Last Thursday, October 8, a partial skull was found on Lost Coast Forestlands (LCF) property in a creek by one of the biologists working there. According to Tim Metz, contracted land manager for LCF, which he describes as “a conservation forestry company working to restore, protect and manage local timberlands,” the biologist thought it was an abalone shell but, once he picked it up, he knew he needed to call law enforcement.”It’s in the same area where the search for Margit occurred so that’s the working theory,” Metz said. Margit Pritchard is an older woman who went missing in the Piercy area in May of 2018. Neighbors are hoping that the skull may be her remains.Metz said that the skull was found upstream from the bridge about a 1/4 of a mile. Photographer Talia Rose captured an image of the creek for our readers above.Almost exactly 8 years ago, a whole skeleton was located buried within a couple miles of where this skull was located. At this point there is no known connection between the two human remains.

The mill built with such high hopes only to be doomed with the owner’s death before it ever opened? Fully sealed by the fact that an earthquake and consequently a fire altered the course of the planned railroad, sending it through the untameable eel river canyon instead of along what we now now as highway 101 ?

ummm.. That is an interesting story Dinky.. Where’d you hear it? I only ask because the Andersonia Mill is the beginning of my driveway.. I’ve lived on this road for 29yrs and my family has been here for 130yrs.. We know the Andersons personally and I’ve never heard this story before… Ill have to ask my father If the mill was in operation when he was pulling greenchain there in his teens.. I do admit that It would be something if he was doing that work in a mill that never operated…

I am referring to the original mill that was completed in 1905. In never began operations after Henry Neff Anderson was killed there in an accident during some final work. After sitting idle for almost 40 years, later Andersons built a new mill on the site and created the Indian Creek Lumber Company, which did operate. Margarite Cook and Diane Hawk wrote about it. That’s probably where Pops worked ☺️
That’s awesome that you live nearby and have such old family history there!

Chad- It was a Metcalf that came to town to fetch a doctor, and then to help Anderson to get over to the coast for treatment where he died. Your family, through marriage was quite involved in Andersonias past.

The idea of a young man pulling green chain for ghosts in a spectral mill would make an excellent spooky story, like Rip Van Winkle’s game of nine pins…

Which bridge? 101, green bridge, dimmick bridge? Peircy creek, Indian Creek?

I used to ride all around the Yokohama Highway up there and there were always sketchy growers hiding in the bushes or the one guy driving an old white pickup down the old logging roads.

It’s a great road to hike, from dimmick road to Usal beach, about 24 miles or so. The road from dimmick hooks onto Usal road around Mile marker 16 if I remember correctly.

Are you asking if anyone has been keeping up with the Jones’s?

When Fort Humboldt had the engine from Andersonia, a plaque described the mill that never ran and the accident that took Mr. Anderson’s life testing the head rig. On Donkey Days they would fire up the engine and give rides and retell the story of Anderson mill. Remember Piercy had three sawmills back in its heyday- Coombs, Dimmick who married into Anderson family, and Anderson. Most of Piercy worked the mills with make shift shacks springing up near the mills. Three of the original house still exist at Rabbit Camp with one of them occupied by Talia Rose herself. Wonder if Talia could inform us as to whether the photos are on the west side or east side of 101? Margit Pritchard lived east of 101. Low Gap creek runs through the top of the mountain and connects with the South Fork of the Eel River on land that was once owned by Tom Dimmick and Margarite Cook. Most of the forest land in this area is now Lost Coast Forestlands on both sides of 101. The trail from Usal on the coast was traveled by the Wylacki peoples to Red Mountain, hence the name Indian Creek. The Jones’s sold out long ago their 160 acres known as PROL Forest in Piercy when Phyllis Jones died of cancer. She was a scientist for Du Pont chemical corporation. But her land adjoined Barnum timber land which was sold decades ago to neighbors who wanted to make sure spring water was not contaminated with herbicide. With mountain lions and bears prevalent finding just a skull is possible. That was all that was found of Rainbow Mountain Walker days after he went missing.

Grant Anderson was working as the Bullbuck at the Dimmick Redwood Company in piercy back in the early 60’s when he was killed in an automobile accident just south of the mill in DeVoy Grove. I drove past the accident on my way to work splitting redwood splitstuff on the Andersonia. Piercy was not a very lucky place for the Andersons.

Piercy was good to my family when we lived there and I love that area like no other, a very special place. And I appreciate the stories that are shared about it’s past, thanks Ernie.

PS – Diana’s books are awesome and I suggest picking up a copy of each if you run across them. True Value in Redway used to have them at the checkout counter.

I’m a bit confused. Was there a skull with the skeleton in sneakers that was found in 2012? And if not, I’m guessing there is Hope the skull belongs to the skeleton in sneakers. 🤷🏻‍♀️
