Reports of Illegal Cannabis Growers Stealing Equipment and Pointing Lasers at Firefighters Battling the August Complex

Mendocino County Sheriff Matt Kendall has confirmed Cal Fire personnel staffing the August Complex Fire have reported multiple encounters with illegal cannabis growers, on one occasion being robbed of a water pump essential for firefighting efforts. Sheriff Kendall said the water pump theft occurred on Monday, September 28, along Mina Road outside of Round Valley.

A Cal Fire public information officer told us they could not speak to these issues specifically and referred us to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Cal Fire personnel who spoke to Sheriff Kendall, firefighters were approached by illegal cannabis growers who demanded Cal Fire’s water tenders be used to water illegal cannabis gardens. Kendall was told that Cal Fire personnel refused and carried on with their firefighting duties. The Cal Fire personnel explained to Kendall upon returning to the site Monday morning where they had encountered the cannabis growers, they found their gas-powered water pump gone.

Sheriff Kendall explained that illegal cannabis growers rely on a network of water delivery services that have been cut off since the August Complex began. Due to the necessity of access roads to expedite firefighting efforts, law enforcement has stopped allowing these water deliveries to the backcountry, Sheriff Kendall said.

Sheriff Kendall also spoke of reports he has received from firefighters in the field of laser pointers being directed at personnel throughout the night.

Sheriff Kendall said he expected more reports of these sorts of encounters because most fire personnel who have experienced them are still on the fire line and are not in a position to be reporting to law enforcement immediately.

While documenting the August Complex fire in the Lake Pillsbury region, Citizen Journalist Dylan Pankow told us he spoke with a Mendocino National Forest law enforcement officer about encounters with illegal cannabis growers. The law enforcement officer told Pankow cannabis growers had attempted to gain access to their grow sites in the disaster area by falsifying press passes. The officer told Pankow the fake press passes were “3’’x5’’ index cards with ‘PRESS’” written on them.”

Sheriff Matt Kendall, in a recent statement on the MCSO Facebook page, spoke to a concerning rise in crime associated with the illegal cannabis industry, saying, “The violence has become too much for our county to carry. Now is the time to stop pretending the illegal marijuana trade is a good thing.”

“Illegal” growers getting water deliveries? How did that escape the notice of officials before the fire?

for one how does cal fire workers know they are illegal growers and not legal growers trying to save their crops, they probably thought cal fire was there to deliver water to them lol, but really cal fire should keep their nose out of the cannabis business and learn something about putting fires out instead of putting all these people out this is bullshit now and everyone knows there working with the sheriffs departments to burn out illegal grows and jack up legal grows that already paid there taxes and will reap nothing for their smoked out ashweed except being holdup, shot, ripped off, and no one to serve and protect us, just like with wild fires, we need help from above not these try county jokers incharge and really people stop blaming everything on illegal growers anyone with half a brain knows how much crime and corruption legalization has brought to our counties, stop kidding yourselves

That image is an electoral map from Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign.

I’m not sure what the context is with your post, but I guess it’s along the “look how red everything is” line. Fair enough, but maybe a map of all the counties that buy black market would be more appropriate?

Kamala Harris is claiming a Biden administration will federally decriminalize, which would lead to a massive drop in enforcement and redirection of funding for enforcement nationwide. This would eventually lead to another crash in black market prices which would likely make illegal growing in Humboldt unprofitable for the majority.

I’m sure you can guess what effect that will have on the local economy.

The parallels with the repeal of alcohol prohibition are still relevant, so examining the economic and social history of counties where a lot of bootlegging occurred is worthwhile. But this is different in that federal decriminalization does not equate to legalization or regulation.

Then again, all politicians promise things people like to hear at election time, so who knows what will actually happen. Still, kind of ironic for you to support politics that perpetuate prohibitionist models which are directly linked to the growth and support of the organized crime and black markets you seemingly claim to dislike.

Since there is no proof that they are “illegal cannabis growers” the sheriff should probably use alleged, because the law states inoccent until proven guilty.
Look at the crime in Covelo, stabbings shooting, robberies, they have been happening for decades. Somehow now everything is the weeds fault.

Let’s say they were legal weed growers who were stealing water pumps from firefighters, and trying to gain access to their grows with fake press cards that have the word “press” written on 3×5 index cards. How does this change anything? Justifying the bad behavior of people who may or may not be part of an industry that you support doesn’t actually achieve anything positive. If anything, making the argument that these people may be legal marijuana growers actually makes the legal marijuana industry look worse, not better. This is a great example of how you should think before you comment, because with friends like you, the marijuana industry doesn’t need enemies.

Nobody was “robbed of a water pump.” Robbery is a face-to-face, usually threatening situation to take property from the victim. The water pump was stolen.

B&E isn’t “robbery,” unless there is a face to face encounter. It’s theft, illegal entry, etc.

You are accurate about the legal definition of “rob”. But Matt is writing for the layperson and I’m not too worked up that he used the informal definition which means to steal.

End prohibition and all the crime around cannabis will go away. It’s obvious! Blame the bullshit politicians who want the tax money from cannabis. Kendall is a joke for stating otherwise. He doesn’t want to end prohibition because he’ll be exposed as a worthless waste of taxpayers dollars.

Lets not forget the rookie ” fire managers” managing this August Complex are complete morons and incapable of coming up with a game plan to successfully put this fire out. They have purposefully and in Cahoots with Kendall kept areas not even in danger if fire closed with full intentions of destroying cannabis farmers livlihoods. IS THIS COMPASSION SHERIFF KENDALL? When the fire is no longer a danger open the roads back up, let people get back to their homesteads and farms. Our towns and communities in Mendocino County are going broke, our stores and restaurants are closing, our young people have no work, people are losing their homes and businesses. SHERIFF MATT KENDALL can get all emotional and unprofessional, but the fact is these farms create business for all those stores in town, Sparetime Supply , Mendo Mill, Grocery Outlet, Geigers, Home Depot, Freidmans Brothers, Safeway, Raleys, Costco, all our small shops, restaurants, eateries delis, feed stores, construction companies, salons, nail and spa businesses. They are paid with Cannabis Dollars! They all depend on Mendocino Cannabis to survive. Without Cannabis our towns will be completely broke, suicides and depression, violent crimes home invasions and robberies will increase. Sheriff Kendall; We dont all depend on government handouts and government ( welfare) paychecks to make ends meet, we are not all dependent on “Government Employee Welfare” like yourself. Time to rethink your politics. There is alot more to the picture than you short sighted emotions, time to grow up. Mendocino would never ever elect you with your past history. And you will not be elected with your hard handed no compassion techniques. Time to resign.

Sheriff Kendall is emotional and trying to rouse the emotions of the community, See most people do not support the war on marijuana in Mendocino, so Kendall is grasping for a straw to gain support for his failed 25 year carreer of trying to rid mendo of cannabis farms. Cannabis will be here long after Kendall is gone. He holds old grudges and is not in touch with the people of Mendocino County. Time to retire Kendall. Really, retire and go enjoy the rest of your life instead of waging war on your community like a hateful bigot.

All the water deliveries to large grows in that area went on all summer. Didn’t Sheriff Kendall say he was going to do something about Covelo? Here’s the deal- if you don’t stop them earlier in the season they get MORE invested and CLOSER to harvest and then if their water deliveries get cut off they are MORE DESPERATE – and more motivated to do desperate things. Do I have to explain this schedule to the sheriff?! The sheriff before him allowed that area to blow up w huge grows. Now we see the result. For Sheriff Kendall to say that ALL unpermitted grows do these kinds of heinous acts is unfair and very inaccurate. Focus on the kinds of grows that are actually doing these things to firefighters. We will all applaud that…

The law is not able to make emotional judgements about who “deserves” to be ignored. What you want is to be left alone to profit when you think what you are doing is okay. But that is your judgement, not anyone else’s. So in essence you want to be the arbiter of everything. Good luck with that.

Farce
Guest

It would be nice if I was the arbiter of everything. But in the meantime I think it’s more productive to just monitor roads for water deliveries (game cameras work) and use an eradication schedule that takes into account deps and long season so there is less payoff in replanting. I think especially hitting the area where this stuff is happening is better than pretending you will get every unpermitted grower in the county and watering down your resources and rhetoric in that way. Every single unpermitted grower I know wants guys who do stuff like this shut down. We would never do such stuff to our firefighters- we help our firefighters.

You may know people who would like those “who do stuff like this shut down” but it is unlikely they really want police activity that is effective in doing it because it would also stop their activity. That’s like saying only jail the bad robbers. It’s sort of innate that all of them have some measure of disregard for civilized standards of behavior and prefer pointing out that so-and-so is worse as a justification. Which it isn’t even when true.

I like clean water and fresh air. I liked the fishers who disappeared with the first clear cut pot grow, the pileated woodpecker who disappeared with the next three 2acre tree clearing exemption pot grows. I didn’t like the noise levels created by masses the chorus frogs that lived here but find that I miss them too when they left when their water was taken to grow pot. I liked opening my windows for fresh air without having to shut them right away when the room filled with pot stink from 200 feet away. I liked the little seasonal creek running through my field that disappeared forever after the grower put up his hoop house. It was a sad exchange for the privilege of living too close to people who routinely drop their IQ by 10% each day by numbing their brains and their civility with the product that means more to them than any of the things they killed off.

Actually growing pot itself did not do 90% of the damage but the greedy SOBs did it to make money. And it is a piss poor exchange. I don’t care what you want anymore than you care what I want. And if higher taxes actually checked the greedy, I wouldn’t object to it one little bit.

Did you miss my point guest? Prohibition is what drives the crime including environmental, around cannabis. In decades of the war on drugs what has been accomplished? Nothing! Not an inch gained while billions have been spent. Your rant should indicate that you’re against prohibition, since prohibition is the sole cause of the ills you ranted against. However you are for more taxes and more prohibition?!? Prohibition is a joke! People who believe in prohibition are the ones who need to check their heads.

I’ve been wondering for about 5 years which Cal Fire employee focused the laser device on my chest.

That is when everything started to go wrong.

Thought I was about to get canoed.

Terrified me.

And yeah they took equipment from me worth about $500 which was never returned.

So yeah it sucks to have that happen, I am well aware, they did it to me.

A laser is very threatening, can damage your eyes, and could be perceived, or actually be, a gun with a laser sight being aimed at you.

They don’t have any room to talk, however, as I have been on the receiving end of that one, courtesy of CalFire.

I definitely don’t condone it.

It would be nice if they figured out who did it.

I’m pretty sure I know who did it?

It’s been five years.

Think they give a shit about that?

Not likely.

I don’t believe a word from him about the true story. Just because he is the Sherriff doesn’t mean his moral compass is aligned in the right direction. Is is impossible to imagine a powerfully public servant and elected official could lie to the general public in order to validate his personal narrative? Surely we have seen this before. Let’s hear it from the mouth of Cal Fire. I call B.S.

Agreed-it is hearsay at this point, and just happens to match Kendall’s ‘let’s get tough’ narrative. If it IS true, f^&k those assholes. Think about it-if illegal growers pressured firefighters to water their grow, they most likely told them where it is.
Also, they say they returned the next day to find their pump was gone. So some thief took it. F#@k thieves, too, but it could have been anybody. Not entirely unpredictable that shit gets stolen when you leave it laying around.

Last night on KMUD Kendall said the pump was stolen between water runs. The report above implies it was stolen overnight.

Kendall has always been an ignorant racist redneck Sheriff; no wonder he has his sights set on Covelo, could it be he is racist and he hates indians and mexicans, it appears so. Just another non-elected sheriff trying to be powerful, everyone knows this is about his own personal racism and ax to grind about Deputy Davis getting shot by a fellow deputy in the 1990s…. just sayin

The biggest grows and water needs are the LEGAL permited grows. One acre is ridiculous, and it undermines the market. If it was a quarter of that, regular locals could make a living and it would be worth more.

It’s never been about the regular locals.

It’s about those who have the money to play the game.

Pay to play.

Same as it ever was

There is something way wrong with blowing up a piece of land, (legally or not) that does not have any water on it. Water deliveries is what you get when city folks buy land in the hills.

Really.

This is why we can’t have anything nice!

Stealing from firefighters? This isn’t acceptable!

Aiming lasers? That’s just rude…

And I have just been saying to, someone, those guys in Mendocino County, they just don’t have any manners!

Sheriff Kendall, we are going to need you to start doing your job, and quit whining about everything…

In Mendo, after all, they blame EVERYTHING on “The Cartel”, and everybody in Mendocino County is ALL fucked up, ALL the time!

I’m surprised Sheriff Kendall is not whining about the 13 year old who was jacked for his “pounds” and his Fifty G’s yesterday! “It’s not my fault, those damn Pirates…”

“Dirty Business Down In Cold Creek”, and business as usual on the pot farms of Covello, which may well be the most dangerous part of Northern CA…

Good luck, Sheriff, OH and if you can’t handle it, call the National Guard, or get Trump to call up Black Ops… [edit]

OH and how about THIS:

I can sum it all up by saying I agree whole heartedly with the majority of the posts here, there is one I disagree with 100% and that is Blocksburg. [edit]

Sorry to say this also in…….if they are illegal, likely they are large mega grows. The personnel associated with these type of grows are exactly the type to try and get Cal Fire to water their weed, and exactly the type of scum that steal fire fighting equipment.

I have given up on the grow scene of ever getting back to the way it was, it has been taken over by greedy, young punk scum that don’t give a shit about the community, environment, or anyone living in our once great land.

I hope all of these mega grows go up in smoke. Thanks Cheech!

It doesnt make sense. I dont believe growers would demand the use of a pump. Pumps are a dime a dozen. Now water…that is another thing. I agree this is horse pucky. What is happening is the chains of command are being told theyre on a budget with this calif fire and they are trying to keep to it best they can. So the fire managers arent making the decisions they might have been able to make in the past.

So if people were getting their water from a water truck before, doesn’t that mean they don’t have their own water on the property they are growing on (or can’t use it)? If they don’t have water on their property, why would they steal a pump? Perhaps this theft was done by a licensed grower, one that had water on their property, but chose to use water trucked in, because they were trying to be legal. When their legal water deliveries were stopped, they resorted to stealing a pump to illegally pump water to their garden. Except for the theft part, I understand them; everything they have is tied up in their garden, and since it is so valuable, they easily find reasons to believe they should do it. I think an outlaw gardener would be using illegal water, instead of paying for trucked water, and s/he would already have the pump in place. I suppose an illegal grower could truck in water, but they wouldn’t if they had a ready source of water available to them.

The Sheriff stated this theft happened on one occasion. He seems to be certain an illegal grower did it. The other day he is quoted as saying he wants to take a closer look at illegal gardens (for eradication). I think he is laying the groundwork to persuade people to turn against unlicensed growers. When we eradicate them, the licensed growers can continue to sell to the black market at higher prices. This whole situation has turned in to our counties becoming complacent in and violating RICO laws.

Legally growers may not truck in water. Only in an emergency situation that has rendered your regular approved water source unavailable and only temporarily .

Bullshit, every grow approved on Titlow trucks in water and is approved by the BOS. Sick shit how our politically backed growers get to do what they want while they raid a two-rack clone operation in Redway. Fuck Legal!!

Can’t fix the roads because the dopers vandalize the equipment

Can’t fight fires cause the dopers still the equipment

If you live down there, I’m sorry, it’s a real shithole, and you have no one to blame but yourself

And just in case you were wondering, nobody cares if your grow goes up in smoke.

Low life’s stealing a water pump that is for fighting the fires and keeping the neighborhood safe is not only LOW.. but also completely dumbfuckery..

I am certain that everyone in the neighborhood I preside in would be doing
everything they can to assist fire fighters, instead of hinder… with that said..

Let’s not forget that now a days Cal Fire has been placed in one of the 20 or so Agencies that now come up and assist on raiding grows. That is a mistake on the states part to turn Calfire into law enforcement. Maybe that has something to do with it.. either way.. it’s lowly to mess with fire fighters for fire protection..

Let’s talk about the fact that the corridor of the 101 that was closed was lined on both sides with toilet paper for hundreds of yards. How does that happen? Certainly not by accident. And why were there dozens of mysterious law enforcement agents in unmarked cars in Garberville?

They should just pay off CDF and have all the helicopters fighting the fire fill everyone’s water tanks so they can water there plants and just let the fire burn out all on it’s own . 👌👏😃

The illegal pot growing has gone completely insane here in Shasta county with the thieves stealing our creek water causing it to stop flowing…mind you these are creeks that run even during drought years and run strong. Cattle ranchers have had to move their cattle to Oregon because of the lack of water and threats from these thugs.

They have single-handedly wiped out our native trout and many other species along with causing other wildlife to struggle to survive. They have also killed off the local deer population using some kind of poison they are spraying on plants they feed on so they can save their illegal grows….

Now they are threatening firefighters? Disgusting….hope all of their garbage burns!

I understand the need to feed your family, but doing what they are doing is criminal and should be punishable…I understand that there are too many for the law to prosecute…so hopefully the wildfires do put some of these monsters out of business… and maybe the law can send helicopters to spray some roundup all over their illegal crops….
