conspiracy theories and speculation as to why he retired. You poor pitiful people….see if you live a criminal free life, you would welcome this man into your community. We did not imply TA was corrupt, we just said there is deep seated corruption in the MCSO and that there must be a very good reason to retire from an elected job 3 years early and take a job with a pay cut as a deputy in an adjoining county. There is a range of guesses floating around this post as well as in the community. We all deserve to know the circumstances that are allegedly sealed in grand jury transcripts according to other posters on this blog and according to community talk. T A is a public servant not a god or a king. He is not above the law. He is just another civilian now. We the bosses of the public servants deserve to know with full transparency and honesty unless it is protected under medical privacy laws. Many people thought this was very odd and suspicious last December when TA announced his early retirement: the fact he is working as a deputy in another County raises many suspicions.
