St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka Commemorates Anniversary with Centennial
Press release from St. Joseph Hospital:
On Sunday, November 1st, St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka will celebrate our legacy of 100 years of healthcare services in Humboldt County with the planting of a commemorative “Centennial Redwood” tree at the hospital. The event honors the opening of the original St. Joseph Hospital on November 1, 1920 by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The Redwood tree symbolizes the stability and longevity of the hospital’s century long commitment to care for the community.
St. Joseph Hospital was the first hospital in the St. Joseph Health system. In 2016, St. Joseph Health came together with Providence Health Services to form Providence St. Joseph Health, an organization with 51 hospitals and over 120,000 employees across seven western states.
“The hospital’s founding Sisters had first come to Eureka to start a school in 1912,” said Roberta Luskin-Hawk, M.D, Chief Executive, St. Joseph Health Humboldt County. “But early in the flu pandemic of 1918, they recognized that the critical need was to provide quality health care to the community. We are celebrating their amazing faith, foresight and flexibility.”
Today, 100 years later, that resilience and conviction is still on display. Like the Redwoods that grow out of the fertile soil along California’s rugged North Coast, St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka has stood the test of time – the living embodiment of resilience and longevity. And like the Redwood, St. Joseph Hospital’s ability to sustain the Mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph and remain a stable source of care for the community is due to the networking of its “roots” with community care partners and the sister hospitals that stemmed from this original hospital in Eureka.
“This hospital is only here today because of the dedication of the Sisters, the partnership with our broader organization, and the generous support of businesses and individuals in our community who care about serving those in need,” said Paul McGinty, Chief Philanthropy Officer, St. Joseph Health, Humboldt County.

I’d be more impressed if they help replant recent burn zones. One single symbolic tree isn’t going to cut it. Get those nuns a’ plantin’.
🕯🌳I’ll second that.
You’re upset that a private hospital isn’t replanting a burn zone that the Forest Service let get out of control? What’s next Pizza Hut needs to fix pot holes? Of wait that’s Dominos
roflmao, good one Mike.
Fix the problem and quit bitching about it. Imagine that.
It would seem that you’re the only only complaining about nuns not illegally planting 1 million acres of forest fire. They sell shovels and trees at the store if you want to lead by example. Youre going to want some bail money if you do that on forest service land though
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange have not been in control of St. Joes in decades. It’s run by a large corporation that is hiding under the guise of a non-profit entity. My father was chief of staff at the hospital when the sisters were in charge, and back then they were more concerned with taking care of patients than making a profit.
Trumps takin care of that. look up the billion tree pledge.
wonderful ! glad to have em’ here.
The hospital is only here because of the money paid by the patients. I sometimes wonder if it is a hospital or a banking institution!
Trumps Trillion Tree pledge is taking care of that issue aswell. Trump speed.
Trump 2020
🕯🌳Trump ain’t taken care of shit. Tell us what he’s done for you personally? How’s your 401k? How’s the future of your Social Security with the tax deferment becoming permanent if gets reelected? Pay attention.
For me personally? He appointed Kenneth Lee to the 9th circuit court who was key to overturning the magazine ban in California
I was born there and worked there. Good times!
