At approximately 3:14 p.m., a dispatcher sent an ambulance and other first responders to the Redcrest area on Hwy 101 where a traffic cone hit by an oncoming vehicle went through the victim’s windshield and injured a woman,  according to reports over both the scanner and on the CHP Traffic Incident Information Page.

The cone was described as having a heavy base.

The woman’s clavicle was likely broken and she was in a great deal of pain.

A tow truck was called for the vehicle.

so safety cones arent safe

the only safe thing you can do is hide in your house, if you have one, and never ever come out again

not a cone, a delineator ( as the perimedic described it to the ER on the radio, I heard her on the scanner), about 4 feet tall, 3-4 inches round with a heavy thick plastic base, i hope she is ok, what a kinda freak accident,

No kidding. What are the odds? A broken clavicle is no fun.

At least 7lbs in the base of the cone alone multiplied by the inertia.

They have them set up so narrow right now. I had one come flying up and barely miss my car a couple days ago. Same thing from an oncoming car. Scary I drive through this area everyday for work.

Ouch. I once had a windshield caved in by a chunk of redwood bark from a log truck traveling the opposite direction, but wasn’t injured.

Went through there yesterday. Sketchy.
All those delineators had double bases for extra stability. So maybe 14 lbs of rubber base? Ouch! I hope she is gonna be ok.

I don’t know who the contractor is on this job but they did the worst job I’ve ever seen in setting up the cones for traffic in opposing directions . The area is a 55 zone so of course people will take it at 60, 65 and above making it even more dangerous. First time through t he work zone for me was late at night when it was dark and i couldn’t believe the half ass manner at which the cones were placed, i was driving slowly and carefully and i still narrowly missed a few

A traffic cone is more likely to get stuck under a wheel than get launched. But it can still smash a windshield. Delineators can be come 10-20 pound missles if hit the right way. Even if the base separates, they are still made of hard plastic, not rubberized, softer materials that cones are generally made from.

I am surprised that the cone, which is generally a rubbery plastic managed to penetrate the ladies windshield and injure her. That is a first for me.
