Frequently, Glen Senestraro, Superintendent of the Fortuna Union High School District will update us on what’s going on in his district.

Dear Fortuna Union High School District Community,

These have been some of the most challenging times in our memories, if not ever. The uncertainty of it all is so difficult to handle and understand. We sympathize with you and are trying to do the best for our students, staff, parents and community. We have been working diligently on the action plan for the fall semester.

The Board of Trustees has had multiple meetings regarding the reopening of school sites. The District staff and board convened a Reopening Work Group comprise of teachers, support staff, administration, parents and board members. The group has met several times discussing safety protocols and facilitate safe re-opening. In addition, a survey was developed to gather parent/community input.

At the July 28, 2020, board meeting, the FUHSD Board of Trustees voted to open on August 10, 2020, with in-person instruction utilizing multiple safety protocols. Academy of the Redwoods will be a hybrid approach with and A/B/C grouping in-person on separate days. East High School has small class sizes and can facilitate social distancing protocols; therefore, will be re-opening as normal with the shortened day schedule. Fortuna High School has developed a six-week, two-period block schedule with every student coming to only two classes each day. This will reduce the number of contacts per day and help us to facilitate smaller class sizes.

Students will be required to wear a face-covering while at school (unless exempted). A distance learning option will be offered to all students. Communications will be going out soon to allow parents/guardians to choose a distance learning option, if they wish. The distance learning option will be with an online curriculum. Bussing will be available with temperature taking, mandatory masks, sanitizer, etc. Please contact your site to find out more specifics.

The safety and well-being of our students and staff are a priority. The Board’s decision to start school in-person is attributed to the fact in-person learning is the best. Precautions are in place to reduce the risk of infection and spreading using the guidelines from CDPH, CDC, Humboldt County Health, CDE, and HCOE. These plans and precautions are not perfect or without risk.

We appreciate the participation in our processes and your trust in us to deliver outstanding educational opportunities for your students. We do not take this trust and responsibility lightly.

The Fortuna Union High School District’s regularly scheduled board meetings are on the second Wednesday of each month. The public meetings are held in the Fortuna High School Library, if allowed, at 6:00 PM and located at 379 12th Street in Fortuna or via Zoom. The current board members are President Charles Ellebrecht, Vice President Seth McGrath, Clerk Carla Diaz, Anita Gage and Jeana McClendon.

The Fortuna Union High School District is proud to serve the greater Fortuna area with outstanding programs at all of our sites, including Fortuna High, Academy of the Redwoods and East High. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know. We can be reached by phone at 707-725-4462 or by email at [email protected].

No school has been able to figure out how to stop teens from drinking, smoking, taking pills and working on making babies, but they totally have this mask thing on lockdown.

Statements like this only ever exist online.

Because no one could possibly claim masks have “long lasting psychological and spiritual consequences” while looking another human being in the eye.

Some say forced schooling was the same thing.

Schools are little more than glorified day cares.

37th in the world is nothing to be proud of.

Maybe people will walk back to homeschooling curriculums, and the parents can actually get some of the funding that follow’s the children.

Everything is on the chopping block, this covid hysteria will result in witch hunts for the un vaccinated just so you can feel safe and not lose your job to the AI.

I see why people just want to burn the whole thing down.

Slavery wasn’t just about race, it is about class.

Mike, last I checked teaching kids to not drink, smoke, take pills or make babies was the job of a parent(s). Although there were the Regan years with the D.A.R.E. program – I am not certain that still exists.

There are plenty of open seats on local school boards, I encourage you to give it a try and see if helping your local community makes you feel better than complaining on a blog and not seeing the results you hope for.

No? I couldn’t do any better job of the futile endeavor of controlling teenagers behavior than the people that can’t do it now. It may be the job of the parents but the parents aren’t at the school now are they, and teenagers are idiots, I’m kinda a expert on this subject as I used to be one.

Remember students of America, dispensaries, casinos and liquor stores are all essential. Your education is not. Placating teachers unions in return for their democratic vote is what matters most. Liberalism is a mental disorder.

🕯🌳Well if they have the students interest at heart then put the FUHSD Board of Trustees in the classrooms with the students. Without masks. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🚑

Why without masks when they are mandatory? What kind of an example would they be setting? Have you lost your mind? Glad your not in charge .

It is what it is.–Trump on the death toll, 8/4.

I’m not a fat, meth head, dope smoker, chain cigarette toker, diabetes and heart disease having person. But, take a look around Humboldt County, there are plenty of people who should be worried about catching this thing.

This is not a political debate. It will probably claim a few hundred thousand more lives in the US. But, who cares if it kills some locals, right?

Not to mention, it already has. Oh wait….they were old, so it doesn’t matter….tell that to their family.

They were in a nursing home so if their family wasnt prepared for them to die then thats ther problem. Do you understand assisted living ? Its where we keep old sick folks that are near the pearly gates…

This is not a political debate, but can’t help but mention Trump. Try to get past Trump, you might be able to do the math.

Everybody knows that reopening schools is a bad idea in terms of COVID control, but the other matters weigh in too much: social interaction for teens, parents working, etc. Reopening schools will spread COVID, maybe not in all schools but it will at a grant scale, and most likely cause death of teachers and students …choices are made…will they be assumed by those who make them?

Daycare is open for the children of essential workers. It is a necessity.

The hell it is. I’m non essential and my kids have been going to daycare every day they’ve been open. But then Again I haven’t missed one day of work either. The shutdown is a myth in case you haven’t noticed. Do you really think people haven’t gone to work for half a year? Besides government employees.

It’s too dangerous for prisoners to be in jail, so they are being released, but ok for kids to go to school. Priorities are all messed up right now. School board members should be recalled.
