EPD Says Crime Is Trending Up

Press release from the EPD:

EPD OfficersSix weeks into the Shelter in Place order (SIP) and the Eureka Police Department (EPD) is as busy as ever. Self-initiated and proactive patrols are up 25% compared to pre-SIP, with an average of 93 self-initiated contacts or patrols a day. Many of these patrols include business security checks. Officers have learned which businesses are closed or have adjusted hours and have adapted their patrols accordingly.

Initially EPD did not see an increase in calls for service during the SIP; however, at this six-week mark, the rate of calls for service has increased slightly. In addition to the 93 self-initiated patrols a day, EPD has handled an average of 112 calls for service per day.

Despite the focused upsurge in proactive business security checks by officers, commercial burglaries (specifically the breaking of a window to steal goods while the business is closed) have increased about 30%. EPD’s Criminal Investigations Section and Problem Oriented Policing Team have been investigating these crimes and working diligently to make arrests while assisting businesses with improving their security measures.

Violent crime in general also appears to be trending upward. Most concerning and in line with National trends, is the increase in domestic violence. 21 domestic violence related reports have been taken during the SIP, which is a 50% higher rate than pre-SIP. Eight arrests for domestic violence have been made, a 30% higher rate.

It is important to note that EPD is still here and fully prepared to respond to your call for help. EPD Chief Steve Watson had this to add, “Domestic violence should never happen to anyone but it does all too frequently, often going unreported. Abuse is never okay but you are not alone. The COVID-19 emergency has not changed in the least how we will respond to and handle domestic violence cases. We will arrest offenders and they will be booked into the Humboldt County Jail.

If you need counseling, advice, emergency shelter, help with requesting a restraining order, or someone to accompany you to court, you may contact Humboldt Domestic Violence Services’ (http://hdvs.org/) 24-hour support line # (707-443-6042) or the Self Help Center (825 Fifth Street, Eureka, 707-445-7256). The Humboldt County Victim Witness Program is also another important resource (707-445-7417). For those experiencing a psychiatric emergency, help is available through the Department of Health and Human Services Mental Health 24-hour crisis line (707-445-7715) or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255).”EPD crime

So… does this mean the Sheriff was lying? Or does he just have his head buried in the sand? Or is he simply another incompetent politician playing law enforcement? Time for him to be replaced.

It increased in my neighborhood from the start. It hasn’t ever decreased. The Sheriff just has a lack in response which started with Downey and is worse under Honsal. He seems to like being in the press, but he is even poor at that. I don’t trust him. If I needed help he’s absolutely the last person I would count on.

Just anecdotally here in Arcata our neighborhood has been much quieter. Less creeps/tweeks and ‘grown men on kids bikes’… after they ran the bums out of devils playground it was really bad.

There should be a list of places then that residents themselves think are bad areas and need more of a presence.

I know these are eureka statistics but I have to point out that letting wade Harris out of jail is sure to increase burglary and violent crime such as home invasions. If he stays in eureka, which there is no reason he should, then they can deal with him. Most likely he will came back down here and continue his riegn of terror. He needs to stay in jail without bail.

Cool, crime is going up so the only logical thing to do is release dangerous criminals like wade from prison! Does this whole thing make sense to anybody ???? Why are they releasing these freaks when Humboldt has 2 cases of covid and no deaths ??? What the fuck is going on here???

Welcome to California! The mindset of progression led by liberal democrats. Don’t worry, next they are going to make everyone safe by confiscating firearms in California.

I would be a little surprised if the facemasks weren’t emboldening criminals. Last week I was in my bank when a man walked in with his face covered by a bandana, hood over his head and wearing sunglasses. Most people didn’t look twice at him. Six months ago I would have been ready to hit the deck.
Most video/camera footage could easily be dismissed because of plausible deniability.

It’s called revenue. They don’t give a sh!t about public safety or salvation. Seriously, it’s up to us to protect ourselves, loved ones and upstanding neighbors. This is a fine example that the system has failed. It’s not getting better…..only worse. The real victims are tax paying, job holding, law abiding citizens in this state, there, I said it.

We are being manipulated.

More people are going broke, falling further into debt (because, as we all know, accruing and maintaining debt is “essential”) and being forced to reinvent their entire lifestyle on a moment’s notice. Addicts’ supply chains are dissolving, socialites are starving. People are also realizing the degree of manipulative force being applied by the proverbial powers that be, which is a huge subconscious thorn. Rest assured, all will be well…which is always said when all is not well.

My friend works a crisis line and she said last year this time there were 7 calls a day now they are getting 400 really intense calls a day from suicidal people including children and women trapped with their abusers. I really wonder if this quarantine is going to save lives or end up costing more lives in the end.
End the lock down now. Protect victims of domestic violence.

Does anyone think it’s due to releasing all those people from jail.
It seems to me that they are just out there doing what got them there all over again.

🕯🌳Just think your new job this summer will be the one “not my potus ” took away from the migrants. You’ll be out in them fields picking your own food or at the mall cleaning up someone else’s spilled soda. Seen a homeless guy at Safeway in Fortuna sanitizing the shopping carts outside just Happy to have a job. This what you white privileged people fear. England already going through it ski instructors picking asparagus, nail salon owners tending potato fields and the new world moves on.🌍🌍🌍🖖

People who say white privelage are the same people that called The Donald a fascist for banning travel from China but applaud Newsom for shutting down his entire state. Aka people who are so woke they don’t have to listen to logic, facts of the meaning of words.

Has anyone ever seen the old Coloma, CA jail over near Placerville? It was for criminals in the Sutter’s Mill region? The cells were small, had bars with no windows and cold stone or concrete walls and floors. They had all the fresh air one could want. I believe these were holding cells until the judge either convicted or freed them. Also, back then if convicted, the criminal was generally hanged. Placerville was actually named Hangtown first due to the number of criminals convicted. Punishment was actually followed through on. Stiff punishment needs to come back.

I am progressive minded in general, but I agree with you. I think that kids getting away with small things at a young age leads to thievery becoming a lifestyle. And when there is no punishment they keep doing it until the become like wade Harris. [edit]
