[UPDATE 2 p.m: Road Reopened] Traffic Collision on 101 by Big Lagoon

Traffic collision, crash, wreck, feature iconTwo vehicles–a blue Titan and an SUV–collided on northbound Hwy 101 near Big Lagoon in the Kane Road area about 12:09 p.m., according to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page.

According to first reports, two adults and four children are injured. Two ambulances have been requested. [Note: at 12:32 p.m. a third ambulance was requested.]

An air ambulance has been requested also and was diverted from the motorcycle accident near Redcrest to respond to this.

The dispatcher reports there is one major injury and four moderate injuries.

Please remember that information gathered from initial reports is subject to revision as more facts become available.

UPDATE 12:43 p.m.: One patient is just now being extricated from the vehicle. Both lanes of 101 are closed until around 1 p.m., according to the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page.

UPDATE 12:53 p.m.:A second copter is headed to the scene but weather conditions at the normal landing zone at the schoolhouse are not good enough so emergency personnel are searching for another site.

UPDATE 1:11 p.m.: “We’ve determined we’ll only be flying one patient,” reports one of the aircraft crew. “You can release Copter 102.” The four moderately injured patients will be taken by ground ambulance while the patient with major injuries will be flown by Reach helicopter to a hospital.

UPDATE 2 p.m: Road reopened.

UPDATE 2:44 p.m.: A reader, Lynda, sent us this video of the scene.

Another bad accident. I hope all the injured people will be fine. Lots of dangerous road in that area. A big thank you to all the first responders for their work removing everyone safely!

The road is not dangerous as much as the drivers failing to exercise caution and safe speeds.

Industrial Disease, I have driven that road for many years, and it is dangerous in many spots, leaving you no place to get out of the way of a vehicle on the wrong side of the road. You are correct that many cars and big rig drivers use excessive speed. You can only drive like that for so long, before you cause and accident, and possibly kill someone.

Why take forever to help. Then only take one in a helicopter that could obviously take all quickly. God help us

my wife and i were headed surf fishing at freshwater just past big lagoon a car came by from the north with hazard lights only a couple more came by we were stopped in the traffic about 200 yards from the accident we were only there about 2 minutes and a chp came by from the south then cdf other marked cars then the first ambulance withen 10 or 15 minutes it was at least 8 to 10 minutes or so north of trinadad do the math . pretty quick response if you ask me. get a life caring soul. First responders are the front line also volunteers showed up from the south we were stopped about a hour the blue truck looked like an accordion do not know how it passed the gov crash test. i am tired of people whining about the police etc in the replies to kyms articles especially large heroin and crank busts. sorry for people in accident that is a bad spot at the bottom of the hill and a two lane going to one lane
