Rock On! Climbing Arêtes in Trinity County
The Trinity Arêtes, in Trinity County off Underwood Mountain Road, is popular with rock climbers as it presents a challenging climb. It’s about 120 to 140 feet up to the top. (Wondering what Aretes means? An Arête is an outcropping of rock with sharp angles.)
This beautiful area has nearby camping in the forest with plenty of room for people to remain apart from each other.
This weekend, these rock climbers maintaining social distancing and enjoyed a uniquely beautiful part of the Emerald Triangle.

Snort!
Crap. We found Split Rock when we were in high school. We had a patch right next to it.
It was about a 3 mile hike in before they built a road in to it.
It’s Gods country. Pictures can’t do it justice.
It was our supper secret spot
Keep it secret, please.
Called Ghost Rock locally. Here’s a view of the Aretes through the mist.
Beautiful.
I had similar thoughts. Here fishy fishy.
My favorite Trinity Alps hike is to Grizzly Lake Falls. 170 foot waterfall and you see dozens of waterfalls up to 50 feet tall on the way there! Trinity is beautiful!
Grizzly falls was a tough one to get good pictures. .. might be better in spring with more water… this is a summer pict.
Grizzly Lake and companion…
So, you’d rather be lunch, for a hungry shark, than splattered all over the scenery???!!! I think personally I’ll take a pass on BOTH!!!! NTYVM!!!!
Grizzly Lake and companion…
Glad you got out Paul. I hope you got the whole family out with you.
Took Jimmy and Henry. We’ve been going up there numerous times and I’ve let the kids ride their bikes down while I drive out in front. Also did some target shooting at the top. And collected gold fish at the bottom. Had some serious fun.
The gold fish pond is pretty funny. They’ve been there for years… there’s a brown gene going around instead of gold.
Hi folks!
Moderate climbers here trying to get back in shape after the curfew. We’d like to take it easy and gain some confidence by top roping before trying to lead. Is there a way to the top, from which we could set-up a rope?
Thx
Hi Paul – I would like to get your permission to use your photos for a Forest Service press release. My pictures just don’t capture the beauty of the Aretes that yours do. The objective is to share with the public, recreational opportunities the Shasta-Trinity National Forest has to offer.
