Public Health Warns Cannabis Community That Some of Its Members Have Tested Positive for COVID

Today, the Humboldt County Joint Information Center reached out to the cannabis community with a message about the dangers of COVID spreading among the industry. Dr. Teresa Frankovich warned them in the video above that the testing labs “are seeing some COVID cases in this community.” (See below for full transcript.)

She assured people in the cannabis business, “We want to make sure people understand that Public Health’s interest in this is simply to protect workers and the community at large.” She goes on to urge testing and offer information on what to do if you are experiencing symptoms.

On June 24, we received word that nine people working in the cannabis industry in Southern Humboldt but living elsewhere in the county had tested positive for COVID-19. Citing concerns for privacy, Frankovich refused to confirm that this was true. However, she did say that people are counted in their home area. The bulk of those testing positive that week were located in the greater Humboldt Bay area which includes the population centers of Arcata, Eureka, and Fortuna thus making it likely that the workers traveled from there to Southern Humboldt.

On June 30, the Humboldt County Joint Information Center released a tip sheet for cannabis employers:

Cannabis and Covid tips

Cannabis and Covid tips from Humboldt County Joint Information Center.

If you work in or have contact with those working in the cannabis industry, please consider getting tested and following the tips provided.

Below is a transcript of what Frankovich said in the video:

I’m Dr. Terri Frankovich and this is the COVID minute. I just wanted to take a moment to reach out to individuals working in the cannabis industry in our county and let them know that we have been concerned because we are seeing some cases in this community, and we want to make sure people understand that Public Health’s interest in this is simply to protect workers and the community at large.

If you’re interested in being tested, you can go to our county website. You can call the Joint Information Center at 441-5000. Or, if you’re ill and concerned, I would suggest calling your health care provider. If you don’t have a health care provider, call the Health Department at 268-2182. That’s our confidential communicable disease line and a nurse will be able to speak with you and help arrange testing.

And this is your COVID minute.

Here’s a screengrab showing contact information:

Yes we’ve all seen the daily repeating of covid and cannabis. For the past two weeks. There has been more focus and coverage on covid in the cannabis community than covid in the elderly care community.?? The new cannabis is bad propaganda.

Probably such a hot topic because so many undocumented and non local people descend on the community and live together sharing everything in prob not the cleanest conditions….. not exactly the same at an elderly care facility.

Most people I see out there are passing around joints. Really- they are! It’s incredible but true. Even with their co-workers and friends who are travelling back and forth out of the area. Yes they are the younger people (under 40 so don’t trust them!).

Is there a reason why HumCo Public Health doesn’t add another chart to their dashboard showing where the cases were contracted? That would be a lot more useful than knowing where the people live and incredibly simple for them to do.

Those who contracted it live in Northern Humboldt, but got COVID on a farm in Southern Humboldt. Sounds like it may be one of the “temporary labor” suppliers to the legal industry. Yikes! That is going to spread like wildfire all over Humboldt.

Does anyone know if our county is looking into testing our sewage systems for Covid19?

For what, covid is in the community, so it would prove nothing….

Our testing situation is flawed here because it takes so long to get results. If we tested the Sewage systems we would have a better idea exactly how prevalent Covid19 is in our community. As we continue easing restrictions, it also helps us keep track of a potential surge coming before it happens so our county can be better prepared.

If someone wants to check our sewage system, then they had better have a shovel or two with them. We do know where our septic tank is, but not what area of the tank top it is located in.

Who fuckin cares! We’re alive, arent we? Only the strong survive! Woooo!

You government clowns are gonna act like we all got it now when all we do is cough! Make some bull reason to force testing on potheads?

When will the fear mongering over a 99% survival rate end?

The ICUs in hard hit areas are filling up. Simply surviving COVID does not mean that many of these patients will not be permanently affected by the virus. We are finding out how much damage an extended bout of this illness can do to one’s lungs and we are seeing some patients having relapses when they thought they were well. I am growing weary of the claims that this is some kind of political stunt. You folks who are taking your cues from FOX and the ignoramus Trump need to pay attention to reality. This is a world wide pandemic that the U.S. has botched and the longer we keep screwing it up the longer it will be until the economy comes back.

4.9% death rate or 7% are in ICU minus 100% does not equal 99%. Also, we are using a scale of millions which equates to thousands of people, fyi.

LOL! The “essential” business! The ONLY reason cannabis was/is essential is the tax revenue. Plain and simple truth.

All the commenters above who are speaking of the dangers of Covid-19. Please tell me how many people you know that have died of Covid (no referencing mass media in your response please). I’ll even let you use people with pre-existing conditions. Thanks.

Humlocal. My grandmother died from covid 19
In the Phoenix area last week. I’m sure you can tell from my avatar that I am not a liberal either. Take it for what it is, the numbers that you all think are just numbers are more than statistics. They are people with names. One happens to be my grandma. Do I blame anyone?? No, just answering your question since you asked. But I do miss my Grandma, and now wear a mask everywhere in public. Do I think the mask is effective?? Probably not but I wear it out of respect.

Sorry for your loss, did she have the from covid or with Covid?

Hospitals and Corporate executives who sit on their boards, are steering the ship from behind the scenes.

Stay healthy, keep that immune system strong.

Condolences, sincerely.

If I am scared, it for my mother, who is 81. My dad died 3 months ago yesterday (not covid), and she lives out on their farm by herself. Thankfully she has my sister and brother (when he can get away from Michigan) and the grandkids. She is in Missouri. A lot of people are not taking it seriously, though even the very conservative neighbors she has do take it seriously.

She wears her mask and gloves. But there are enough chucklefreaks to endanger her.

Three people I know personally that have severely suffered from it, a mother and her two sons. The mother died, and the last I heard her sons were still in really bad shape in the ICU…that is in NJ.

My county was mostly unaffected by it until the last days of May. The total cases went from 9 to 124 in just a couple of days. It’s 349 right now with 4 deaths. We thought our little county had skated, until we didn’t. I still see people that don’t live here not wearing masks. The vast majority of residents do wear masks. But we are on 101, on the coast, lots of tourists and/or just passing through.

Hey, BRM, You are a straight shooter man. Thanks. Your loss is sad and difficult, and saying something about it is brave. I don’t always agree with you, but respect the way you make your point. Your comment brings home that we’re all in this together, one way or another. I used to say I’d rather go fishing with George W. Bush than golfing with Barack Obama. Despite being a Sanders Lefty or whatever.
I’d still rather go fishing with Black Rifles Matter than do anything fun with Biden or Trump. How ’bout that.
If we were sitting around the BBQ, I’d show you videos of the NFAC: Not F^(#n Around Coalition. Look it up! What do you make of that!? Black Lives Matter meets Black Rifles Matter!…

Humlocal; it’s a very much unknown virus that has lots of strange long term effects, besides occasionally killing people. I know that many well informed people in the medical community (not politicians or business people) are very concerned, and that’s who I trust. Get your advice from solid sources.

I know of three close friends who’ve been infected. Took long time to recover. I know first hand that Navajo Nation ~ 4000 have tested positive and ~400 have died. They don’t have resources to do proper hygiene measures for lack of water and social distancing within families is not always possible.

It amazes me how many people are experts on the virus, infection rates, death rates & so on.
When was the last time any of you spent several days in the hospital? It’s a nasty place to be, not to mention the huge bill you get upon release.

Sorry to hear of your loss, BRM. May your memories of her soothe the loss. She’s a thought away in the spirit world and loves you very much.

I have a close relative and his wife who have been very very sick for two weeks and tested positive for COVID. He’s getting better, but it’s still sketchy for her. They live far out of the area, so no contact/exposure here, just texting with them.

Dazey’s in Willow Creek allows people into the store without masks. Some clerks do not wear masks. Call for parking lot pick up. They’re very accommodating.

Theres a grip of folks that arent willing to protect themselves or others. They can be seen in the parking lot at Trader Vics with a gun stuffed in the rear of their baggy sweat pants. No masks. 5 small kids in tow and an emaciated wife. While its true theres very little of it in HC it takes all of two weeks to bloom like algae in warm shallow rivers. A little concern for the well-being of the community would go a long way toward slowing any progression in rural populations. Where a mask in populated areas and stay clean. Such an insignificant action to take to keep the community rolling and healthy.

Stay Safe

And from all Ive read it doesnt spread wel on textured surfaces such as bud or clothing or paper. Plastic and steel and close contact with others from outside your circle are things to be weary of. You dont have to end your social life but you do need to take precautions.

Cuddle Puddles are out for now. Sorry. Check back after October.
