Discounted Compost Bins Available to Arcata Residents

This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

The Environmental Services Department is offering Soil Saver compost bins at a deep discounted price for Arcata residents. The popular compost bin retails for $100, and is currently available for $25.

There has been a significant increase in demand for groceries as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and many residents are spending more time working in their gardens. The Environmental Services Department recommends composting food, food-soiled paper, garden and grass clippings to help keep these materials out of the landfill.

“We are offering the Soil Saver at a discounted price to encourage residents to compost table scraps, grass and leaves so we can reduce the volume of yard debris and trash that is picked up and taken to the landfill,” said Mark André, Environmental Services Director for the City of Arcata.

Composting can reduce the amount of household garbage by 30 percent, and applying compost to gardens may also lower water bills by up to 30 percent and lessen the need for chemical fertilizers.

Proof of residency within Arcata city limits is required in order to make a compost bin purchase, which includes a City water bill, a Recology Arcata bill or rental contract agreement.

Residents who wish to pick up a bin in-person at the Environmental Services Department office, located at 736 F Street, may do so Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. When entering City Hall, community members are required to wear facial coverings, practice physical distancing and follow all COVID-19 health and safety protocols in place.

To make composting more accessible to Arcata residents during the COVID-19 pandemic, compost bins may be also purchased by calling the Environmental Services Department at (707) 822-8184. Curbside pickup and free delivery are available to all who make a purchase.

So this helps people in a apartments not one bit. Or home renters where the landlords don’t want the yards all tore up.

Folks in apartments who wish to compost kitchen “waste” might consider a small earthworm set-up. They take up about 2 square feet and are about 30″ high with 4 compartments. The space and maintenance is similar to a 30 gallon aquarium.
Costs about $100, and are extremely efficient . No bones or meat. of course.
The red worms sold as bait work well. They are suggested for an out-door patio or laundry room. They need to remain cool, with minor water added as needed.
Lots of literature and devices are available. Fun and productive for house-plants.

Hay Arcata, make sure you put all your zero waste celebratory gear in your compost bins so you can use it in your garden next summer.
