STOP BLAMING THE PEDESTRIAN! I have been in crosswalks and nearly hit MANY MANY TIMES in Humboldt. It is the crazy, clueless, distracted drivers! They want to kill us. Twenty years experience with this. ZERO near misses when I lived in Bay Area or Los Angeles in the nineties. Humboldt and especially Eureka drivers care about their coffee drinks and their grow dozers not human life. A couple of weeks ago I saw a college age dude sucking on a bong while driving in Eureka. Not the first time. YOU DRIVERS ARE SICK SICK SICK. The drug culture has driven you mad. GET HELP.

Just this week I have come across two people on my way to work crossing the street in the crosswalk at Broadway and Henderson. Neither of them had the right of way as they crossed on red/do not walk. One was on foot – a pedestrian. The other was on a bike – not a pedestrian and had no lights or reflectors. Both were in all black. Fortunately, both crossed without ruining an innocent driver’s day. If either had been hit it would have been their own fault for not following the law. Yes, some Eureka drivers and idiots who only care about themselves. I’m not one of them. Everyone must take responsibility for their own safety. Just because there’s a crosswalk doesn’t mean I’m going to just blindly walk out into traffic.

First thing, when i was in school we were taught the pedestrian always has the right of way.

Also, if we are going by anecdote, just the other day I saw a driver blow through the flashing lights that a pedestrian wishing to cross 101 (which also goes through the heart of my town) can activate by pressing a button. The pedestrian was lucky they has just started crossing or they would have been hit.

All the other drivers were stopped, including me.

The exception is where there are traffic lights and crosswalk lights. You can actually get a traffic citation for crossing on red.

My very wise father had a consistent response whenever I said, “We had the right of way there.” He said, “You may have had the right of way, but you can die providing it. ”

Let’s stop with all the “It’s all about me” BS and remember being polite as well as take responsibility for our own safety.

The pedestrian does not always have the right of way, only if they are already in the crosswalk while the vehicle is approaching and has time to stop. If a pedestrian steps into a crosswalk while a vehicle is approaching from 20 ft away at 35 mph then the pedestrian does not have the right of way. You still need to look before entering the crosswalk and, if the vehicle does not stop, you cannot just walk on out.

Really , even if the pedestrian has the right of way so does the butterfly that gets splattered on the windshield. Pic your battles

Sane arguments can be applied to pedestrians.

I’ve also crossed many, many streets, and have yet to even be nearly hit even once. Maybe it’s something you’re doing? Like putting yourself in the path of vehicles before confirming they’re stopping?

A crack addict pedestrian was walking back and forth in Berkeley on the main drag at 2 in the morning I let him cross safely but I didn’t stop then a cop pulled me over and gave me a ticket for not stopping and then told me it was a sting operation gave me the ticket and I had to pay $200 .fine. now I always stop 4 crack addicts xcetera they have the right of way no matter what ,even if they got an AK-47 or a hand grenade.

This place is getting safer all the time, how many pedestrians get hit in Humboldt everyday that doesn’t make the news? From now on every pedestrian needs to wear a helmet and chest protector.

I think homo sapient are starting to de evolve back into our lizard brains. The only thing I can think of that would rationally and logically and reasonably explain whats going on.

Growing up as a child in the 70s I learned, and was taught quick, look both ways before you cross, wait for traffic. I learned that cars are scary and will kill you. Why isn’t any of this shit being passed down? Logic, reason, critical thinking, observation, empathy. These are all traits of post prefrontal cortex human species shit, that most people do not even have anymore. Were going back to a buncha, chimps running around fligging poo at eachother.

And lastly, they do not even have street lights, street signs, sidewalks over in Afghanistan. And people weren’t getting hit over there at all. Hell, in a convoy situation, we often just blew through streets right through traffic, and we never hit a living thing. Get your shit together Americans, your making us look bad.

But factor in that we have 100 times as many stop lights with crosswalks, and 1000 times for miles of sidewalks , 120 th not saying much.

And old song might apply. Everybody must get stoned. I think when you combine stoned drivers and stoned pedestrians you get driving and walking and bike riding chaos. No evidence, no research, just plain old thought.
