Humboldt continues ‘moving forward at a steady pace’: What you can do in the meantime

Humboldt COunty COVID-19 InformationPress release from the County of Humboldt:

Humboldt County continues to move forward with a gradual and strategic reopening of our local economy.

While new guidance for additional business reopenings was released by the Governor’s Office this week, Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Teresa Frankovich reminds the public that the local reopening process takes time.

“It’s really important for us all to remember that we’re moving forward at a steady pace,” Dr. Frankovich said. “It was never the intent of the state or locally for us to flip a light switch and open everything back to normal in one fell swoop.” She added that every new sector that reopens changes the dynamics of the virus in Humboldt County. “In just a little over two weeks we have opened retail and restaurants. At the same time casinos have reopened, places of worship have the ability to provide services indoors and we have seen larger gatherings related to the recent holiday weekend and community protests. All of this activity may contribute to increasing case numbers, and we need time to be able to see that impact,” she said.

With more businesses beginning to reopen to the public, Humboldt County residents are encouraged to continue protecting our community by helping limit the spread of COVID-19. Here’s what you can do to continue slowing the impact of COVID-19 on our community.

Get tested for COVID-19 for free

Each COVID-19 test for infection serves only as a “snapshot in time.” That’s why it’s important for community members to be tested on an ongoing basis. This is especially recommended for health care workers, first responders, retail and dining employees and others who work closely with people. Testing is available for no cost at the OptumServe Community Testing Site located at Redwood Acres in Eureka.

Dr. Frankovich said regular COVID-19 testing remains an important public health tool we can use to limit the rate of spread of the virus in our community. “Surveillance testing helps us to pick up people who may be asymptomatic but are infected. The earlier we’re able to identify cases and quarantine their contacts, the better chance we have of controlling the spread of the virus,” the doctor said.

Wear a facial covering when interacting with others

The Health Officer’s Order on Facial Coverings remains in effect for Humboldt County. Members of the community are asked to continue wearing facial coverings to limit the spread of virus:

  • Before entering any indoor facility besides your home (Examples: grocery store, post office, restaurant carry out, etc.)
  • Before entering any enclosed open space (Examples: a bus or other shared public vehicle)
  • While outdoors when you are unable to maintain a six-foot distance from another person at all times. (Examples: Farmers’ markets, pumping gas, drive thru/delivery/carry out/curbside pickup, etc.)
  • When personal vehicle windows are lowered to interact with first responders, food service workers or others who are not members of your household.
  • Children older than 2 and under 12 years of age are not required to wear facial coverings but are encouraged to do so if possible.

People who should not wear a facial covering also include:

  • Facial coverings should not be used on children under the age of 2 years old because they are at higher risk of suffocation.
  • People who have trouble breathing
  • Anyone who is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the facial covering without help from someone else.

This is good news, but I don’t understand why I cant open my Arcata business. I walked through HSU and its business as usual? There’re were HSU folks around campus without masks and closer than 6 feet?? I have to jump through hoops and give blood and sweat just for a chance to reopen in phase 4. At phase 2 HSU is free to do whatever it feels. This is a good example of how the state says do as I say not as I do. What a huge amount of liability they must take on letting non essential worker run around during a county shelter in place. what a joke!

Just open up brother. I guarantee they won’t do anything, and we will come support you. HSU is part of the problem, not the solution, to this madness going on in the county and country.

I work for the state. I get to work with the other major state entities. I travel around the county working in state facilities. I havent worn a mask since this thing started. I shake hands with people. Its almost as if this virus dosent exist. The vast consensus is that this whole situation is ridiculous. I traveled to Sacramento for training. No masks worn. I’m sorry you are being held back from making a living by a left wing agenda.

I don’t know why you folks think this COVID is a “left wing” creation. We are all suffering the same effects. This is a worldwide problem. It is a health related crisis not a political stunt. The fact that Trump thinks its all about him just shows how self important he is. The “experts” admit that they don’t yet know how this virus behaves. There’s a kind of chicken or the egg aspect to masks and distancing. Is the slow spread in places like Humboldt due to these measures or is it an over reaction. There is new information that masking and distancing do make a significant difference in places where community spread is happening. I do agree that if we don’t see a spike in the next couple of weeks after large numbers are disregarding precautions then a major reevaluation may be in order.

This wasn’t created by the left wing, but is definitely being used
by them as a power grab. The longer you are unemployed, the more control they have over you via government handouts. If you are dependent on handouts, you will consistently vote for the people that are providing you with income. This consolidating more power for the democratic party and further entrenching their cronyism and corruption. That is not solely on the democrats. The same tactics could be used by any political party. I very much agree with your points in the second portion of your post in reference to the masking and social distancing policies and their efficacy. The next month will be telling for sure.

The problem is that we let it be a problem. We are forced to not work! What part of that don’t you get! 100s of millions could be left to prosper and live free . 10s of millions right now are struggling to live with NO future of it getting better. Healthy free people who are paying the price for sick, old and yes the dead. A whole country is falling into economic despair for a power play of politics and greed. THAT is the problem. We are the price for that problem.

Phase 4 includes concert venues, convention centers, and sporting events with live audiences.

What is your business?

HSU and its “better than everyone else” attitude has been a problem as long as I have lived here, which is longer than most of the students have even been alive. It is definitely not where to go to find fairness, balance or anything to base sound decision making. Bob, I hope you can open up soon.

Library teaches education. Freedom and education are the enemy’s of any government entity. Tens of thousands of student won’t be attending school next year.

Where does this lady get her information from? The Television?
Doesn’t she realize everywhere in the state/country/world is opening up or open and are fine.
Hasn’t she read the statistics from the CDC?
