[UPDATE] In Spite of Social Media Posts, Stabbing in Cooper Gulch Not Believed to Be Related to a Serial Killer

On Wednesday, May 13 at 8:46 p.m., Eureka Police officers were dispatched to Cooper Gulch Recreation area off of Myrtle Avenue after a woman reported that a male had choked and assaulted her, EPD Chief Steve Watson told us today.

He explained that the officers found the adult female victim in the grassy area south of Skate Park. The woman had been “stabbed multiple times in the back and neck area” and was “transported to the hospital to be treated for her wounds which were not life threatening,” Watson told us.

The woman, who was “intoxicated” and thus unable to clearly articulate all aspects of the situation, told officers that she had been preparing to leave the park, Watson explained, when an unknown male attempted to get her attention.

“She ignored the man and walked away,” Watson said she told his officers. The woman told the officers she was then assaulted by the light-skinned male with a shaved head, possibly Hispanic, in his twenties.

Watson said the the crime is being investigated as an assault with a deadly weapon. “Evidence was collected from the scene,” he told us.

Two social media posts that were frequently paired together and shared widely were taken by many to believe that multiple women were in danger.

Two social media posts that were frequently paired together in the last day and shared widely were taken by many to believe that multiple women were in danger from a killer.

One of the comments expressing alarm that was posted on one of the posts.

Watson added that at this point, despite social media posts alleging a repeat violent criminal in the area, “I don’t have any evidence that a serial killer was involved in the situation.”

If you have more information, please reach out to the Eureka Police Department at (707) 441-4060.

UPDATE: The Arcata Police Department released this information:

Recent social media postings of an interaction that was reported to the Arcata Police Department underscores the value of social media platforms as tools that can be utilized to inform, educate and create awareness of community interactions that may assist with safeguarding the personal safety of all community members.  This interaction occurred near West End Road and St. Louis Road on Thursday, May 14, 2020.  While no crime was reported there were behaviors displayed in conjunction with a name associated with past violent crime in Humboldt County that generated the social media postings.

Social media can be used as a personal safety and crime prevention platform that connects people in an information sharing capacity to not only solve crime but to provide information on current investigations.  As was the case in this most recent interaction, social media can also be used to inform community members and to provide situational awareness that enables people to be more aware of their surroundings.  Greater awareness provides additional capacity for personal safety as well as the safety of others.

The Arcata Police Department encourages all community members to continue to utilize social media as an extension of the community/police partnership; providing information that can be used to keep people safe and to solve crime.  Through the investigative process APD can determine if a crime occurred or the potential for crime to occur.  While no crime was reported to have occurred during this interaction, in an abundance of caution the Arcata Police Department is providing information on this interaction, and the social media postings that followed, as an additional reminder to all community members to be vigilant in planning for their own personal safety and to continue to utilize social media to assist law enforcement with safeguarding the personal safety of all community members.

I went to school with this guy and saw him get a beer bottle broke over his head and with blood pouring down his face he chased the guy that did it. If this was really him in the arcata forest why would he give his real name?

The truck driver, Wayne Ford is still safely in prison. That Jones guy however, is out free and a suspect in multiple disappearances..

That was in the 90’s.
Wayne Adam Ford.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Adam_Ford

Story I was told goes he sat at the Ocean Grove in Trinidad and talked to his friend or brother who talked him into turning himself in. He did but since he was in the good ole boy circles they didnt believe him and sent him home.
He went back with a severed breast he had kept in his freezer.

He was mainly picking up hitchikers especially out 299, a lot of young women hitch hiked out to work on food farms near blue lake. It was pretty normal to safely hitch here then.
My neighbors friend disappeared and I remember all of a sudden all the women were saying dont hitch out the 299 right now at all. The 2 women I knew of who went missing were never found, &unfortunately not looked for for long.
He probably killed a lot more women than were found, the hcso does not like to investigate those from their circles. Same with AE Aemmons when he killed Gypsy. A known meth using logger who felled a tree on someone and was never even drug tested.

There were also a pair of serial killers, a man and woman, who hid out on what is now called murder mountain, which is really how the area got its name.
In case you dont know by now, Netflix documentaries are very poorly done, usually are one sided and in general lie.
The guys who made the MM told each person they interviewed the doc was about something different…oh its all about old timers here, oh its all about good growing, its all about police misconduct etc etc.

Other than those and maybe Robert Durst I dont know where folks are pulling this serial killer talk from. Yes there are rumors of a family of serial killers that run many generations back but as far as Ive heard its never been proven.

This James Jones guy was the last person seen with two women who disappeared a short time apart, one of them was later found as skeletal remains, the other is presumed dead. Most people here suspect they weren’t his only victims.

The 90s were a grim time in Humboldt. A couple of serial killers and some other grisly and tragic murders, including those of children, yet our homicide rate then was much lower than now

Just like Tiger King and a good chunk of documentaries, they start with one goal and then realize they have a better documentary topic as they go. Having worked with Jason POS and lived on Rancho I can say that is a very accurate depiction of Southern Humboldt. Mirrors don’t show you what you want to see, they show the truth.

You got the story semi right. He did show up with a breast in his pocket but was never turned away because they did not believe him. Also there were several disappearances at the time that he did NOT do. I heard Phil Specter lived in the area at the time and it is believed he may have been involved in some serial killings.

The sheriff had two stabbings in Cutten in the past month as well… hardly any details released on those… related?
Any info?

Doubt dude is a serial killer… this mostly is “tweaker drama”…

He was the last person seen with two women who disappeared – Sheila Franks and Danielle Bertolini. One of them’s remains were found, the other is presumed dead. I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Sheila’s femer bone was recovered in the Eel river just down from Danielle Bertolini’s, my granddaughter’s, remains where found last year in June.

tweaker drama sums up all of them historically. it sure seems the most are centered around Mck, Fieldbrook, Glendale and Blue Lake. history always repeats itself and usually in 30 year cycles. and I am not the only one that is seeing signs of this return to this same area. once again it is meth mixed with bad people that is the culprit.

Yeah, that Ernest Christy guy that was keeping women in redwood stumps and the murdering them in the late 80s in fieldbrook. He was all methed up.

it is what put an end to an idea of making a cool fort out of one of these stumps. I mentioned what I had planned and someone told me about this monster. its hard to imagine such a monster and his son has to live with knowing for a life time. there are some other almost equally horrifying stories, less the murdering part, I have heard from victims in the same general area. all around the same time in the mid 80s to early 90s. maybe MHS should teach it in a history class so its not so out-of-sight and mind.

I remember the two brothers that chained that girl to a tree in whitethorn. That was insane but the tree stump is just over the top.

Funny. The APD tells us all to keep helping each other out on social media…because they are completely impotent. They can’t catch a killer, they can’t respond to burglaries because of covid and even if they accidentally bumble into catching any criminal that criminal will be let go immediately or just after our DA and county court system release them. So…we are supposed to not arm ourselves or take any actions on our own other than post on facebook? Yes- that’s what they would like for us to do! Am I the only one witnessing a breakdown of society due to relying on government agencies that cannot do their job?

I think there are a few of them around. Sheriffs never seem to search much or dig around properties for other bodies when weird murders of women, or men for that matter, happen- when they have been held hostage or cut.

My question is for Kim: the statement posted about social media and keeping others safely informed, is this a good thing or are they saying not to use social media? It’s a little confusing because they say the incident at Cooper’s mulch wasn’t Jones but they don’t say much regarding Jones and the Arcata marsh incident. Would you please clarify what they are asking us to or not to do!
By the way, Yes I believe Jones is responsible for Two murders, maybe more, but that has no influence on what did or did not happen in Arcata.

Hi, I’m the victim of the Cooper’s Gulch incident. I told EPD that the person who attacked me was a young male, light beige/tan skin with dark brown 3/4″ hair & dark brown almost oval eyes. He is about 5’7″ tall & about 170 lbs…I told them that I didn’t think he was homeless bc he asked for a cigarette I told him I only had rollies & when I gave it to him he was confused that there was no filter…

If that really was you, very scary, glad you’re Ok. Its very interesting that the description police gave was nothing like what you are saying. And there was another possible luring in the same area by a man introducing himself as Jim Jones, around the Same Time. Are you sure it was Not him? Have the police showed you any pictures of him? Sounds like they havn’t done much at all, but somewhat dismissed the attack due to intoxication? Correct me if Im wrong. I find it really discerning considering this man who was a suspect in 2murders in the area, who matched the description and even introduced himself as Jim Jones. Maybe you should contact EPD again and ask to see sum photos? Or make sure they got the description correct, as I’ve seen different info. Just a thought.
