Two Gunshot Victims in Covelo Earlier Today; MCSO Investigating the Circumstances

Sheriff Kendall described first responders finding two men suffering gunshot wounds, one man shot in the leg and one shot in the upper leg/hip. Both victims received medical care and were taken away in an ambulance.
The victims said they were unclear as to how the firearms came to be discharged and were not cooperating with law enforcement’s investigation of the incident, according to Sheriff Kendall. MCSO remains on-site investigating the scene to determine the circumstances the firearms came to be discharged.

Any discussion of the rate of unemployment must factor that once you are unemployed for a certain amount of time, you are no longer counted as unemployed. The bottom line is they were massacred There’s no denying that. Documented so by the U.S. Government. I’m not sure what would be the lie. Lynwood Carranco, one of the authors, was a much respected professor at College of the Redwoods. It takes little imagination to imagine the atrocities that happened during that time. And in today’s times the government thinks more of an arrowhead (which can shut down your business) than it does the natives stuffed on a reservations.
There’s another book titles When the Great Spirit died by William B. Secrest. A reporter from the San Francisco Examiner in early 1899 obtained an interview with Jackson Farley, a pioneer rancher who had settled in Mendocino County in 1857. Farley pointed out the dozens of Indian scalps decorating the walls of his cabin. The reporter duly noted the fact that Farley recited his tales while sitting in his “Indian hide bottomed chair.”

I think Mike is referring to Frank Asbill’s Last of the West which was heavily, yet discerningly, used in Genocide and Vendetta. Asbill went to long-time local Nona James and asked her for backing to publish his book and she responded with something similar to what Mike’s source said. His veracity on some points was so suspect, the Mendocino Historical society in Ukiah was advised not to publish his manuscript. It is an amazing cultural document. One of his relatives came onto Ernie’s blog and made the claim that he really tried to get the story right, and I actually do give him credit for the information he recalled from lifetime, and that era is mostly what Carranco and Beard used.–if I am wrong, let me know Mike.

hearing a story of people in covelo having a book burning for the book. No one likes having their family name attached to a genocide, especially if it’s innaccurate. I know a man who published a follow up book on his family’s legacy in this county all the way up til 20 or so years ago. His family has been here long enough it’s in some of the old books, so I guess he thought it would be interesting to to a sequel. Now there is nothing really controversial in it, and to the 10 people, I assume, who bought it it’ll be at some point a recorded part of humboldt county’s history, be it a small chunk. The funny thing is that I know some of his family I’m this era and at least half of it is completely and utter BS. Kinda makes you wonder when you read other things.
Guest- that is definitely a book worth owning, although I don’t want to know how much you paid for it. I was able to borrow the copy that Willits High School keeps in a file cabinet in the textbook room. Another book on the topic which I would recommend is Killing for Land in Early California by Frank Baumgardner. My wife and I attended a reading by him at the Mendocino Book Company when he published it 15 years ago or thereabouts.
I had read the book from a friend and then thought I needed to buy it for my friends to read, some who are native. I found a deal on Ebay for $300. On Amazon it’s from $500 to $1200. Ironically my family on both sides were some of the earliest settlers in Humboldt County. Of course I didn’t hear any war stories but I did find out that my 3rd great grandfather had 2 or 3 native “slaves.” I really don’t like writing this at all and feel tinges of guilt. I actually have tears in my eyes. Thank you all for the input.

Another interesting book, although not local history; The Willits library has a printed copy of John Smith’s diaries and some letters. Very very interesting for history buffs. Rare book, you can’t take it out- it’s locked up and you have to make an appointment to go read it in the library. It’s in old English and takes some time to read.
John Smith was a chronic liar and sociopath who plundered Native villages for food stores from the south to Nova Scotia to keep the first English settlements alive. Then burned the villages. He had justifications for everything and hated the settlers as well.

Summer 2020 has felt like a pressure cooker in Round Valley.
The population here has doubled in 2 years. The “cartel grows” are everywhere and inescapably in your face everyday.
Garbage is piling up at peoples homes and on the roads and in the ditches because Jerry Ward and his company Willits Solid Waste are not fulfilling their contract with the County. The modest official hours are Wednesday through Saturday 9am-3pm. Cars start lining up at 8:30am and there are usually 20 or more waiting by 9am. The dumpsters are usually full before noon and the transfer station will close the gates and turn people away who have been waiting In line.
Our Supervisor John Haschak was interviewed on the local radio station and parroted the WSW company line that blamed Covelo for “generating too much garbage” (!!!). People become discouraged by this and either allow their garbage to pile up at home or dump it on the side of the road or at one of the many unofficial dumps. Either way it is a public health and safety issue of urgent importance.
Then there are the ongoing arson fires that have been plaguing downtown Covelo for the last few years. The fire last month destroyed the Northfork Cafe and Covelo Western Auto. The Northfork was our “sit down” restaurant and music venue. Covelo Western Auto was the town’s sole tire repair shop.
Although 2020 has been a challenging year for people everywhere, it is especially brutal here in Covelo.
I’m disappointed to hear that Haschak is rubberstamping Jerry Ward’s excuse. I voted for him, and I think he’s generally an improvement over Pinches, but I feel sometimes that he is mostly concerned with the “nice people” and their agenda.
Covelo is having an outbreak of Glock 19.

Actually I’ve been to many Supervisors , City Council, Planning meetings etc. and public input almost never makes a difference. They are the epitome of wasted time.
