Don’t know how the accident happened, but I sure hope the driver will be fine.

Going too fast?

Every day all up and down the highway semis are driving crazy fast speeds. Most of my freeway driving I set cruise right at 65. Semis pass me regularly like I’m standing still. I feel sorry for those they hit. I feel sorry for other drivers that are delayed because they wreck. I have a hard time feeling sorry for the drivers who crash.

What is it, 3 milk trucks from the same company dumped into Clear Lake. Lumber and logging trucks keep crashing all up and down 101 and other highways. 2 semis flip on Broadway and 5th in the same spot. Just slowing down and getting to the destination pays way better than crashing and accruing hospital bills. But the trucker ego of being a so much better driver proves wrong all too often.

Those trucks are governored to top out at 63. And they’re constantly being checked every time they pass an open weigh station. Carrying all that weight it difficult, not to mention the high winds we had yesterday. 101 is dangerous, especially in a big vehicle like that. As a driver myself I know a lot of these guys need to slow down and take it easy on these roads.

Apparently these guys know how to override the governing mechanism. They go 70 plus all the time on 101. They override in many states where there are no dual speed limits and truckers can legally drive 80 mph in some states. The difference is that 101 isn’t straight enough for these crazy speeds.

I don’t know for sure if this is the exact spot but there is a pretty good curve right near there which you definitely need to slow for especially if you are northbound.

Before Caltrans fixed it, the road was not banked correctly and centrifugal force actually fell away from the curve instead of into it. Still a bad stretch if you are not familiar with it.
