Yesterday, BLM biologist, Russ Namitz, found a deceased humpback whale calf, about a half mile north of the mouth of the Mattole River.

Namitz said the calf, which is about five meters long, is “relatively fresh, just starting to decompose.” He added that there are no “obvious signs of depredation.”

For those who can’t make the treck to see this unique creature up close, Namitz sent along the following photos.
