Nine New Cases Connected to Southern Humboldt Cannabis Grow

Dr. Frankovich Covid testing

Yesterday, Dr. Teresa Frankovich, the Humboldt County Public Health Officer, continued her policy of not releasing information about even patient details that would seem to still leave the patients unidentifiable to the community. She would not confirm that information we received independently was correct. However, we have learned from an anonymous source that the nine additional COVID-19 positive cases which were confirmed yesterday were connected to one Southern Humboldt cannabis farm but those infected did not reside (or at least most did not reside) in the Southern Humboldt area.

Frankovich said in the video we posted early this morning, “As you know, we don’t comment on, you know, particular infections in specific workplaces unless it’s relevant to public safety.”

We requested information that would give us an idea in what general area the original residences of the persons infected were located. We asked, “Are the people testing positive from Humboldt County? From California? From out of state? Or from international areas such as Mexico? At this point do we have a sense of how widely they traveled in Humboldt?”

For reasons involving patient privacy, Dr. Frankovich declined to answer. She did say that if they lived in other parts of the county and traveled to Southern Humboldt, they would be listed not as Southern Humboldt infections but rather as infections in the areas they resided. So on Friday when the geographic distribution is provided, the new infections won’t show in Southern Humboldt.

Although Frankovich also declined to say how widely the new cases had traveled throughout the region, contract tracers will be working to identify those the nine people interacted with and reaching out to them.

Speaking generally, Frankovich noted that because some cannabis grows hire “people from all over, they have certain challenges.” She encouraged cultivators to contact the confidential communicable disease line at (707) 268-2182. She said, “We want to make sure that whether they are legal or not legal operations, that they understand we’d like to work with them. Basically if they have someone sick, we’d like to be able to help work with them to get people tested and to really just make sure everyone around them is safe.”

Cultivators who have people working on their farms, whether legally or illegally, should consider getting everyone tested even if no one is experiencing symptoms. Dr. Frankovich noted, If cultivators “are interested in doing some screening testing, we would be really happy to work with them on that as well. I think it’s an important population for us to keep healthy because it impacts not only the individuals but our community.”

Coincidentally, earlier this week there was a mobile unit offering free testing available in Redway. We don’t know when the next available free testing in the area will be available but the COVID hotline at (707) 441-5000 should be able to offer some answers. In addition, Redwoods Rural Health Care in Redway has testing for those experiencing more serious symptoms. Call for pre-screening first at (707) 923-2783.

Employers are urged to arrange work spaces so employees are at least six feet apart, ideally outside or at least with open windows. They should make sure that employees have personal protective equipment including masks. They should minimize time employees spend in enclosed spaces with others including minimizing traveling in the same vehicle. They should ensure that employees have access to water and soap for frequent handwashing. For more information, see here.

9! What new thing has been added to the environment. Could it be trimigents. We we’re all fine until they showed up. Come on mom and pop help out you’re community a little. What next are they bringing in measles and chicken pocks. We need you but we don’t need them. Hire local.

We should have a matricula consular form for any who come into country to work as a migrant trimigant. It’s tough work and can create repetitive motion injury so it’s not something to do for a lifetime of living. Boutique trimming could be a sales point but….

it’s hilarious and frustrating, the people going apoplectic over wearing masks because of their civil liberties are the same people cheering on the abuse of civil liberties by the police.

it’s almost like they don’t actually have a coherent ideology or position, beyond kneejerk spite.

Give one example of someone “…cheering on the abuse of civil liberties by the police…” and was also “…apoplectic over wearing masks…”

The blatant cognitive dissonance is the MSM lauding “peaceful” (read:rioting and looting) protests as reasonable expressions of angst without any real risk of Covid infection while demonizing people protesting arbitrary lockdown orders, while actually being peacful, because they are going to spread the ‘rona.

If you don’t think that there are people out there cheering on the knee choking of black people you live in a parallel universe.
You might want to consider that African Americans have had it. They’re done. You would have them ask nicely after 400 years of abuse and oppression?

For the record, humboldt county cannabis policies encourage the larger grows who need 9 plus workers, often coming from elsewhere so they can take advantage to cut their costs in order to afford the 4-5 different taxes etc. While those same county policies wipe out smaller mom and pops. Ma and pa do not need to leave their property during quarantine, because they do all the work themselves on modest sized farms. Small farms cannot justify the permitting complexities or costs or enforcement risks and fees. End the abatement program! Let people grow food and medicines and survive the pandemic!

I agree with a comment on another covid article. If you refuse to wear a mask, you should be the one to stay home. Your selfishness should not infringe on others rights to get their groceries, etc. as safely as possible at this time. Grow up and quit acting like a two year old.

Posting some signs promoting the benefits plus making sure there is a ready source for obtaining masks would help. This is a sea change in behavior for western countries and demanding compliance will probably a contrary effect. Also the benefits of wearing a mask when not in crowds or inside is not so clear. Maybe leaving peoplealone outside when they are just passing might reduce the negative interactions.

The virus “we” have came mostly from Europe on the East coast. It came from China on the West Coast.

The first west coast cases were from China but the main outbreak was driven by travel from Europe and the east coast because of the complacent response to the outbreak in Europe. Witness the Barcelona crew who caused the Westhaven outbreak, as has apparently been confirmed.

I live in So Hum. Went to Eureka for medical reasons. The only places where they were wearing masks were in Costco and Eureka Health no place else. Went to Fortuna yesterday again for medical reason. Every person in Safeways had a mask on. Went to Ace but left because NOT one person in there had a mask on. The worst was the medical office next to the hospital. Not one person, zero who worked there had a mask on! In So Hum everybody wears a mask. The only ones who don’t are the out of towners and tourists. I was at Redwoods Rural Health and every person working there had a mask on! At the protest march a few weeks ago one lady wore no mask. She said “i’m a rebel” and the most radical person there told her she wasn’t a rebel but STUPID. We all stayed away from her. We all smile but with masks on!!!

It would make me feel better if you wore a mask as they are helpful to catch other people’s infections from spreading, not to prevent the wearer from getting infected. I wear a mask to protect you, not myself, and think it’s a pretty minor thing to do as a social grace.

The last place I shopped last week for groceries in Eureka, everyone was wearing masks, and trying to keep 6 feet apart (not easy when the aisles are not wider than 6 feet), and were lining up (long lines) keeping to the 6 ft markings. I do admit to being irritated at some medical facilities being less than helpful in trying to avoid infection.

Examining the current evidence for thetwo-metre rule, Prof Heneghan and Prof Jefferson looked at 172 studies cited in a recent review in The Lancet and found just five had dealt explicitly with coronavirus infection in relation to distance. Only one mentioned coming within six feet of a patient, and that paper showed proximity had no impact….
Sir Iain Duncan Smith, the former Conservative leader, said recent research showed that reduction from two metres to one metre would raise infection risk just slightly, from 1.3 per cent to 2.6 per cent….
(in the current era of widespread abuse of percentages that would be headlined “Risk of Infection 100% greater at 3 feet than 6 feet social distance”) 😉

Passing by someone with or without Covid symptoms on the street at 3 feet or 6 feet is not the predominate way that contagion usually occurs. Proximity to the sick, and sustained exposure for more than a passing moment are the key factors for risk.

England is considering dropping the 6 foot rule and going to a 3 foot social distancing.

Any reports of the viral load of recent cases lessening. That would seem to be important information to share….

The 100% greater risk citation would be accurate, regardless of your sneering. You may scoff because of the “small” percentages, but when you multiply that by the number of interactions that happen in public places, the risk grows proportionally. Please have some consideration for others, in particular those who are compelled to work with the public.

Makes me wonder how long it will take for COVIDphobia to be a medical diagnosis just as Mysophobia (Germaphobia). One difference between the two is that Germaphobes have not historically demanded everyone else to stay home because of their condition.

And before you jump on my a** for being a “bad person without community care …. I have had no visitors since 2/24, have left home approx 8x for necessities, have practiced “safe” behavior in respect for others, and just made my first trip to laundromat in 4 months. All out of abundance of caution. But I cannot breath in a mask and will only wear when absolutely necessary.

There are many reasons why this may appear to be so. As hospitals reopen for general procedures, they are testing for Covid and get many asymptomatic positives. A friend in the AZ health system who admits there is an apparent increase in cases, tells me this.

They are testing these in-patients every day and counting each positive test into the tally, until the patient tests negative. Even though they originally entered hospital for ACL surgery or other non CV19 issue, if they test positive they are listed as a Covid hospitalization. Kind of skews the figures doesn’t it?

Curious if this might be related to the worker at The Ganjery who tested positive? Yes- The Ganjerie closed down. But do we know if this worker was working with customers or packaging? No we don’t and we will never be told. Why? HIPPA….I think privacy is important. But at this point I think the lack of pertinent information we are allowed to have is detrimental. Perhaps some parts of HIPPA need to be relaxed in a pandemic like this. We don’t need to know the actual people but some further info would be helpful. I know we are supposed to always be super careful and behave like covid is everywhere but it seems to me like we are all suffering some fatigue from constant attention combined with minimal info. We deserve to know more- like why am I the guy telling you about the worker at The Ganjerie? I wish the guy the best of health and a full recovery. But I’m also needing to tell people who shopped there to be aware? Or is it better to say nothing about anything and just let people know nothing- like HIPPA would have us do? I think we all deserve more information than we have been allowed to get….
