Mayor Seaman’s Weekly Address

Press release from the City of Eureka yesterday:

Hello. I’m Mayor Susan Seaman. As I’ve mentioned in my previous communications, the City of Eureka is working diligently to support the health and well-being of our citizens, our community, and our economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, I would like to share with you some updates related to COVID-19.

This week, Eureka City Council passed the eviction moratorium ordinance, which went into effect immediately, and will remain in effect through May 31.

Right now, and for the duration of the moratorium, landlords cannot evict tenants for nonpayment of rent, or for a no-fault eviction.

In order to qualify for delayed payments, tenants must notify their landlord, in writing, of lost income and their inability to pay the full rent. They must also provide documentation to support their claim. More details on the moratorium can be found on our website: ci.eureka.ca.gov.

In talking with many of you, I have received several questions and heard deep concern related to how the City is supporting the members of our community that are actively experiencing homelessness.

As you know, the Eureka Police Department’s Community Safety Engagement Team (CSET) and our Community Service Department and UPLIFT Eureka staff are working with community partners on the frontlines of the COVID-19 homelessness response. I’ll be sharing more soon about how, collectively, we are working to meet the needs of our most vulnerable population. Much of this programing could not be done without grants and Measure Z funding from Humboldt County.

I have deep respect, gratitude, and admiration for the important work they are doing.

I would also like to take this moment to say a big thank you to all of those “essential workers” who are continuing to serve our community during these challenging times. From me to you, and on behalf of our entire community…thank you.

Finally, to help control the community spread of COVID-19, please keep doing your part. Remain sheltered in place, and if you absolutely must leave your home, practice social distancing. Wash your hands, cough or sneeze into your elbow, avoid touching your face, and sanitize your cell phone and other items you touch or share frequently.

As always, and in addition to our video updates and social media posts, you can find regular updates at the City of Eureka’s website at ci.eureka.ca.gov, as well as links to other important community resources. We also provide transcripts for each of these videos that can be translated into multiple languages. You can look forward to my regular COVID-19 updates on specific topics throughout the week, and expect to hear from me weekly on Fridays.

Again, I’m Mayor Susan Seaman, and I appreciate your attention to this message. Be safe, stay healthy, be patient with yourself and kind to your neighbors and family. We’ll talk again soon.

Mayor Seaman????? This is a clear violation of the gender bias narrative and compels an immediate response. I demand this individual change her last name to Seaperson, and the sooner the better. The humanity.

I agree. It should be redefined as a fem-masculine non-binary trans-friendly name such as Shemen, would fit a lot better in a professional position such as a mayor.

I am so appreciative of Seaman’s and Eureka’s efforts to offer transcripts and translations, and widely disseminate and publicly archive even semi-formal communications.

So much of the local government information right now is video only, and/or on select platforms. I understand that is quick, and personable for those who can watch and listen, but it is as good as a blank wall to many others in the community.

It’s wonderful how the government says a landlord has to accept delayed payments but you had better still pay April’s installment of property taxes. As long as they get theirs thats all that matters.

It’s lovely how [edit: Seaman] tells me to stay in place and allows free-range germ junkies to gather in front of grocery stores while hacking their germs all over passerby. If I die of that thing I’m coming back to haunt every goddamn junky and hobo in this fucking county.
