A County Wide “Wear a Mask” Campaign Is Launching in Humboldt County Today

Press release from the COVID Economic Resilience Consortium (CERC):
Wear a mask

A county wide “Wear a Mask” campaign is launching in Humboldt County on August 14. The “Wear a Mask” campaign was developed by a workgroup of the COVID Economic Resilience Consortium (CERC). The CERC is comprised of economic development and business support organizations and was established to share updates, coordinate resources, and ensure consistent communication to area businesses and to the public at large.

The campaign is designed to encourage the consistent use of masks to better protect the health of the community and to slow the spread of the Coronavirus. Many residents and visitors are neglecting to wear masks in public, even though facial coverings have become a worldwide recommendation by health organizations to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Campaign messaging will be delivered through a social media campaign where businesses and families can personalize the imagery in the campaign template with photos of their families, employees of local businesses, or favorite areas/sites in Humboldt. Businesses and the public can access the campaign’s poster template, social media images, and a Wear a Mask .gif image at https://rredc.com/wear-the-mask/.

In addition, there will be a 90-day public service campaign (PSAs) emphasizing the protection of our community’s health and keeping businesses open. A wide range of community leaders will be participating and producing radio, television, and print PSAs.

Marty Coelho, College of the Redwoods’ Executive Director of College Advancement and the CR Foundation, who is chairperson of the campaign said “regardless of your politics, whether you believe in masks or not, no one in Humboldt County disagrees that our medical resources are extremely limited. So why gamble? If face coverings even have a chance of saving Humboldt’s medical system from being overrun with those sick with COVID, why not wear a mask? We need to look out for each other.”

Members of the CERC believe that it is critical that Humboldt residents and visitors believe in the seriousness of the campaign and the benefits to our local economy. “Being ‘pro-mask’ is being ‘pro-business.’ Masking and social distancing is the best way to stop the spread of COVID-19. We all need to do our part to help our local economy by being personally responsible to help contain the virus,” said Gregg Foster, Executive Director for the Redwood Region Economic Development Commission and member of the CERC Executive Committee.

Scott Adair, Humboldt County Director of Economic Development, and member of the CERC Executive Committee said “The County of Humboldt’s office of Economic Development is pleased to remain a part of CERC and supports its members efforts to engage the private sector community in initiatives related to our economic recovery. The new masking campaign led by CERC and College of the Redwoods is aligned with the County’s efforts to protect the public while also supporting the livelihoods of consumers, employees and businesses.”

Local organizations that are helping fund the Wear a Mask campaign include the Arcata Economic Development Corporation, the California Center for Rural Policy, Changing Tides Family Services, the College of the Redwoods Foundation, the Humboldt County Headwaters Fund, the Humboldt County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Redwood Coast Rural Action, the Redwood Region Economic Development Commission, and the Southern Humboldt Business & Visitors Bureau.

3/4 of a million dead and people still have to be asked to wear a mask and oddly disputing that mask even work. Bill Nye broke it down simple enough for kids to understand but there’s still adults that don’t understand how germs work.

If so many Americans were not so publicly and consistently hateful to each other, they might have had a sense of community too that has been the hallmark of successful pandemic strategies in other countries. It is not a sensible strategy to insult those you seek to cooperate with you. In fact that is more likely to have the exact reverse effect.

If more people understood individual liberties and history, and even current events better, they world have a better understanding of how this is being used to make those same societal and cultural changes that typically are allowed after major wars and catastrophic events.

This is just a power grab, or, at the very least, an indication of how some very dedicated and focused people can manipulate millions of people, with billions of dollars.

Dutch Dr. Fauci Thinks Masks Won’t Work. Here’s Why

[Quote]

The Netherlands government said it will not be implementing a national mandatory face mask rule. It says there is “insufficient scientific evidence” to support their use, according to the Outbreak Management Team at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

Jaap van Dissel, Director of the RIVM Centre for Infectious Disease Control, who serves on the Outbreak Management Team, says they are aware of studies that appear to show masks slow the spread of COVID-19, but that at this time, they do not think they will help limit new infections in the Netherlands. According to Reuters, van Dissel said masks could cause people not to adhere to social distancing as well as they have been. This, coupled with people potentially wearing masks incorrectly, could increase disease transmission, he said.

The Netherlands’ decision to not introduce a mandatory mask policy came after mayors in cities across the country said they should be put in place for some busy areas, following a slight uptick in cases in some regions. Since then, cities have been given autonomy to introduce their own mask orders. Following a meeting with mayors last week, Minister for Medical Care Tamara van Ark reaffirmed the national standpoint.

“From a medical point of view, there is no evidence of a medical effect of wearing face masks, so we decided not to impose a national obligation,” Politico quotes her as saying.

Doing what? Posting articles from Newsweek that tell a narrative counter to apoplectic blather spewed by the fearful in the USA?

I have more faith in the common person to use critical thinking than the propoganda machine running MSM and social media narratives. As free people we should be given the best information and the freedom to make choices for ourselves.

Like TRB below who feels he is the one to determine “…the only important part… ” for everyone. That takes a lot of hubris to feel he has the monopoly on telling other people what is “important.”

My brother died a week ago from complications from Covid. So all you denying this is real–it is real. It is highly contagious.

I do not have minions to direct to help with the usual upkeep necessary in this world. I need to get groceries, do my banking, get the mail. There is no way I can just STAY HOME!

Antimaskers are putting us all at risk…risk that we don’t need but being an American means living in ignorance. Our schools have been dumbed down, our TeeVees spew propaganda, critical thinking has been eliminated in the general population.

It’s like being on an out of control train…or existing in the midst of lemmings headed straight toward the cliff…and I can’t remove myself.

Be a community member…cover your air holes so I and many many like me can avoid death and more disability.

Thanks.

Lots of unlucky people this year.

We could say remove all the dead food from the grocery shelves.

We could say don’t let people handle sharp objects.

We could prevent people from eating too much meat,

We could stop the production and sales of alcohol.

We could disarm the entire police force and the public for that matter.

Require mandatory helmets and body armor.

Some people are going to die before their time, do we take away everything from anyone that could potentially harm another living being?

We could, but what kind of world would that be?

If you really look deep, there might have been something else that could have happened that would have changed the outcome.

All that they say is quite obvious. If that’s as far as you want to go with it then you should wear your mask. What the Dutch and Swede’s have taken into account is both the self contamination possibilities from donning and doffing PPE and the false security of wearing a mask. The false security allows people to be in close contact with a false sense a mask protects them when it does not. I practice social distancing with or without a pandemic and this is easily the best way to curb infections. Masks have become a political token; not an effective tool.

It’s kind of hard for some folks to social distance. We have it a bit easier in Humboldt but even on today’s walk through Sequoia Park there were groups of people, many of them high schoolers, hanging out together with no masks and no distancing and they weren’t giving me any space even when I was trying to make room.

But at a basic level, Sweden has a population of ~7.8million and a population density of 23/km2 (159th out of 195 countries in density) which makes it a lot easier to distance than California as a whole with 39.5 million and a density of 97/km2 — which would rank us around #88 if we were treated as a country.

So your continuing diatribe against the mask is applicable to you and your specific situation and perhaps many of the widely distributed rural population. But that’s a tiny fraction of the whole and not particularly useful to the majority of the population where the infection is rampant.

Masks have only become a political tool because one spectacularly ill-informed president has pushed it as one.

Personally I’m wearing a mask that’s rated at 90% effective filtering when there’s a chance I’ll be nearer than 15 ft to anyone else even just in passing and I’m avoiding any substantial time in enclosed spaces or near anyone not in my household. Of course that last part is pretty normal for me anyway, only the mask is new.

Air pollution causes virus transmission. The BYU article says so: “The rate of complications including death is much higher in individuals . . . living in areas with more air pollution 26–28.” I’ve read summaries of two studies that concluded that pollution both increases transmission and makes the vulnerable more vulnerable.

Are you decreasing your driving? Are you buying only clean power? Are you clamoring for health orders that reduce driving and other polluting activities? Do you frown and demand that stores stop serving those driving dirty diesels.

Humboldt is hardly a metric for the rest of California.
If you want to compare apples to apples Humboldt’s population density is 13 people per km^2 versus Sweden’s 23.

This is a local news site and the conversation is about local politics. Thankfully we live in a country built around federalism.

What you fail to grasp, or elucidate, is that even the Dutch are aware that masks help.

Something you have failed to grasp.

As you spin your narrative and obfuscate on simple news regarding public health.

The dutch don’t have libertarian-extremes of anti-official idiots saying social distancing and masks are tyrannical.

The Dutch are compliant Ullr. They don’t think this is a hoax perpetrated by media. They don’t quote CS Lewis in some childish disregard of their Government while thinking everyday their Government is out to get them.

That’s a big difference for us in the US.

No. You’re trying to spin that masks don’t help via the Dutch, but that is not what the dutch are saying.

If you want to talk about distancing, I will mention compliance in the Dutch public, again.

The point is they are complying with their health officials orders.

Perhaps had others done so here for longer, we be better off by now.

But instead, we have “reasonable” people thinking this is some subversive takeover by a tyrannical Government.

And:

The government could reconsider its decision not to make face masks mandatory in public spaces if the number of coronavirus patients “increases significantly”, Minister Hugo de Jonge of Public Health  said in a letter to parliament on Thursday.

Earlier this week, the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) advised against introducing a nationwide obligation to wear face masks in public spaces, saying it has not been scientifically proven to be an effective measure against the spread of the coronavirus.

Before the OMT will revisit the use of face masks, it is important to first investigate which non-medial masks are most effective in blocking droplets and aerosols, the Health Minister said. De Jonge and Minister Tamara van Ark for Medical Care will now look into how such a study can be set up. There should also be training and information on”every use of face masks” De Jonge said. The OMT worries that wearing masks will make people less vigilant in maintaining social distancing, and that people will become infected when the put on and take off masks to eat or drink.

a new story covering old statements. sounds legit.

everyday there are new discoveries and therefore past professional statements change to reflect those new discoveries. Dr. Fauci literally said this to help the ones that don’t get it and it applies to all science in general anyway.

just imagine if someone has AIDS and goes around spraying their blood on people and does it intentionally because they feel its their right and doesn’t believe the doctor that told them they have AIDS.

Please show this item to Dr Frankovich and to Nancy Pelosi, who yesterday held a press conference to explain why there is no current monetary relief program, going forward, for the forseeable future, while wearing her mask around her throat instead of over her mouth.

Pelosi had nothing valuable to say, and stammered, misspoke, and stumbled through a very boring speech, and basically said nothing at all!

Also, be sure to vote against all incumbents, in November, since all of them appear to be doing a very poor job.

IMHO wearing a face mask may help contain the spread of infection somewhat simply by catching some of the moisture we all exhale by breathing. It is not a panacea nor even a preventative. It just helps. And if it offers a bit of help to others, the burden of wearing one when in public is a small sacrifice. In fact the least oppressive request that has been made among many other extremely burdensome demands from government, which has willynilly shut down people’s livelihood with much apologizing.

So you are not convinced- just do it because it makes others feel that you want them to stay healthy. If you are convinced, when you see someone not wearing one, remember it is not all about you either and just keep your distance without provoking a shouting battle that spreads virus and is even more unhealthy for you.

Apparently Sweden has dropped off the MSM radar… hard to attack a country which ran counter to “accepted” policy and found success.

Why we aren’t wearing masks in Sweden
Anders Tegnell, architect of a unique response to the pandemic, defends his approach
BY FREDDIE SAYERS

https://unherd.com/2020/07/swedens-anders-tegnell-judge-me-in-a-year/

“One reason is that the evidence base for using masks in society is still very weak. Even if more and more countries are now enforcing them in different ways … we haven’t seen any new evidence coming up, which is a little bit surprising. The other reason is that everything tells us that keeping social distance is a much better way of controlling this disease than putting masks on people. We are worried (and we get at least tales from other countries) that people put on masks and then they believe they can go around in society being close to each other, even going around in society being sick. And that, in our view, would definitely produce higher spread than we have right now.”

First you use Dutch as an example.

Then you realize the Dutch don’t actively think that their Government is in on some Alex Jones pyschosis based scheme of domination, and you condemn the idea of being Dutch; working with your Government as opposed to actively trying to recreate civil wars.

You’re distrust without reason is not a strength.

You brought the Dutch into this, if you think they are sheep for working with, and not constantly against, their Government – then that was your fault for not seeing it.

So checkfuckingmate bro.

Distrust for a damn good reason.

Imagine if this guy ran for political office.

It these kind of people who put down others for asking hard questions.

“Cigarette smoking doesn’t cause lung cancer”

all the doctors recommend smoking back in the 50s/60s.

Wisdom is learning from the mistakes of others.

Yet Sweden actually had a higher death rate for a time than surrounding countries who took measures to contain their out break. The size of Sweden, is comparable to Cali.. but the population is drastically different. Simply put, the population of Sweden simply has the luxury to socially distance. California, in many areas do not. Even the City of Stockholm has a relatively small population compared to some cities in California. They also have Universal Health Care, which provides citizens with better healthcare if they do catch Covid. Simply put… Sweden is NOT California. Their unique approach is probably not the greatest model for containing the virus, as much of California and the rest of the world can’t actually practice the social distancing that A country like Sweden can afford. Sweden also has great social investment and Social welfare programs.

California probably has a population the size of Sweden that lives on the 110 freeway in Los Angeles… or is at least homeless, which is about to get much worse, now that the Gov. has failed to put together even a simple unemployment extension bill, while they go to “Recess”.. Shure Masks are not a cure, but, they are a preventative.. and a simple means of slowing down the spread so we can move closer to finding better solutions…

Sweden also has less of an illegal immigration problem but even what it has is turning out to be an issue in their procedures. “But there was one major overlooked problem with that approach—one that’s increasingly reflected in the country’s medical data: Sweden’s distinctive national culture and traditions, and the government’s efforts to amplify and support them, aren’t equally accessible to its increasingly diverse residents. The most segregated segments of the population are not as tuned in to the mainstream culture or to authorities’ messaging around the pandemic.” https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/04/21/sweden-coronavirus-anti-lockdown-immigrants/

As people repeated the cliche that “We’re all in this together” it turns out we aren`t after all . https://www.brookings.edu/research/the-rise-of-sweden-democrats-and-the-end-of-swedish-exceptionalism/ Immigration is not necessarily a problem unless there is an unwillingness to accommodate from both the new arrivals and the current residents. Just as a matter of practicality.

Hmm? What Guest.. I am not really connecting the dots with your comment.. not wearing a mask somehow equates to a rant about illegal immigration?? I suppose that many circles of thought for you somehow lead back to.. how.. Hmm.. let me get this straight.. It’s all somehow connected to what.. hmm.. illegal immigration?

The inability of some to grasp reality of science and viral spread somehow equates.. to “my personal freedom” and that somehow equates to… locking children in cages… blink blink.. Blank stare…what what? It’s probably time to take that one back to the drawing board for a closer examination Guest..

Sweden didn’t try to contain the virus. They protected vulnerable populations and let the virus run its course… and now they are not have any “second wave”. Compare Sweden to a plethora of European countries whi did have lock downs. They have a CFR better than some and worse than others. But, they still have a functioning economy.

And how did they protect Vulnerable populations? Probably with some of the best universal health care, and social welfare on the planet. Because Sweden, along with a generally robust small economy, that rely’s on international trade and imports, has taken the initiative to invest in its citizens. That said however, in the beginning with their approach they had one of the highest death rates of the surrounding Nordic Countries. That may have subsided a fair amount Now that people understand how the virus is spread and who it impacts better. As for the economy, keeping it open had a deadly price.

Japan actually took a simular approach. They didn’t lock down, they didn’t close the boarder. They didn’t close the economy, still they issued statements to not gather in large crowded indoor space, to socially distance when possible… but the other aspect is that unlike Sweden, people are historically adapted and comfortable with wearing masks, respectfully. If you get a common Cold in Japan, many respectfully already wear masks. So despite their high crowded population, their transmission and death rates were and are comparably low. Japan also has some of the lowest cardiovascular disease, and diabetes rates in the developed countries. Which most likely also plays apart.

Both countries probably haven’t hired a Major health official that thinks that diseases come from being raped by demons.. that probably has an impact on their success as well.

But America is not Japan.. either. I would like to think that people will be socially responsible and respectful and wear a mask out of common decency.. While the majority do and are, unfortunately there are a lot of folks that will not. Not really a fan of Gov. over bearing policies… not at all. Wearing masks, and practicing a little common sense is probably the best way to get the economy to a better state, so that it can be more productive… maybe our culture needs a bit more encouragement than others, unfortunately.

If everyone followed the CDC guidelines for wearing a mask, there would be a huge reduction in virus cases being spread in public places. I agree with Dr. Fauci 100% of the time on his recommendations. If you choose not to wear a mask here in Humboldt you should be fined up to $500. It is working in other towns. The stupid people that refuse to wear a mask sure as hell understand money, and the fine involved. President Trump is a perfect example of that!!

Perfect, charge $500. well the wealthy won’t care … Nancy spends that for lunch.
The homeless won’t care they can’t pay it….
So that leaves the schmucks that that try to stay within the law,
businesses and shoppers.

What’s next? I suppose they will start offering a $20 reward to rat each other out.

Sick!

They should start their campaign at the Patriot in Garberville where they don’t even have a sign up and has become the store of choice for all the Branch Covidians. Then move down the street to the fed ex store where that decrepit Trump zombie stands out front and calls people slaves that have masks on

More feel good BS…

Stick your propaganda where it doesn’t shine!

A cloth mask does literally as much as your underwear does to filter your rectal gas.

Stay home, wash your hands, or keep social distance is about all you can do if you are worried about contracting CV19.

98% of people ARE wearing masks while you all pretend they are not.
Keep whining all you’re doing is pissing people off.

Who wouldn’t be wearing a mask?

People that can’t breath wearing one. ( ever hear of claustrophobia? )
Young people who think they are invincible.
Ex prisoners who won’t pay any fines.
Drug pushers.

Good luck bitching them into compliance.

Meanwhile you can use a fire to cook dinner or you can use fire to burn down a house.
The same with masks there can be good intentions and evil ones at the same time.

You can drive a car to run errands or to run over people.
Most things can be used for dual purposes.

And we’ve all heard never let a crisis go to waste.

In places around the world with the strictest lockdowns, they are now having massive spikes. Peru has the highest spikes in latin America. In places with the least restrictive rules, death rates are dropping after having had spikes (Sweden). THERE IS NO EVIDENCE that lockdowns work AT ALL, yet TRB (as usual) and others have the audacity to come on this site, preach and call others stupid because they don’t want to engage in the utterly pointless endeavor of wearing masks outside. People already wear masks in every establishment, they have to. So what the fuck else do you mask Nazi’s want?
You people are pathetic. The fact that you all are on your knees for the government doesn’t make the rest of us conspiracy theorists. While your down there, take that mask and put it in the orifice that isn’t already full.

Wait, Peru is your example, not S. Korea or New Zealand? Ok.

Not true. I don’t wear a mask outside, unless I was protesting in a group, which I’m not.

I advise my mother that wearing a mask outside is likely unneccessary.

What I call stupid is calling mask mandates in indoor public spaces during a pandemic tyranny.

Or calling the respectfully mask wearing public NAZIs, or sheep, or plebeians.

All that shit is downright stupid.

Like saying I’m on my knees to the Government or technocrats because I don’t think this is a Bill Gates conjob with Democrats.

Your arguements are pathetic and feeble.
