From Arcata resident Thomas Bethune:

Letter to the EditorDear Editor,

I have a few comments about ballot MEASURE F in the upcoming election. The purpose of the measure is to provide full funding for the Arcata Fire District.

The name, Arcata Fire District, does not tell it all as the district covers the north bay area, including Manila, Bayside, Downtown Arcata, Fickle Hill, suburban Arcata, Valley West and McKinleyville. The district provides coverage from three strategically placed stations. Up until earlier this year those stations were staffed 24/7, but because of budget shortfall, there is only enough funding for two of the stations to be minimally staffed at any one time. In an attempt to provide coverage, the staffed stations rotate weekly, with each station closed every third week.

Here is an example of how I perceive that these closures could affect us. Take the Arcata Fire District’s McKinleyville station. It is centrally located in the middle of the business district. When staffed, the response time for emergency calls to residences, businesses, or even the airport, is rapid. Now, when a call comes in during the station’s closure, the response must come from either the Mad River, and/or downtown stations (if they are not on another call), increasing the response time.

The recent fire that occurred at Big Blue Restaurant on the Arcata Plaza is a good example of the importance of a timely response (the fire was stopped before it had a chance to spread to the rest of the block). Had the downtown station been closed, the response time would have been at least five minutes longer as the nearest response would come from Mad River. That delay may have been enough time for the fire to fully engulf the building, and could have destroyed a significant portion of downtown Arcata.

Measure F, if passed, will provide funding to fully staff the three stations. Furthermore, it will provide funding for much needed maintenance on the fire engines, training and, on a long-term basis, provide capital to replace aging equipment.

As we all can see, the fire danger is ever increasing. We need a fully staffed and equipped department of professional emergency personnel. Please join me in voting YES ON MEASURE F!

From Arcata resident Jeff Self:

Dear Community,

As raging wildfires and skyrocketing insurance rates become the norm

in California, we need to consider the importance of adequate fire protection for our communities.  Reinstating lost firefighter positions to keep all three Arcata/McKinleyville stations open is one way to improve local safety.   Make this happen by voting YES on Measure F.

From McKinleyville residents Beth and Marc Chaton:

Dear Community,

We have been residents of McKinleyville for over 35 years and it has always been a comfort to know that the fire station on Central Avenue was staffed by the Arcata Fire Department.  We cannot allow for the possibility of that station closing and our having to rely on medical or fire response from teams that are 3-4 times further away.  We need to support our first responders and our community by voting YES on Measure F.

Be the first. As far as I know HSU doesn’t have a fire department. Maybe it’s time they pay for the coverage.

Send me one. I haven’t gotten any to my knowledge (though my inbox is a mess after the last six weeks of non-stop news and I might have missed one.)

Yeah my post has been deleted and it wasn’t even speaking against it. I was just saying we passed measure 0 for the fire departments and the supervisors and sheriff’s department took it all. Gave themselves massive raises and started marching around the county robbing everyone on mostly made up environmental lies with massive illegal, unconstitutional aggregious fines.the people wanted more than 22% of it to go to fire departments!!!!

Focus your brain on election day !!!!

I would vote yes if employees of the fire dept are no longer allowed to work double shifts. This would have to be in the measure, which it is not so therefore vote NO on measure f.
We can’t just keep throwing money at the problem because the money is getting sucked up by salaries and double shifts=2x pay. Switch a shift with your buddy and each of you gets overtime and longer time off w your family, a win win for them, which is where the money is going.

ILoveplants: You say in your post the following: “I would vote yes if the employees of the fire Department are no longer allowed to work double shifts.”

I am glad to hear that! AFD is so understaffed and working overtime is a necessity to protect the residents in our District. The firefighters are exhausted and want time off. The Chief will have 4 days off for the entire month of September and he is working 24/7.

I agree with you! Firefighters shouldn’t have to work so much overtime. Their safety and the safety of those they serve can be compromised.

If you vote YES on Measure F, AFD will get back 8 firefighters and overtime will be reduced. Thank You 🙏

My thoughts on taxation are that I already pay enough taxes; 50% of everything I make, when all taxes, permits, fees, etc. are counted. I think the comment above about using measure O funds for firefighters is important to consider. Politician’s conning us in to voting more taxes, for a specific benefit, and then using that money for other uses is just plain wrong. Like when our previous governor urged us to approve a bond issue for 30 billion dollars to improve schools, then used the funds to pay down the state debt.

Happy last day of summer everyone. Hope you’re all ready for fall.

You are exactly right! Measure F funds are protected so no other agency has access to the funds. Thank You 🙏
