May is Mental Health Awareness Month

This is a press release from SoHum Health:

1 in 5 people will experience a mental health disorder during their lifetime. The good news is there are practical tools that everyone can use to improve their mental health and increase resiliency. Since mental health conditions are so common, May was designated Mental Health Month 70 years ago by Mental Health America (MHA).

SoHum Health’s Senior Life Solutions program was suspended due the COVID-19 Shelter-in-Place Order but would still like to highlight some tools to support the mental health of our community during Mental Health Month. Mental Health America’s #Tools2Thrive are available to help individuals prioritize their mental health, build resiliency in the face of trauma and obstacles, and support those who are struggling. This May, Senior Life Solutions hopes the community will explore topics that can build their own set of #Tools2Thrive by recognizing and owning one’s feelings; finding the positive after loss; connecting with others; eliminating toxic influences; creating healthy routines; and supporting others.

“It can be easy to get caught up in your emotions as you are feeling them,” said Mary Bancud-Bettis, Program Director of Senior Life Solutions. “Most people don’t think about what emotions they are dealing with, but taking the time to identify what you’re feeling can help you to better cope with challenging situations. It’s okay to give yourself permission to feel.”

MHA’s #Tools2Thrive can be found at www.mentalhealthamerica.net/may, and can help community members understand how to balance work and play, the ups and downs of life, physical health, mental health, and set yourself on the path to recovery.

“For each of us, the tools we use to keep us mentally healthy will be unique. Mental illnesses are real, and recovery is possible,” concluded Mary. “Finding what works for you may not be easy, but can be achieved by gradually making small changes and building on those successes.”

Senior Life Solutions is managed in partnership with SoHum Health by Psychiatric Medical Care (PMC), a leading behavioral healthcare company. PMC is focused on addressing the needs of rural and underserved communities by managing inpatient behavioral health units, intensive outpatient programs, and telehealth services in more than 25 states. Senior Life Solutions provides evaluation and treatment for patients suffering from depression, anxiety, mood disorders, memory problems, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other behavioral health problems. The program is temporarily on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so. For more information, visit https://sohumhealth.org/services/senior-life-solutions/.

It should be “Mental Health Diversion Month”, to celebrate what Semper Virens always does. Foist off dem crazies on St Joe ER, the cops, or just reject them at the door and let them wander off.

We could divert the celebration to December.

Mental health in this county is a joke that no one is laughing at.

We do definitely need a lot of improvement in this area. Pretty much the only thing mental health services is good at is getting criminals a lesser sentence that is served somewhere other than jail or prison. However, once sentenced to mental health services, little to nothing is actually done for treatment.

Oh good. Because between the government and it’s media cohorts I think we’ve all been thrown off balance.
