Albion Stand-Off Ends When Assailant is Doused by Fire Hose and Taken Down by K9

Armed Standoff Matt LaFever's

A standoff between Mendocino County law enforcement and an armed man ended Saturday evening after the subject poured gasoline on himself threatening self-immolation in the Albion area. Mendocino County Sheriff Matt Kendall said the subject is a known felon on parole who had a ramey warrant for reckless evasion and threats against a police officer

At some point during the six hour standoff, Mendocino County Sheriff Matt Kendall said the suspect had doused himself with gasoline and was holding a lighter while sitting in the cabin of the vehicle. Sheriff Kendall said the flammable subject kept officers from using tear gas or other gas agents used in stand off situations due to the incendiary properties of the devices. Eventually though an Albion Volunteer firefighter on scene reportedly sprayed the subject with a fire hose.

Sheriff Kendall said deputies saw a rifle butt many times during the standoff. At one point, Sheriff Kendall described law enforcement deploying a drone to get an overhead perspective of the subject and that vantage point confirmed the presence of a long gun. When the subject caught sight of the drone, Sheriff Kendall reported the subject became angry and broke out the window of his vehicle. Sheriff Kendall later revealed that the firearm turned out to be a pellet gun.

Sheriff Kendall said it was at this point that firefighters from Albion Volunteer Fire Department sprayed “hundreds of gallons” into the subject’s vehicle forcing him to get out. The man was then immediately subdued by a K9 Officer.

According to scanner traffic reported on by Paul McCarthy’s MendocinoSportsPlus, deputies contacted the subject at approximately 2:00 pm near I Road in Albion and attempted negotiations when it was recognized he was armed and threatening law enforcement. At approximately 2:15 pm, scanner traffic indicated law enforcement requested the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office Armored Vehicle to assist in the incident.

Kathy Wylie, Albion resident, said locals received two robocalls during the incident: “One with a warning of police activity in the area, at 4pm.  And the second with the ‘all clear’ at 9:16.  I also got a text message with the all-clear message at 9:14.”

According to Mendocino County 5th District Supervisor Ted Williams who was there serving his role as a volunteer with the Albion Fire Department, several agencies responded to the stand-off including California Highway Patrol, California Parks Service, Fish and Wildlife, Ukiah Police Department, Albion Fire Department, and a local ambulance company.manning the standoff lasting nearly six hours.

Supervisor Williams praised law enforcement’s response to the incident characterizing it as “patient and coordinated.”

There is nothing like good old American ingenuity and a fire hose.

Thanks MCSO, I am so relieved to be reading about a result that may allow the man to turn his life around.

Might be a “sad situation” but I was laughing at the VFD and the firehose. Excellent response.

I wonder how many people present at this incident have seen the Al Yankovic movie “VHF”….

I looked it up, and the title is actually “UHF”, and that movie got by under my radar, with my totally missing it back in 1989.

You are correct, it is “UHF” and I made a mistake. Thank you for correcting the title. BUT the movie is wildly funny and includes a scene with a fire hose blasting at full force. I recommend the movie.

Cause shooting a guy is super easy for cops. There’s no mental anguish, fear of prosecution, fear of loss of job. There’s no paperwork. There’s no extensive investigation. There’s no media scrutiny. There’s no subsequent protests. It’s really no big deal. Smart comment!

Oh Pike don’t shatter the narrative. What would their lives be without the “bad police” rant. Hell, they might have to get a job.

Considering people around here have been shot for brandishing flare guns and rakes , yes I would consider it restraint on the police officers parts for not shooting him out right. PS. I was commending not condemning…

I find the use of firehoses and a K9 problematic, given their use in the civil rights era. Couldn’t they have flushed this guy out using less racist means? Perhaps tossing marshmallows into the cab?

He was attempting self-immolation not pointing a gun at others.

Point a gun at others and lethal force is the only rational option to save innocent lives.

Don’t know about Mendo, but Arcata FD is already spread pretty thin. Last election measure didn’t pass. Jobs got cut. Some Fire Fighters got demotions as well as pay cuts. This info based on my wife’s coworker whose husband received a demotion and pay cut.

Not a fan of taxes by any means, but if it funds fire fighting, I’ll give it at least half a thought.

I believe the proper term is cab of a vehicle (most likely a truck) not a “cabin” unless the guy has some type of log cabin on wheels which would be super cool (or super hot if he lit the lighter while inside. I notice these types of errors often in Kym’s “reporting.” Perhaps a proof reader could be hired with some of that advertising money. First ones on me but I’ll need some compensation if we are subjected to these errors in the future. Thanks and your welcome. We all still love you!

Drew, do you think that “advertising money” lets her roll around on a mound of money like Scrooge McDuck? Did you ever think that maybe that money is paying her bills, ie rent, utilities, gas for travel to and from story/article locations, time spent writing these stories, paying other writers, . . . ? Do you think she should not pay herself a living wage? Perhaps you would like to volunteer your proof reading expertise and time. Or, better yet, make a donation to this website. Maybe you think you could start and keep up on your own full time news site. We all would look forward to reading it without a single mistake. Don’t worry, you will probably be treated in kind. I, and many others, have corrected her (valid) typos on several occasions, with kindness or a lighthearted joke, knowing that she is far overworked and probably staring at a computer screen with blurry eyes after gallons of coffee and a multitude of other stories still needing to be written.

It comes from the word cabriolet….
Cab is short for “cabin” and refers to the part of the pickup where passengers ride. This is the sheltered part with seats, as opposed to the open bed of the truck. Commercial large trucks also have cabins, or cabs.

Not true at all. I am an English professor at UCSB and have taught for over 40 years. I just don’t have time to do all this proofing as I am a very busy man. I also am part owner of two strip clubs in the Bay Area. Poor grammar makes me crazy and journalists have an obligation to their readers. That’s what my father always said and he was Ivy League educated. Thanks for correcting the errors and let’s try to avoid them in the future or they WILL be pointed out. Hey, I have seen my dancers roll around in cash like a duck, funny times. Although my girls are unable to dance right now due to the pandemic and are getting zero help from the govt because sex workers are not considered people by many.

Wow!! “Cab and/or Cabin”, who really cares?? Seems to me that you had NO problem understanding exactly what sweet Kim was saying, yes?, no? So why even hassle her about it?? If your so special and magical, open up your own local news website?? I don’t think you have a clue how difficult it is!! Kim puts her heart and soul into this media site, for you and everybody else’s enjoyment. Then some [edit] like you come along to try and fuck it up!? Taking away from the story it self, to pull in ALL the viewers attention towards you and your lame point and Please in the future, save your unwanted opinions for something else. Thank you

Hey I actually find his opinions very funny so why don’t you speak for yourself, as you do not speak for me. This guy is an English professor and strip club owner? And the correct spelling is Kym not Kim. Let’s stop taking away from the real news here ok partner? Giddy up’

Very informative article. Crazy times. Some comments here indicate the stress and frustration underlying our lives and times.
Cabin is technically only used for the pilot area of a ship or space vehicle or a large vehicle doubling as a residence. So it probably should have been cab. But since we understood the meaning, it doesn’t matter much.
An “English prof” has an irresistible impulse to make corrections. So what? It’s really the most benign of feedback.
As for fire hoses and K9s, it seems like they could be pretty dangerous to the victim. If the situation ended well, maybe we can commend those involved for their skill in using dangerous, potentially lethal weapons.
Look for the good.
