Mendocino County Gets Nearly $10,000,000 to Help With Housing for the Homeless

House housing keyPress release from Mendocino County:

Governor Gavin Newsom yesterday announced Mendocino County received $9,669,500 in the first round of awards for Homekey, California’s innovative $600 million program to purchase and rehabilitate housing, including hotels, motels, vacant apartment buildings and other properties, and convert them into permanent, long-term housing for people experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness.

The County is in negotiations to purchase a motel on Orchard Ave. in Ukiah, California. Following purchase, the County intends to utilize the motel to provide transitional housing for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. All rooms will remain in their initial configuration as studio-style units. While the initial purpose of the facility will be transitional housing, the County plans to upgrade at least 50% of the facility into permanent housing within ten years of acquisition. Overall, the County aspires to offer rooms for a variety of populations at risk of or experiencing homelessness such as persons experiencing severe mental illness, veterans, seniors, CalWorks eligible families, families involved in Child Welfare Services, people with complex medical conditions, and people with permanent supportive housing vouchers. Approximately eight rooms will be set aside as “flex” rooms, able to serve the target populations listed above, or others in need such as victims of domestic violence, Adult Protective Services clients, and others.

This grant award would not be possible without the support, expertise and collaboration of the City of Ukiah, Mendocino County Homeless Services Continuum of Care, Rural Communities Housing Development Corporation (RCHDC) and LACO Associates.

Commenting on the award, Board of Supervisors Chair John Haschack stated, “I am very excited that Mendocino County has received the Homekey award of $9.6 million. This will allow us to purchase needed housing facilities for our vulnerable residents that are homeless, veterans, CalWorks recipients, seniors and people suffering from mental illness. Our people as well as our communities will benefit from this project.”

“Senator McGuire and Assemblyman Wood continue to be Mendocino County’s biggest champions. $9.6M in Project Homekey funding is a tremendous victory for our rural community. This investment in Mendocino County will positively impact hundreds of lives and we look forward to working with our local and state partners to mitigate this housing crisis in our community,” stated Mendocino County Chief Executive Officer Carmel Angelo.

Governor Newsom announced Homekey in June, and in July made $600 million in funding available. Of that, $550 million will provided to cities and counties by California’s direct allocation of the federal Coronavirus Aid Relief Funds, with an additional $50 million provided by the state to supplement the acquisition and provide initial operating funds. Awards will be announced on a weekly basis through October 2020. To learn more about the Homekey funded projects, please visit bcsh.ca.gov/homekey.

This is why We just placed our home up for
Sale. Purchased a year ago in town and have watched this city become more and more less attractive. At times I think wow…. Homeless is one thing however these people are combative, aggressive, and dangerous.

The south end of state street is a shit hole and ghetto looking. Congratulations Ukiah. Downtown is a disaster and I feel for
All the small businesses. Who had this brainstorm. Wow

Lack of restaurants, homeless taking over the streets. Actually it is the Oregon Coast here we come.

Being a native San Franciscan it makes me sick to see what the city has now become and what this state is becoming.

The large amounts of homeless are only in some places. Tons of homeless in Ukiah, Eureka, Clearlake, Rosa… A lot of cities/counties just give them a ride to somewhere else so they’re not their problem.

Google “Clearlake, Ca Gobi desert”. It’s like Mexico

Fun fact: you get about 200 bucks a month on ebt if you make less than a certain amount. You can buy a lot of food at, say, grocery outlet for that much. This means if you’re panhandling, you pretty much just need money for alcohol, drugs, and dog food 👍🏼

I agree with Taco 36… I am ashamed to say I worked for 42 years, and I now wish I had become a school teacher or a Deputy Sheriff, because the PERS/SIRS pensions pay over twice what Social Security pays, and I would have been better off…

San Francisco spends over $100,000 per homeless person per year. I never made over $100,000, except twice, in 2010, and in 2015. I feel ashamed to have gone to high school, university, and then to work… I feel like a fool!

The $10,000,000 will be straight wasted, at least the part which is not stolen or misused in Mendocino County… I am surprised there is any space at all for housing homeless, as every old Motel in Ukiah is currently in use as permanent homes for working people. I imagine that any Motel available there will need extensive remodrl to be ADA Compliant, and then the buildings will be pretty much destroyed while being used this way!

We have become a society which throws away our resources, a society which does not value working persons, and a society where the government will end up employing an ever increasing percentage of the citizens, since they will be needed to administer all the broken and bleeding services that our incompetent and corrupt leaders dream up to spend our taxes, in the state where the roads are crumbling, and the hospitals falling down…

Maybe we should all just go for it, be homeless too! WTF!

As of this year the top 20% of Americans enjoy 52% of the total income in this country. We have the highest income inequality of any of the G7 nations. I think a little more redistribution would be helpful.

You should be homeless and see you won’t be getting 100,000 $. Duh ….. it goes to places and programs to help
Homeless they don’t just get it because there is money for places that help the homeless . So maybe work for a homeless shelter and they may get the money but actual homeless people laying fin the sidewalks don’t !

Really, oh, I thought the bums got a paycheck… Darn!

So, being homeless, it’s not, like, a job?

Hmmmmm, sorry, I guess I just didn’t understand the concept!

Never mind…

I work hard to have a home. It is not impossible for 99.8 percent of the population. To claim the problems all lie with that 99.8 percent and none lies with the 0.2 percent who screwed up is not useful, considering how much effort is already spent on that 0.2 percent.

The homeless never touch one penny , or have a say, of that taxpayer homeless funding. By the time the money is funneled through all the Poverty Pimps all the homeless get is a filthy 8-hour floor mat in a church basement, and scoops of rotten/discarded food bank bean slurry over rice.

Oh crap that is such a fine concept. Much needed, yes housing is needed.
Hope they inspect the hell out of that cockroach palace prior to signing the contract. They just bought a crumbling facility on Whitemore lane too. Question LUMPING all these populations together is a good idea how? Poverty is hard enough for a young child or family to endure. Then lets have them share a wall with the person struggling with mental health challenges. Cops in and out 24/7. 10 million dollars to build Sodom and Gammorah.
Have fun with that one.
Damn!

There seems to be so many lies about homelessness in comments here.

Comments about people who are homeless free loading off of social security and now grant money from the state of California. Looks like all the education articles about people who are low income including some of the people who are recipients of SSI and social security being priced out of monthly rents did not soak in and become useful knowledge for many.
The average SSI check in California us approximately $900 a month, how many rentals go for that? There should be more rewards to landlords to offer places /cabins for $300 and $400 a month. Either that or raise the monthly SSI check to $5000 a month.

The hateful blaming is part of the reason there’s so many people who are homeless in California. And the hateful judgement they recieve if they drink a beer or anything like the people who aren’t homeless do.

What the world needs now is love sweet love and more affordable housing real affordability not the fake kind of 1500 a month is affordable because 1500 for someone recieving SSI is not affordable.

Yes, it only makes sense to give people who don’t work significantly more than many hardworking people earn. We really need to be fair about things. Sometimes people who aren’t addicts don’t know how expensive it can be to feed a habit. We should give bums with multiple addictions extra bonus money because they have a greater need.

None of the critics of these social programs seem to mind that half of all tax money goes to a bloated military machine that is, for a large part, an unnecessary boondoggle.

Thank you for sharing the truth
I’m neither an addict or a bum
But I do collect Disability at $900. A month . And do not qualify for even food stamps
And only recently became homeless due to greed.
And I was in the hospital not knowing what was being done to me !
And I put in my fair share of work for a living !
But can’t do much after being hit by a car while I was in a cross walk !
I appreciate you for having the guts to stand up for TRUTH !!

Hey All you complaining that homeless people (disabled, mental disorders, trauma war victims, etc)… should not even deserve basic human rights ? What is wrong with you?
It’s overpopulated here. Earth can’t breath so climate change is happening. No amount of money or police or homeless hotels is going to change the obvious fact that Mother Earth is cleansing and will survive all this crap…
Sad coz humans kill off humans,..
in the end, earth will prevail Bless this planet, be grateful you lived and experienced this remarkable strong beautiful earth.
Stop complaining who did what while you do nothing to preserve life while we are still able to breath.
Stop breeding for bit. Teach tolerance and diverisity to those who have no idea how many mixed races started this USA
everyone has many races in their dna. that’s why everyone looks different. We are not robots or clones.
Each person is individual that is irreplaceable and that should be honored not ridiculed.
Endangered as each one of us is. Human nature is the most noble thing humans have
Integrity holds us here … together.

Stay well and be an example not a weapon.

You people don’t have a fucking clue on what is going on. You see I was homeless not that long ago. Not due to mental health. Not due to drugs. Not due to domestic violence. Not due anything but to the fact that I just wanted to help. So how can someone understand what needs to change unless they have gone through what these people are going through. I just moved back to ukiah yes me the big bad Gary Robert Villa . I have been staying in Cloverdale. And I would like to point out some really good facts. 1 when you were a child or an adult and you placed your hand over your heart and you took a pledge of allegiance to the United States it says one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all therefore do you think God judges people you should be ashamed of yourself forever taking a pledge of allegiance using the word god and justice for all. I look at all these churches who supposedly preach the word of God God hung out with homeless people with a rejects the outcasts the leopards people who needed help and you people lock the doors on your churches they my opinion should be burnt down for their not God’s place. Why I was in Cloverdale it’s funny because people would talk about the homeless people about their community I did 5,287 hours of community service while staying there and I can say that I’d never see anybody out there except for outreach workers River cleanup and Sean bovey actually trying to clean up their community. Since I’ve been back I visited homeless encampments and I see the same thing here as it was there. Do you know what it’s like to live in the United States the most powerful country in the world and have nowhere to go to the bathroom or live in the most powerful country in the world and can’t get a drink of water. All these stores all these restaurants they waste food throw it away break products open pour it out and dumpsters I want you to think about this how can you do that to people knowing that they can use that resource that you’re going to throw it away anyways. I plan to help the homeless here to show them that they don’t have to be a negative condition on society but have you ever took in the time to understand how important homeless people are of course not because you are simple-minded you are the same people who go around with bed sheets over your head threatening to kill n****** yes that is your mentality that is how ignorant you are. When this world goes to s*** or this country eventually it will happen and when it does and when the government doesn’t help you who do you think is the only person who’s going to understand your struggle and know how to survive who do you think has been exposed to more diseases and bacteria and yet are still healthier than you will ever be once put into their position you might want to open your eyes to see how important these people are they condition themselves the struggle to go through life and all you do is put them down when the government falls when we have a civil war when all your SSI money your 401k and US currency is basically as good as a paper you wipe your ass with we’ll see who is there for you when you are in their position and if you think that’s not possible and that it won’t happen like I said you’re ignorant history repeats itself. To the people who want to talk about their community and yet don’t do a damn thing about it as in get off your fat lazy asses go outside maybe communicate with these homeless people maybe quit putting them down maybe reward them for what they do right not only look at them for what they do wrong maybe if you give some of them some kind of self-worth or self-esteem maybe you’ll see the change because I know what’s wrong with the whole picture not just the homeless people but the people who sit there and point fingers and say that they care about the community but don’t do anything about it. And for the people that like to go and victimize homeless people I got your number and I don’t care I will get you one way or another you can look at my history you know I have no problem going into somebody’s house and getting somebody so if you think that you can hide behind your self-defense to your home or whatever you try to claim why victimizing homeless people be careful when you judge somebody cuz it could be very easily done to you and for you people who only going to sit here and read this and think about how I misspelled something or something isn’t written right that just goes how stupid and simple minded you were because you’re missing the whole point. So yes big bad Gary Robert Villa is going to be cleaning up my hometown and once I’ve done more than anybody else has done and in one month period then you’ve done and a 20-year lifetime here I don’t want to hear your opinion your opinion means nothing because unless you out there on the streets trying to help your community trying to clean up the garbage trying to help people show them a different way than you keep your mouth shut sit on that finger. Oh yeah one more thing you guys talk about money for homeless people we already know whose pocket that’s going to go do let me point out something you people might not know and point arena there is a retired military base AKA abandoned with 28 homes vacant and you know who uses that property so they can play their little b******* games and be corrupt Mendocino county sheriff’s office so they act like they don’t have resources when they have a whole military base there that they could use to house homeless people that wouldn’t be in the city limits that wouldn’t be a problem and it’s free because it’s abandoned maybe I’ll take some of the homeless people there let’s see how this see how good this community is by supporting the transition to be placed there or to be welcomed there the homeless people. I bet you they’d rather spend taxpayers money so they could put that money in their own pockets for their own toys and equipment rather than step out of the way and let somebody take over that property which they used to play their grab-ass games

Judge not lest you be judged. I can not believe all the judgemental, narcissist Assholes, in this world today. If you have never been homeless or had to worry where you were going to get your next meal or if you would be somewhere safe to lay your head down and sleep at night then not a single one of you have any right to judge another Human Being expectally if you have never been there. I bet not a single one of you judgemental pieces of shit have once stopped to think I wonder what happens to cause this person or that person to be in this situation. Just over probably 50% of the people (YES PEOPLE NOT BUMS) that are homeless are veterans, that’s right warriors, soldiers who some willingly And some against their own will, sacrificed their freedom and lives so that this shit hole of a country could continue to live free and still be able to be here to be have this stupid conversation. So before you judge some one and call them a bum maybe you should think about the only reasons this country even still has all the freedom that it does, because with out so many of those Homeless Bums that faught for our freedom we would be controlled like many of the other countries. Instead we have our independence
