Covelo Man Arrested With an Ar-9 Assault Rifle Hidden Under a Blanket, According to the MCSO

AR-9 assault weapon

The Mendocino County Sheriff said this “AR-9 assault weapon” was found in the vehicle of the suspect.

This is a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

Recently the Round Valley Indian Tribes have requested assistance from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office in focusing on crime prevention on and around the Tribal lands.

This includes illegal cultivation of marijuana, sales of other drugs, sales of firearms and environmental degradation.

Over the past few months there has been a spike in violence in and around the community of Covelo and law enforcement has seized a number of firearms while performing focused enforcement efforts in and around Covelo.

On 08-25-2020, at approximately 8:24 PM, a Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputy made a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign on Howard Street, where it intersects with Airport Road in Covelo.

During the traffic stop, the Deputy saw what he believed to be a handgun on the passenger side floorboard.

Upon seeing this, both the driver and passenger were removed from the vehicle and the handgun was found to be a plastic replica firearm.

However, when the Deputy was inspecting the replica handgun, he observed what he recognized as the muzzle of a rifle sticking out from underneath a sweater in the rear passenger area of the vehicle. The Deputy removed the sweater and discovered the rifle in question was in fact a loaded assault weapon shortened down to pistol form.

Under California law the weapon was clearly found to be illegal to possess as it is defined by its nature as an assault weapon.

The Deputy determined the driver, Jesse Gurrola, [a 25 year-old male from Covelo] was the owner of the firearm.

The passenger was released, and Gurrola was arrested.  He was subsequently booked into the Mendocino County Jail on charges of 30605(a) PC and 25850(c)(6) PC.

Due to the Judicial Counsel COVID-19 Emergency Declaration, Gurrola was to be released on zero bail at the conclusion of the jail booking process.

Over the past several months, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office has seized numerous weapons in and around the Covelo area.

Several of these weapons were high powered assault style weapons which are believe to have been brought into the community and sold illegally in furtherance of criminal organizations involved in the drug trade.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office will continue focused enforcement efforts on these types of cases and will request prosecution from the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office and at times the Office of the United States Attorney General.

This is not a rifle, it is a pistol. It has no stock and uses a 9mm pistol round. It is a pop gun compared to an AR-15 platform configured in .556 or .308 rifle caliber. It is not a shortened down rifle, it is a purpose built pistol, according to Kalifornia law.

Spot on, but I’d just add that the legal definition could hinge on of the lower receiver. If it was originally sold as a “rifle” then it remains a rifle even if dressed with a short barrel and no stock. However, if the lower came into life as a pistol then that looks like a perfectly legal firearm.

Now, if this was created from an 80% receiver blank and the person who “manufactured” the firearm didn’t follow the right procedure (by their own admission), like first making it a single-shot pistol THEN a semi-automatic, then they could also end up being in trouble. In any case, there’s no way the arresting officer can have any clue which of these situations applies unless the guy admitted it on the spot.

More info here:

https://www.calguns.net/caawid/hgflowchart.pdf

https://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf

Disclaimer – I’m not a lawyer so don’t take this as legal advice. If you aren’t familiar with CA firearms laws and think this sounds pedantic and absurdly convoluted, there are many that would agree with you. If you think cops all understand the actual law and enforce them correctly, I would say don’t bet on it.

Regardless, whether the AW charge sticks there’s still carrying in a vehicle.

Spot on, it would also need a mag locking device so the action needs to be disassembled (opened) to drop the mag. I’m wondered if it’s a finished 80% reciever, i don’t see markings on the visible side but it may be marked on the other side of course. And it’s not kosher with the man to have a loaded, concealed pistol in your vehicle unless it’s listed on your CCW.

Or the lower could have been legally bought as just a lower, with no rifle or pistol designation.

Actually no, it is either a rifle or a pistol on the DROS. There is no such thing as ‘just a lower’. If you go the 80 route you can decide for yourself, but the path is tricky.

ATF form 4473 it is clearly stated as a Handgun, rifle and other. So, yes it can be done as just a receiver.

Those people he killed in Kenosha were all convicted felons who were approaching him with ill intent to do bodily harm. They deserved every bullet they got. I’m not advocating for anyone’s murder. I’m advocating for self defense of ones self against these insane lunatics who claim to be peaceful protesters.

A minor drives a half-hour to walk around Kenosha with a loaded AR-15 for no apparent reason after curfew and to purposely put himself in the middle of a highly emotional protest and when gunshots go off and people appear to try to disarm him, for whatever reason, that’s “obvious self-defense”?

My obvious question is, what the fuck were his parents doing letting him have an AR-15 and drive up to a protest in Kenosha? He certainly didn’t buy it himself legally at age 17.

The kid joined a citizen’s group protecting a used car dealership from arson after volunteering to clean up graffitti during the day. Arson was later attempted on cars in the lot. He only used the gun when he was being assaulted, which you euphemistically refer to as “trying to disarm him.” Also, the guy who was wounded but not killed had a gun drawn and later admitted that he wanted to kill the kid. But the kid shot him first, saving his own life. They guy with the handgun has a criminal that prevents him from legally owning a firearm.

The guy with the handgun should also be fully charged, there’s no excuse for being armed at a peaceful protest except to intimidate or injure someone else. And if he’s a felon with a weapon, lock him up. But the two people who were killed were unarmed as far as I could tell from the news reports, although one was apparently carrying a skateboard.

The “citizen’s group”, was that the militia that had advertised on Facebook for folks to go armed to Kenosha to cause some damage to the protesters? You know, the one Zuckerberg just admitted that Facebook failed to block because they were promoting violence.

I might don’t think you can use the term peaceful protest with regard to this incident. I’m sure there were peaceful protests but not in regard to the shooting that took place, the instigators on either side, depending on what your outlook is could not be considered peaceful. From every bit of footage I’ve seen the protestors or rioters instigated and escalated the situation that led to the shooting, that alone does not justify the shooting but it’s relevant to the narrative that they were peaceful protestors. The second and third “victims” were absolutely self defense, as long as the first “victim” shooting was justified, the footage I’ve seen leads towards that it was but it’s not definitive. Either way if you play stupid games you win stupid prizes, a crowd chasing a teenager armed with a gun throwing things at him, cornering him and charging him is playing a very, very stupid game if your interest is self survival.

So if someone chases you while screaming “get him he just shot someone get him” then tries to/ does physically assault you with a object being used as a weapon with multiple other people chasing you or trying to corner you and also trying to take your means of defense your just going to give them your gun. Why so they can use it against you he was there to help by providing medical assistance in a red zone meaning no ambulance was going to come help those rioters he would have and may have he tryed to apply first aid to the first victim until he started being chased he called 911 immediately after he was trying to retreat to a police line when he fell and had no option buy fight or die. By the admittance of gaige they felon with a glock he would have killed the kid and while in the hospital said it was his only regret that he did not empty the mag into him. This case is clear self defense.

I disagree, Mark. There are still state laws you have to follow. In his case in both states it was not legal for him to be open carrying a long firearm being under 17, he wasnt defending his property, and there was a “gun free zone”, a school, that he may have been in. He intentionally travelled and put himself into a dangerous situation armed with a semi automatic firearm. Wisconsin law (as with many other states) has a rule covering being the instigator or committing a crime and self defense. If he was in his home town outside his own home with a legally owned firearm it may be different, but travelling to a site of unrest then arming up shows intent.

Watch my video above. He’s a lawyer, if that lends credibility. Regardless of the legal status of the firearm, the right to self-defense supercedes the possession of the means to self-defense.

Allow me to enlighten you. Let’s examine a very germane component of “murder”. That’s, of course, INTENT. What was the intent of Mr. Rittenhouse in moments prior to this incident? Based on the available videos he was walking away from the mayhem, attempting to leave the area. What was the intent of the two who were shot? They attacked him from behind after chasing him down (think cowards), and one beat him with a skateboard and the other “gentleman” pulled a gun. Mr. Rittenhouse was well within his 2nd amendment right to be armed whilst the man with the pistol was not (felon). The “gentleman” who was killed was attempting to take the rifle from Mr. Rittenhouse by force with the barrel pointed at his chest (not very bright). Clearly a case of self defense, and the jury will agree. When you play big boy games you better be ready for big boy consequences.

The Mob doesn’t care about facts, or investigations. They are emotionally controlled by The Narrative….pure anger in motion. The Fact that Mr. Rittenhouse was acting in self defense against a violent mob means nothing to a mob of angry, ignorant people who view themselves as peaceful protestors. The Fact is, it’s all in video, and truth will triump over the false narrative pushed on the MSM. Self defense is a human right, you are never obligated to become a victim, never. Self defence is not racist, no matter what the Narrative Pushers tell you. Get up, Stand up.

Another state lol. His house is 20 minutes away. The “mostly peaceful” protesters are predominantly white people from Chicago. I’m for protesting police violence, but descending on another person’s town and burning down small businesses is complete bullshit. Telling the police to stand down when the riots start is complete bullshit. This crap is going to get trump re-elected. This is another manufactured color revolution designed to divide and conquer the populace, hijacking a very real issue. Part of disaster capitalism’s great reset, fueled by elite funded ngo’s and social media manipulation. Just like in every country where we are ostensibly spreading democracy. New York Times analysis of the video all but concluded he was acting in self defense. Should he have been walking around in a violent, armed crowd with a rifle? Probably not, but when a town near you is getting trashed, and law enforcement is told to stand down I can see why citizens take matters into their own hands. Same thing in the Santa Cruz mountains, if cops and firefighters and other public employees can’t or won’t do their job, we have to step in and defend our communities. Most LEOs and firefighters are good people, but they need funding and leadership to carry out their service. The governors of the states where these riots are happening obviously have a political agenda, and it is not going to help the issue of police violence against Black bodies, and general institutional predation on the lower class, at all. This is designed to destabilize. Problem, reaction, solution. Order out of chaos.

So you expect no criticism? I think you’re in the wrong profession for that. Ofcourse I complain here because it is the only- the only- place where media tolerates any critcism of itself at all. And that barely. Yet the press (in general- it’s not always personal) is distinctly responsible for the vituperation involved in most of the current conflicts. People naturally be heated over many things but until recently there has been little tolerance for acting out on it. Cheerleading violence is only slightly less repugnant than doing violence.

We? I do not chose to be “we” with someone who can’t tolerate even a bit of heat. The above was as low a personal comment as your first “lack of empathy” insult. I could go as low but please note that I think personal attacks are damaging to the attacker. It’s that I’m better than that, not that you are fairly to using your position.

It’s your perspective that I am one sided but that means you judge by side- you see yourself apparently as just on the other side. No, what I admit ticks me off most is not what side a person is on, because I’m not a believer in sides as much as you, but in refusing to see that they are not on a side at all. Or only that there is only one right side. I think people are pretty much similar- a mixture of mean and kind, tolerant and intolerant, obtuse and acute. And unfortunately stupid and clever. Pride in side is pretty much on the lowest form of thinking. I’m sure there’s a more precise word but I don’t want examine the idea further now.

What I want, as if it matters to much of anyone, is that the public press take less pride in being on the right side and more on being on the side of not sacrificing the professional journalism value of being a trust worthy source of information to being on the right side. Just like any professional in any field needs to try to seperate ego from duty. Just so they don’t become so distrusted that their customers- clients? Readers?- believe just the opposite of what is they say as a matter of course. How damaging has that becme in a crisis is seen by the snowballing public violence THAT DIDN’T NEED TO EXIST except for the press.

BRM, actually it’s beyond “comical”, it’s hilarious. They just can’t figure out why such burning issues like “which bathroom should I use”, boys are girls and girls are boys, or there’s racism in that sunset doesn’t resonate with voters. But on a brighter note I hear they’re changing their name to the I’m Trying to Think and Nothing is Happening Party.

Yep. Agreed my friend. There’s only two genders and only ONE America.

SSDD. Let’s be humans, and act that way. An eye for an eye, an ear for an ear. We can harm each other and it’s no big deal.
Hee haw buckle up buttercup there is a long way to go to Tipperary!
Driving a 3 wheeled car packed with kids, all the windows bashed out. Spray can paint job, brake lights duck taped in. Might spend 6 months on the road, sleeping in the casino lot , back seat of the car. Get there just in time as the engine explodes!!! The whole time it was only going 3 miles down the road.

I always get the last word it seems. Odd considering the spewing vitriol. It must be some sort of censorship and reward at the same time ha. I’d reckon that an online forum would be edited to a certain degree but I know well enough that what I’m saying is not what I’d call a mike drop just opinion that perhaps rings so true it hurts. My bad your bad try to get better that’s the point of this blip of existence we have. I appreciate the forum but I see it absolutely is biased. [edit] Or jump on board the weak ass braying and leafing through the thesaurus to appear well spoken. Ridiculous diatribe like monkeys writing the great American novel. It’s boring out here so this is kinda entertaining but boy o boy y’all must be really bored and captaining a very leaky boat….the SS Karen. I wonder what the male version of that is? I’m guessing Kevin but that’s one of my goats name so I feel bad. Mike yeah Mike that’s good.

Nope not at all maybe look up the word or even the concept of fact/factual. Pretty simple and that’s an absolute truism

Lol, I want a tv show where flat earthers are given all the equipment they need and we watch them try to find the edge of the earth. I think it would be a great time.

We have entered the Post-truth Era! Facts are bullshit. It’s feelings that really matter.

You can’t make this shit up.

Go to #FightBackFoundation To donate towards Kyle Rittenhouse legal defense. The lawyers representing him are some of the same ones who were used to just recently sue CNN for the Covington school kid dealio fiasco

Whats wrong with California is this…its run by Greedy punks that dont care about any race..they crave control and power..they use the media (which by now we all know is a weapon of hate) to stir the pot and keep the narrative in their favor..i hate what this state has become….but i love that Ar 9 and ill buy it if it for sale!!!!!

Since this article is so fraught with ignorance about firearms I’ll skip the pistol/rifle/assault weapon debate and go to the only thing that should matter… Did this individual have a right to bear arms in the first place… Was he a felon or in the process of committing a criminal act? Did he have a permit to conceal the weapon? He obviously broke the law by not making the officer aware of the weapon when he was pulled over. My only concern is was a right unlawfully infringed on or was this guy a criminal (apart from California’s unconstitutional firearms laws)
