Donald Dartt Mayhew

Donald Dartt Mayhew passed away on September 16, 2020 at the age of 78.

Don was born to James and Evelyn Mayhew in 1942. He graduated from South Fork High in 1960 was a lifelong resident of Southern Humboldt. His first job after high school was at the plywood mill in Briceland. From there he went to work in the grocery industry. He worked at the Mendes Store in Redway, Murrish Foods, and Peter Pan Market. He was well-liked by all his customers.

Don loved the outdoors. Weekends were spent hunting, camping, and hiking with his family. He also loved his many faithful dogs. He always had several and 9 at one time in his home.

Don is preceded in death by his father, James Sr. his mother, Evelyn, and his brother, James Jr.

He is survived by his children: Donald Jr (Stephanie) of Fresno, Tracy Smith (Roger) of Eugene, Oregon, Stacey Mayhew of Redway, CJ Mayhew (Connie) of Miranda. He leaves behind nine grandchildren, nephew Rick Mayhew (Amy) of Seaside and niece Candice Butler (Scott) of Willits. Also, five great nephews and nieces.

Private graveside services were held at the Briceland Cemetery on Sunday, Sept 27, 2020

I knew Don well in his younger years. I often worked with him in repairing the refrigeration at the stores that he worked in. He was a great and interesting fellow. It was sad to see his health deteriorate so badly in the few years near the end.

I’m still jealous of his red 1964 Chevy Impala that he had when we were kids. Happy cruising Don!
