The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is bringing the Bear Cat and SWAT to a situation on Fischer Avenue off of School Road in McKinleyville after a man began holding a woman hostage this evening.

About 7:10 p.m., law enforcement began gathering in the area. Reportedly the male has been making suicide by cop statements and has barricaded himself and the hostage in a home “with an extensive amount of furniture,” according to a report over the scanner.

About 7:30 p.m., the dispatcher told officers that the “female was begging to leave.”

Neighbors are reporting getting a reverse 911 or texts saying, “[There is] Active Law Enforcement activity nearby. remain indoors and shelter in place. Stay clear of windows and doors. We will notify once there is an all clear.”

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available. We will be updating as more information comes in.

UPDATE 8:10 p.m.: The Sheriff’s Office is requesting that the CHP put up a road block at School Road and Hwy 101.

UPDATE 8:13 p.m.: Photos from Dean Troutte who says he can hear a loudspeaker from the apartment building in the first photo:

UPDATE 8:19 p.m.: The woman attempted to leave by the back door. The male prevented her from leaving.
UPDATE 8:21 p.m.: New photo from Dean Troutte:

UPDATE 8:32 p.m.: Lloyd Snyder, who is visiting a local resident, says the male let the female out through the front window and one of the SWAT team members is escorting her to a local market where more personnel are gathered. “The guy is hanging out the upstairs window right now saying to shoot him,” Snyder told us.

UPDATE 8:35 p.m.: Snyder tells us the man is throwing items out of the upstairs window.

The North Coast News live at the scene:

UPDATE 8:42 p.m.: According to Dean Troutte, the suspect is sticking his head out of the door and “telling cops he isn’t coming out…and making gun noises.”

UPDATE 10:18 p.m.: The suspect is still refusing to come out.

UPDATE 10:56 p.m.: A few minutes ago, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Twitter account tweeted, “@ 10:45 PM Suspect still barricaded inside residence. Crisis Negotiations Team still attempting contact.”

Send in the unarmed social workers!!!

Instead of arriving in the Bearcat they could arrive in a VW bus named the “Scaredycat”…

Given the circumstances, that is a particularly stupid and ignorant comment. If the man barricaded has voiced his intention to commit “suicide by cop”, an unarmed social worker with the proper training makes a lot more sense.

Patriot in Willits, that sounds great until the social worker is shot in the face. Go to the police academy, get hired, put in time then comment.

Greg Musson, I’m a little too old for a career change at this point, and I don’t think my not having a law enforcement background disqualifies me from having an opinion. Since you’ve served in that capacity, let me ask your opinion; is using the SWAT team always warranted in a hostage situation?
Deescalation seems to be critical to resolving it peacefully. If there’s no sign that the hostage-taker is armed, is an overwhelming display of force sometimes counterproductive?

Actually, while it doesn’t negate your opinion, would you as a layperson know that the swat team has access to many more less lethal options than any patrol officer does? Would you as a normal person know that the swat team has much more equipment to view the inside of the residence and a patrol officer wouldn’t, would you as a normal person know that activating the swat team actually lowers liability and lowers the risk of someone getting injured rather than a normal patrol officer?

Citizen Z- thank you, do make some good points. The ability to have a variety of responses is important, obviously. Also, thank you for making the assumption that I am “a normal person” In retrospect, I should not have called Pike Mortars comment stupid and ignorant. They were just attempting to be funny, I suspect, and keeping your senses of humor these days is important.

You realize that having universal Healthcare plus more mental health services free and available would help lessen these situations. Why bring this up? Because that’s something defunding would allow. Also, did you read the article? He made suicide by cops statements which means it is understood to him that they take the law into their own hands and murder whenever.

Slade Wilson so our righteous assumption would be then, that when someone points a gun in your face, or steals your car, you won’t call the police and disturb them with your “problems??” But you’ll be fine until the Social Worker gets there!!??

Unfortunately, free health care and free mental health care don’t really come in to play. Yes it would be nice, however with the existing laws, it is extremely difficult to get help for a mental patient as they have to ask for it themselves, and often are unaware that they even need the help. Take it from experience, even when our family member went to Semper Virens voluntarily to register as a mental patient after a stay at an out of county mental hospital, they were turned away and we were told it is not uncommon for someone to hear voices. It took six years of dealing with an unmedicated individual that was paranoid and having hallucinations, continued deterioration even was a danger to herself and others (the requirement for forced care) and still no help. It wasn’t until she obtained a 22 pistol and shot at her husband that she ended up in jail only go be let go with probation and still remains unmedicated. So no universal healthcare is not the only answer to mental health, laws need to be changed. Humboldt County mental health system is no different than our current revolving door system at the county jail.

I’m not sure I hey can squeeze a VW Bus into the budget what with the cost of that BearCat in addition to all the overtime this is gonna compound.. Sriously though, I watched the first 2 minutes of that newscast just up to when they called for backup and then I just thought are they for real they have like 10 cops and a bearcat already. It’s one guy armed with an unconfirmed pickaxe and some pots and pans… Backup?
They don need no stinking backup!..
And for real, are you mining for gold or taking a hostage. I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a pickaxe.. maybe there should be a background check and a waiting period for pickaxes…
Although, I think I’ve heard it said, “never bring a pickaxe to a suicide by cop gunfight”

So if I hold you hostage you dont think LE should be prepared for the worst case scenario? They shouldn’t use their best efforts because your life isn’t worth it? Tell that to the hostage and get her perspective. Your ignorance is showing.

I remember sewage running down both sides of Central Avenue in the 1970s. Mckinleyville was a mean-spirited little town with a lot of slumlords renting below-standard housing to students they openly despised.

Mountain Man, clearly, nothing in my comment suggests that I am volunteering or volunteering someone else. What I am suggesting is that an overwhelming show of force by the police when they are dealing with someone who says they want to die by “suicide by cop”is a needless escalation of the situation.
Also, nothing in the reporting suggests that he is even armed. No weapon being brandished, and he only makes “gun noises”. I’m sure the McKinleyville police have competent negotiators., which is what the circumstances call for. The SWAT team and an armored vehicle isn’t.

I’m against the cops stopping people from committing suicide by killing them instead. But the moment you take a hostage, even if you let them go later, and say you have a gun you get SWAT, thinking that you don’t is idiotic. It’s cause and effect. That’s literally the reason why they have SWAT in the first place. If the police held back and the negotiations failed and someone, or a couple people got killed you’d be on here saying how they dropped the ball and should be held liable.

What society needs to realize is that life is about calculated risk. If I want to eat a gas station tuna sandwich I’m taking a calculated risk of crapped my pants. If I want to run a red light I take a calculated risk of getting hit by another car. If I want to put my hand on a hot stove, I’m taking a calculated risk that I’m probably going to get burned. So if you threaten a police officer, or attempt to harm or resist a police officer, you’re taking a calculated risk that force will be used upon you. Most people can’t handle the fact there’s consequences for your actions in the real world. You can’t always hide behind a keyboard and say whatever you want.

Dis true!

Actions have consequences. Lately it’s become the trend to only discuss the consequences and lambast the police; when in fact the correct thing to do is to discuss the actions that led up to the consequences. In all but maybe two notable exceptions, the consequencee was actively breaking the law and had a history of criminal conduct.

These naysayers are hanging their hat on shitbags. None of these recent cases have been Rosa Parks at the back of the bus.
