Cal Fire Assists California State Parks With Prescribed Fire

Prescribed burn [Photos from Cal Fire]Press release from Cal Fire:

[Yesterday], CAL FIRE assisted California State Parks at Prairie Creek State Park with a planned 122- acre prescribed burn. The prescribed burn consisted of two plots along Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. Frost from low overnight temperatures delayed ignition, but by midday conditions were favorable for the desired effects. The intent of the burn is to retain native grass species and habitat for elk.

California State Parks staff commanded the incident, provided for traffic control along the parkway, and provided firefighting staff to conduct firing and holding operations, as well as ensure the safety of park visitors. Personnel and equipment from Redwood National Park assisted as well. CAL FIRE provided engines, hand crews, and overheat personnel to assist.

The CAL FIRE Humboldt – Del Norte Unit would like to remind the public that these burns are coordinated operations involving firefighting equipment and experienced staff and special permitting is required. The CAL FIRE burn suspension is still in effect. Residents are encouraged to take this time to build and prepare debris piles by covering them to keep them dry. This will help ensure debris piles are consumed thoroughly with a diminished threat of spreading to surrounding vegetation once the burn ban is lifted.

Timing is way counterintuitive. We’ve had enough smoke for now…

Narrow minded people with no practical knowledge or expertise, such as those above, are a major contributing factor to the continued occurrence of large destructive fires. Attempts to conduct large scale prescribed burns have been obstructed for decades because “omg the smokes!” “The poor critters!” “There are already fires,” or other selfish and poorly informed complaints.

And then you scream and cry when a large wildfire erupts.

News flash: One part of a 750 mile long stare can be dry enough to sustain a wildfire while another, within 5 miles of THE OCEAN, May be in ideal weather and fuel conditions for prescribed fire.

And “waiting for the first rain” in November likely means a season ending event and loss of a perfectly good burn window.
