Contracted Worker for Caltrans Struck and Injured by Vehicle This Morning

Pedestrian vs VehiclePress release from CHP:

On 10-07-2020, at approximately 5:40 AM, the Humboldt Area CHP responded to a crash in the safety corridor involving a privately contracted worker with Caltrans. Upon CHP arrival, it was determined that 46 year old Charles Hatherill, Jr., of Eureka, CA, was working in the southbound #2 lane of US-101, south of Indianola Cutoff Rd.. 65 year old Paul Giacomini, of Fortuna, was driving a 2001 Dodge pickup south in the #1 lane at this location. The #2 lane was closed due to construction and all southbound traffic had been had been diverted into the #1 lane. As Mr. Giacomini approached several work trucks parked within the #2 lane, Mr. Hatherill stepped out from between the trucks and into the path of the Dodge pickup. Mr. Giacomini was able to slow the Dodge, however, the front of the truck struck Mr. Hatherill causing him to fall to the ground. Mr. Hatherill had a complaint of minor pain and was transported to St. Joseph Hospital for further evaluation and treatment of his injuries. Mr. Giacomini was uninjured and there was no damage to the truck.

The CHP Humboldt Area Office is continuing to investigate this collision and asks anyone who may have information to contact the Humboldt Area CHP Office at 707-822-5981 or send an email to [email protected].

🕯🌳Well thank goodness there was no damage to the truck. But seriously I’m glad the worker wasn’t seriously injured.

I hope the construction worker takes a good hard look next time before stepping into an active traffic lane. Lucky to survive while playing “Dodge ball.” I feel sorry for the Dodge driver. Sounds like he was following the speed limit and paying attention. A few other speed zone racers could learn from him. Slow down in those zones please people.

Although this isn’t the driver’s fault, I am appalled at how fast people are driving past the construction crews. CHP could make a fortune if they sat out there with a radar gun. Slow down!

I don’t remember exactly how many months back, but a car slammed into a CalTrans truck that had an attenuator.
People be more considerate to the the workers!

Sorry to piss anyone off But several times I have seen workers working outside of the coned off area. They are playing a dangerous game and expecting drivers to know what they’re going to do. I nearly had my mirror taken off by a shovel when one of them moved outside of the cones. People travel through the construction zone at 20 to 30 mph which feels safe. But several times I have seen workers run across the clothes lines through open ones to the other side of the road. At this point I am over all of the construction in the Corridor. Eureka included.

This is a person who works on the highway as you speed past in your thousands of pounds of machinery. How about everyone slow down a little and stop driving like buffoons.
