City of Arcata Reminds Residents That Many City Facilities Are Still Closed

This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

City of ArcataThe City of Arcata would like to remind the community that many City facilities remain closed to the public in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.

While playgrounds and skate parks are wonderful places to enjoy, they create challenges during a public health crisis. To protect the health and safety of the community, all City playgrounds and the Arcata Skate Park are temporarily closed due to the risk they pose for spreading the virus. Other City facilities that remain closed to the public include the Interpretive Center at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary, the Redwood Lounge and the Redwood Lodge at Redwood Park, the Arcata Community Center, and City sports fields for team sport use. The State of California’s COVID-19 guidance does not permit use of facilities where individuals who are not from the same household could potentially be in close proximity, as it increases their potential for exposure to COVID-19.

Community members may see activities taking place at these facilities while Arcata Recreation’s Summer Camp Programs are in session now through Friday, August 21. Summer camp activities take place in a controlled environment where modifications have been made to ensure compliance with State and County COVID-19 health and safety regulations.

The City encourages all residents to hike, walk, bike or roll on City trails as a safer alternative to playground, skate park and facility use. To minimize the impacts of COVID-19 on Arcata trail and park users, community members are strongly encouraged to follow these recommended guidelines:

  • Always bring a mask or face covering with you when you leave your home to recreate.
  • Always wear a mask or face covering when you are unsure if you can maintain a 6 foot distance from those living outside your household.
  • Do not go for walks or rides with people outside of your household, this defeats the purpose of physical distancing.
  • Do not use sports fields or playing courts at City parks with people outside of your household, this also defeats the purpose of social distancing.
  • Seniors age 65 and over and community members with underlying health conditions are advised to stay home.
  • Stay at home if you have any allergy, cold or flu-like symptoms.
  • Wash your hands before and after you go outdoors to get some exercise, and carry hand sanitizer if you are able to.
  • Walk or ride your bike to City trails to avoid congregating in parking lots.
  • Always maintain a 6 to 8 foot distance from people outside of your household when you leave your home and when you are at all City recreation areas.
  • Bring your own water and keep in mind that public restrooms are closed.
  • Please remember to pick up after your pets and to pack out your trash.

But, you can eat inside small restaurants without masks….or is that Eureka? And, you will be able to go to the gym next week. Also, you can have your child go to childcare with other children/households…..but, don’t you dare be on the same basketball court as another! Some sort of consistency would be nice.

Why can Senior League Baseball team play, but Little League can’t? Why can certain places get a license to have daycare or summer camp, but others can’t while agreeing to protocol?

In several towns our size playgrounds are open with no sign of virus
why not let parents decide what is best for their families
Outdoor playing and socializing are key to improving mental and physical health many families with young children live in apartments with no yards

Because there is a virus, Meemaw. The public health prevails. We wish it were that simple.

Allowing churches but not playgrounds and such is just plain stupid… the chances of infection while sitting together indoors being brainwashed for several hours are much higher than from incidental contact during outdoor recreation. Either announce a new plan of letting everyone die, and open everything less dangerous than churches too, or keep the churches closed like they should be.

Everything’s open if you’re protesting, and whatever you want is free.
