[UPDATE 6:33 p.m.: Video of the Jeep Hitting Pedestrians] Protesters Blocking Traffic in Eureka

Starting not long after 3 p.m., multiple protesters shouting, “What’s his name? George Floyd!” in reference to a black man killed by Minneapolis police on Monday have blocked traffic on 4th and 5th Streets and some side streets in downtown Eureka. Other protesters line the main street.

I Street is closed at 6th.

Southbound 101 is shutdown according to a Eureka Police Officer speaking over the scanner. “There’s tons of people in the roadway. Right in front of Target, there are people in both lanes.”

UPDATE 4:10 p.m.: According to a witness, there are “probably 700 marchers on 5th Street approaching K Street.

A drummer pulses out a beat. [Both videos by Mark McKenna]

UPDATE 4:25 p.m.: Some in the crowd are getting wilder. There’s a large group at H and 6th lighting fire crackers and a car with windows broken out at 5th and G.

However, the Slough bridges appear to be clear on QuickMap.Quick map at 4:25 p.m.

UPDATE 4:30 p.m.: Reports of the crowd heading south on 7th Street at this point and unconfirmed reports of vehicles getting vandalized at 7th and J over the scanner.

UPDATE 4:54 p.m.: A woman told us that two protesters were hit by a red jeep but they appear to be okay.

UPDATE 5 p.m.: There are at least two large groups. Several hundred are marching south on Broadway. And another large group is southbound on fifth or Sixth Street near I Street, according to reports over the scanner.

UPDATE 5:03 p.m.: Some protesters are tagging buildings with slogans like FTP (Fuck the Police) and George Floyd.

UPDATE 5:09 p.m.: Scanner reports indicate that there are protesters with hammers, shovels, sticks, and a baseball bat at 4th and I Streets.

UPDATE 5:18 p.m.: Some businesses are closing as a precaution.

UPDATE 6:17 p.m.: We’ve received permission from a witness to the earlier hit and run to post his video. Joel McClure said he was walking with his daughter on his back with his wife and other daughter in front when he saw a red Jeep push through the crowd. “I saw the man being driven on the hood until he fell off,” he said. “I thought the wheel went over him.” He said that soon after he found out that the man was not badly injured nor was anyone else. [This video is embedded from Facebook and not everyone can see it. Try going here instead if you can’t:

“What was bad is the side roads were fully open,” he told us. “They could have gone around…Some people just don’t care…which is why we march.”

UPDATE 6:33 p.m.: Some protesters are damaging police vehicles:

And here also protesters are attacking police cars.

I was there and I love all the posts you people are saying. Is so true. These people are either bored. Or high. Most of these black protesters are more racist than your average person. It’s stupid funny how they act like an old time white person. Yet they’re was more white people at this protest for the majority of the time.

Isn’t it odd that as soon as something happens to one of these “fuck the cops-death to pigs” people, they get the drivers plate number and who do they right too~~~~

We need to open a few big stadiums as detention centers and then sort out just who’s who’s. That’s how it’s done in Chile LOL

They wanna yell FTP but when they get hit they asking for the police help!
Do y’all even realize how ignorant that is? FTP and don’t call them for help!!
FTP or sit down and chill!
March peacefully and out the way!
That’s a natural consequence for walking in the road screaming FTP I bet the police was laughing at them! I kno I was!!
Stop destroying our community and our local community!

You do realize that there were all different kinds of people there yesterday? How were the vast majority of the people there yesterday “destroying the community”? And saying “get the point across another way” is BS. I’m sure you don’t approve of any way of protest. What do you think about Colin Kaepernick?

This has nothing to do with Bull Conner. This has to do with freaks coming into our area and destroying private and public property, and disrespecting us. Then they leave, and no consequences. How fucked up is that? The Antifa freaks do not allow anyone with a different view point. They beat you down if you voted for whoever you want. To them, we are not allowed to have any thoughts except those they approve. What’s next? Burning books? Like the Nazis and commies? Antifa are Nazis are commies are facists. They all suppress free speech, religion, they hate freedom. We are forming an Anti Antifa group, who are moving to protect our town from these assholes. We will be at the next one, but there shouldn’t be one, and doxx the fuck out of them. And why doesn’t the city of Eureka demand a 10k deposit before the march. They don’t pay, they don’t march. They carry assault rifles, knives, sticks, and other devices, hammers etc. They have radio repeaters on their cars. Break them. Those of us who may have had our property or car fucked up by them need to go and get some money from the county. And demand the county doxx these people right in the paper, pictures, names, addresses. And where are the code enforcement and environmental police? Hiding till their next bust? The Antifa pigs caused environmental damage, and they were protesting without a permit. Bust these people, bust them hard. How about a fine for 10k a day, for protesting without a permit. Antifa wants to hurt us. They want to destroy our way of life. Why aren’t we fighting back? Some of us are going to.

Eh ? Protesting over nothing.

———
“No physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation,” says the official autopsy. “Mr. Floyd had underlying health conditions including coronary heart disease. The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.”

The Floyd family have reportedly ordered their own independent autopsy from Dr. Michael Baden. Attorney Benjamin Crump, who is representing Floyd’s family, said that any talk of a heart condition or asthma was irrelevant because Floyd was walking and breathing before his contact with police.
——-

Oddly…. my uncle was walking, talking and breathing just before his fatal heart attack.

Wow….so kneeing the man on the neck for nearly nine minutes, nearly three of which he was no longer responding, including a pulse….you are trying to say that a man saying I can’t breather wasn’t in crisis?

The cop was fired. Hell be exonerated if there’s a fair jury ( not likely). The counterfeit bill passer likely had a heart attack. He was saying “I cant breathe” before the cops touched him.
But rioting is okay, right?

“Touched” ….you mean touched by four cops one at least with his knees on Mr. Floyd’s neck and chest for 8 minutes no matter he was flat on his stomach and cuffed? And I guess you call rape sex?

The counterfeit bill that George Floyd had makes George Floyd the victim of a crime, not the perpetrator. He didn’t leave the scene, he stayed outside the store. Chances are he didn’t know the bill was counterfeit. Did he have some big counterfeit operation going? If so, that would be exposed in a heartbeat, which it hasn’t. That would bring in the Secret Service. And even if he did, which he didn’t, he stayed, he cooperated, he didn’t resist. If the cops were concerned about counterfeiting, they should have arrested him and called in the Secret Service to find out where he got the bill. Killing him on the spot was murder. But I detect a whiff of, you know, bigotry. I don’t know of anyone who doesn’t have something in their life you can’t put under a microscope and then magnify to say that is who they are in total. For example, if you were killed by the cops, how would you feel if they called you Cowboy, the bigot or Cowboy, the Liar. That’s what you just did to George Floyd. What you said about Floyd was untrue–that he deliberately passed a fake bill and that he died of a heart attack. Floyd was a security guard and interestingly, worked one of the same venues the cop moonlighted at.

He was also on fentanyl and methamphetamines. So to recap, the autopsy that the family provided did indeed show that he died from strangulation. It also showed he was on two of the heaviest drugs out there that are known to cause anything from health issues to major behavioral issues. I hate to sound crass, but the nation is rioting over a tweeker who paid with counterfeit money.

Police do what it takes to get their job done. Don’t cross them. Ya know the ol song, I fought the law and the law won. I have been on the wrong side of the law a few times. Always bail. Caught me a few times too. 100% of the time if you have ran from them, they tackle you, taze you, pepper spray you, rough ya up a bit, and two of them kneel on you, one on your back, one on your neck, every single time. Is it right? No. Is that how it goes? In my experience, yes. Just don’t get caught or don’t do it.

Well I have and do, but there is almost no vestige of systemic oppression left at all. Still a bit of red lining here and there.

“Do you realize that is simply slow motion violence?”

No, it isn’t. Violence has a definition.

“If George Floyd had not DIED you would not know about this tactic, kneeling on a person’s neck used by police the world over, taught by the Israelis to cops everywhere”

I thought most people know about it. All you have to do is watch a bit of COPS. It has been used for decades, maybe millennia (not that it is acceptable) and no it was not promulgated by Israelis (that is stupid and i suspect a claim motivated by racism).

But you did strongly imply that when you made the analogy with innocent bystanders in Germany that might not have been “actually innocent.” I suppose you’ll tell yourself that the people whose car windows were broken were probably closet racists. Now that you’ve raised the issue of bystanders when wrongdoing happens, how about the demonstrators who do not intervene when someone starts smashing windows. Are those bystanders innocent or not?

The only way we are going to have change in this country is if we continue to fight for it and raise awareness. Systemically oppressed people of any and all ethnicities ultimately absorb the fear and shame and exhaustion of their circumstances and can’t afford to take a uber to a different neighborhood and be angry and in pain there. Poor people generally tend to only have the means of robbing other poor people, wealthier people have means generally to go elsewhere to rob and kill. The Founding Fathers had means to travel here and rape and pillage and did not break the cycle of abuse they had the means to escape or even cause elsewhere; but then there wasn’t social media. World is woke now.

Other than a bit of red lining here and there there really is no systematic oppression left. If they cant afford an uber then they can take a bus (silly response for a silly claim). Im not talking about anger or pain, I’m talking about a culture that supports criminality.

Your argument that they have no choice but to rob and murder one another (at a rate FAR greater than police) due to the pain and anger of systemic racism is not supported by evidence or even reasonable.

Again, why isn’t the message directed to the black community? If they behaved like modern day immigrants from Africa, everything would be different. You cant claim that modern day immigrants do not face discrimination, yet they are FAR more successful than native born black Americans.

Many of the problems with modern black culture in the US are repercussions of historic discrimination (not so much current) but no one can repair your culture for you from the outside.

Keep lumping folks into boxes. Walk a mile in someone elses shoes before you pretend to know their American experience. I’ve witnessed police brutality in Humboldt. All the rioters were just criminals. They didn’t give a damn about George Floyd. The family of George Floyd wanted a peaceful protest to honor their relative. Instead they got criminals robbing, destroying, and beating innocent people in his name. They should have been stopped the first time they committed a crime.

Well then they need to stop compromising morally and voting for neoliberals out of fear that a republican might be elected. That will only ensure that nothing really improves. IF Biden wins, we will simply get the next trump after him.

I care about all those issues you mentioned as well, but I wont harm or harass the innocent because that will not effect change. Instead vote for third party candidates only.

I own a business on the 101 and protestors acted respectfully and orderly while inconveniencing people momentarily disrupting traffic to protest institutional racism. It was powerful to witness and I stand with the protestors. The murder of George Floyd was terrible and it should be avenged. We cannot allow racists to hide behind a badge.

It is good to hear that he reports of vandalism, and threats to those attempting to pass by are false. I dont personally believe that any of those police officers are racist, simply negligent and poorly trained.

Well….your belief is a very privileged belief, one I once held and no longer..beliefs can be easily held without experience. It isn’t just racism, there is police brutality locally against all vulnerable people and income and housing inequities that are atrocious and that is fueling these protests as well.

Actually your opinion is a privileged one. What greater privilege is there than to be the single handed arbiter of who is or is not truly racist or for that matter privileged. I happen to be Sheikh, and born with a disability to immigrant parents. You’ve exposed yourself [edit] by assuming my “privilege”.

I agree that police brutality is a problem, for all races. I have yet to hear a single voice protesting the other issues you are attempting to shoehorn in here, but I do think that they play a subconscious factor in motivating people.

Thank you J!

And for any business that get damaged just know we have sacrificed so much to pay for wars elsewhere and to pay the salaries of police and other agencies to abuse vulnerable people and many have been so vocally proud of those “sacrifices” so if you were collateral damage I am sorry AND many humans have been collateral damage unacknowledged so ultimately any sacrifice today was sadly needed and is for a better tomorrow.

What does collateral damage of war have to do with vandals? These cases of arson, assault, and harassment are not in any way unavoidable collateral damage of protesting injustice. We pay the police to enforce the law and 99% of them are good people, well maybe 97%.

This “collateral damage” you are talking about is counter to your apparent goals. It will cause people to donate more to the police and support them more than ever.

I just wonder what your feelings would be if they broke your windows or burned your car. As for George Floyd, that video is one of the most disturbing things I’ve seen online, and I have seen some shit. I have asthma, and know what it is like to not be able to breath, your first instinct is to panic and try to escape whatever is causing it. I don’t see how George could have avoided panicking and resisting, yet he wasn’t. What was going through that cops mind is beyond understanding. He will be punished, if not, then you can riot, but for now, let the system work, and vote.

,… and stay the hell out of the road.

Autopsy says he was likely having a heart attack. When someone is talking like he was their airway is not obstructed. That said, I don’t condone a knee to a neck.

But ultimately it is ones behavior of theft, fraud, assault that bring them to the attention of the police and cause their arrest.

J,

Sure you own a business? “Momentarily blocked traffic”? Rooted in the streets for hours and hours surrounding cars, breaking windows, and spray paining walls is more like it.

Any sympathy for $1000s your ‘fellow business owners’ are having to pay out after being shut down by COVID for two months?

What to see more vacant businesses and destroyed tax base? Fewer services for the poor? This is how you get that.

THESE WERE THE ACTIONS OF RIOTERS NOT ‘PROTESTERS’.

How is spray painting on buildings and shouting FTP peaceful!! I feel just about the same as the stupid earth whatever’s at Palco. This is immature. My heart breaks for the man that the police killed. That is so so wrong and I’m glad the cop was charged. There are far more good cops than bad. I would be ashamed if I were the man killed and could see how stupid people get ! He was a peaceful man. He was a religious man. We all know we would love to do what that red vehicle did, same as the logging truck at Palco. You walk where your not supposed to you just might get hit stupid people! 😡

This, I think, is a case of multiple confluences from people with widely disparate views seeing an opportunity to advance their agendas because of the social upheaval of the COVID-19 response.

There are the genuine, the ones who want to make a statement that the casual way authorities treat the health and safety of black men they interact with is not tolerable.

There are the right-wing ( and often white-supremacists though not all of them) trolls who are trying to make conflict bigger to justify a stronger and more violent response.

And then there are the left-wing antifa folks who seem to take advantage of any protest to attack the police and increase the sense of strife while trying to engender an actual revolution.

And finally, there are the vast majority of folks who find the perpetual racism evident in the country appalling and disgusting and are trying to figure out how the heck do we fix this in our society and move on to a place where people are free to live without racial fears and anxiety. I don’t have a solution to this last bit because I find racism to be so blindingly stupid that I can’t understand how people with even a very modest intellect can’t see how stupid it is.

Just call it what it is. It’s domestic terrorism. Stay away from my neighborhood. I don’t want trouble, but it will be defended. I don’t condone bad police behavior, but nobody whose property is being destroyed, nobody whose way is being blocked has done anything to deserve this. Any injuries or worse to these perpetrators is brought upon themselves. I say put all of them in jail and if they get COVID in there, that’s also their own fault. Anybody who defends this behavior is a traitor. This is the absolute worst America has to offer. These same people seem to just wait for an opportunity to participate in yet another riot.

I sent a note to a friend of 30 years about the Sonoma County sheriff’s decision ton not enforce health department orders and he gave me some. ..”I’m living the dream”, don’t need to be bothered with all the crisis stuff. To which I replied , that would be the white plantation owners viewpoint.

Too many people are comfortable with NIMBY attitudes and that’s probably the same thing that contributed to the holocaust in ww2.

“F*ck ’em” is what happens to good cops or a potentially good career in law enforcement when citizens generally ignore the horrendous actions of police and don’t insist on systemic changes that secure means of reporting misconduct and assuring it is addressed. Mr. Loyd’s murderer had complaints that just sat somewhere gathering dust.
Many people fear the police for good reason and so do not call them when in need.

The epd and the local highway patrol do a good job, and showed incredible restraint,

they did not do anything wrong,

there is no need to paint their squad car or hassle them.

Honor George Floyd for the horrible thing that happened to him,

we all feel the pain for George Floyd,

but don’t take it out on the local police

or the local stores

they DID NOTHING TO WARRANT THIS.

Try to work with the police not against them,

In a peaceful protest.

How would you know what EPD does so long as you are not in a vulnerable position of being homeless and/or poor and or in the wrong place and time etc.? Many have witnessed local police brutality and been direct victims and have nowhere to turn, their lives severely damaged or destroyed in silence…people of many ethnicities; skin color is just one excuse of abuse of power. Homeless have been set on fire in their sleep…no arrests, pedestrians hit and run and other publicized incidents of crimes unsolved and those are just symptoms, small indications of what goes entirely addressed.

Memy,
I get your point. I value the EPD. They show up. We have a good chief. We went a while without one and it wasn’t good.

They are better than nothing. We are in a type of quarantine, we need the police. I don’t want to get rid of them.

That said, nobody is perfect. This is a poor county, Eureka is not perfect, and that is not the EPD’s fault.

Your comments make me so sad, I can barely take reading them. Do you think eureka is worse than other cities or towns in California?

I am just worried about the protest getting out of hand, the police are keeping the town from being wrecked, I live here and I don’t want my town wrecked, and I don’t want martial law here, we just are trying to open up from covid.

Peace to you.

To maintain the illusion that brutality is a racial issue is to maintain the satus quo. We are in this together and it does not matter the melatonin in your system. That includes the police and sheriff. They will be the greatest allies if you let them be. We are not Minneapolis.

George Floyd died of a drug overdose while resisting arrest. The “protesters” are useful idiots. They are being used by the globalists to cause disruption and crash the system. Antifa is an ally of BLM. BLM invites them, with the plan of committing terrorist violence. They get their money from guys like George Soros. George and his foundation need to be punished because they are paying people to break the law. None of this has anything to do with justice or racism. Police brutality is not racially biased.
