Week of the Young Child Activities Adjusted for Staying at Home

public informationThis is a press release from the City of Eureka:

RE: THE CITY OF EUREKA HONORS THE WEEK OF THE YOUNG CHILD

The City of Eureka will be honoring Week of the Young Child, April 11 through 17, as a way to recognize the role that children, families and those who care for them play in our community. The City, in partnership with Changing Tides Family Resources, Eureka City Schools, First Five Humboldt, Humboldt County Office of Education, Redwood Chapter of the California Association of the Education of Young Children, the Redwood Discovery Museum and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the North Coast, are encouraging all of our community to participate in shelter-in-place activities to celebrate throughout the week.

This annual national event focuses on a different theme each day of the week: Music Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Workforce Wednesday, Artsy Thursday and Family Friday. The shelter in place “event” offers several ways for families, and others who want so provide messages of support to our community.

The week will kick off on Saturday with a week-long window decorating campaign. We invite community members to decorate your windows to show your support for children and families in your neighborhood. Participants are encouraged to add a new element each day of the week that fits the theme. The week will begin by placing a teddy bear in the window – a symbol used across the country to let kids know that they’re not alone during this health crisis.

Additional activities for kids, such as scavenger hunts, as well as challenges to community members who want to show they’re a champion for children, can be found in English and Spanish at the Facebook Site “Eureka Honors Week of the Young Child,” or on the Mayor’s page on the City of Eureka
Website, https://www.ci.eureka.ca.gov/council/meet_the_mayor_council/mayor.asp.

The week is also an opportunity to recognize the work of “Friends of the Young Child,” the child care providers, teachers, mentors, coaches, after-school providers and others who make sure the children in our community have a safe and enriching childhood.

“In this critical time, child care providers are essential employees who continue to work so our doctors, nurses, grocery store clerks, public safety officials and others can do their jobs to keep us safe,” said Mayor Susan Seaman. As we think about the important work all of our essential employees are doing, let’s not forget that many can do their jobs better when they know their kids are safe in the hands of qualified childcare providers.”

This celebration of Week of the Young Child follows the City’s 2019 adoption of the “Eureka Family and Children’s Initiative Strategic Plan.” That plan focused on seven focus areas: Parental and family support, engaging diverse families, neighborhood safety, access to child care, supporting the child care industry, healthy children and enrichment activities. The plan can also be found on the Mayor’s page on the City of Eureka’s website:https://www.ci.eureka.ca.gov/council/meet_the_mayor_council/mayor.asp.

Funny I seen this. Today I got home to find missing toothpaste , laundry detergent, lotion and I’m missing my shaving cream. Also a giant pile of dishes and sticky stuff everywhere. Kids all excited, “ we made slime!”. Great……. what’s next in this time of crisis, sock puppets out of toilet paper?

Since it is Kids week Let’s help them adjust to this new normal .Children 8 and above can help in the process of making a mask for their own use. Most have the dexterity to do a simple stitch. 3 and above can be involved in picking the material ,maybe a favorite flannel or favorite pillow case would be comforting. Younger children would benefit from making a mask for their favorite stuff or action figure. Preteens and teens will have more buy in on wearing their mask if they have control over design elements . For preteens making a mask together on zoom can be a social event that will allow them to chat about what is going on in their community. Older teens can feel empowered when they make masks for friends and loved one. P.S. I have a Masters, specialist credential and 20 years of experience . But you don’t need to know that to understand why we must reach out to our children . We are the “Village” and it takes all of us to raise them .
