Expect More Than Hour Delay on 299 From July 7 Through July 9 Due to Planned Helicopter Operations

Press release from Caltrans District 2:

Helicopter operations for the installation of mesh drapery are currently planned on State Route 299 near Burnt Ranch (Trinity County) on July 7, July 8, and July 9.

Between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on July 7, July 8, and July 9, motorists can anticipate more than an hour delay (up to 75-minutes) in the area. This work and scheduling is subject to change at any time. Operations are also planned at the project site near Junction City on these days, with up to 20-minute delays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The work is a portion of the current Burnt Junction Drapery Project on SR 299 near Burnt Ranch and Junction City. The project is currently expected to be done by November.

In general, motorists can anticipate up to 20-minute delays, Mondays-Fridays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. at both locations. Longer delays for helicopter, blasting, and scaling operations are anticipated for short windows during the project.

Plan ahead for long delays if you must travel in the area during these dates and times. Motorists are advised to carry water, snacks, a cell phone, and have a full tank of gas prior to traveling into the project area.

Please contact the District 2 Public Information Office at 530-225-3426 or [email protected] with questions. Updated project information can also be found on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

Three days with waiting periods for being stopped is well worth it. 299 will be much safer when those rock barriers are attached to the banks. If you can’t stop in the distance you can see on 299 you just might eat a rock pile or another vehicle in your lane trying to miss the rocks. Be careful around the workers, and offer the hot flagger a cold drink when you go by.

I don’t know, the one way traffic for that active fire has a pretty quick turnaround time and hella-helicopters, how bout we settle for 15/20 minutes eh??

Buzz, if you can see the chopper with the metal netting trying to lower it and place on the bank, and secured with workers, you will realize 15 – 20 minutes makes that very dangerous job even more so. I give a big high five to the pilots and ground workers!

Do it at night when no one is on the highways lol. Highway 36 closed in more than 3 spots daily and 299 has 3 or more road closures. Y’all making sure no one gets East lately.

People are so impatient , and have minimal understanding. Imagine doing all of the work being done presently, in the dark. They are performing this work to reduce fatalities, and it’s important that they do it correctly. They need to see what they are working on. With that said, be patient and grateful that you can look forward to better road conditions on Hwy 299.
